Every September, an elementary school's chimney becomes the layover point for 20,000 Vaux's Swifts as they migrate south. Around nightfall the birds mass and begin doing aerial acrobatics as they gradually enter the chimney for the night. And between 200 and 600 people show up to watch every night. It's damn neat.
The usual viewpoint is the hill-side of the elementary school, on NW Pettygrove around 27th. Here's a map:

Last night there were lots of kids sliding down the grassy hill on pieces of cardboard. I totally think we should do a 'sledding day' that same way. Maybe later in the fall or winter, when it still hasn't snowed yet.

Re: Have you seen the swifts?
Wed, October 10, 2007 - 5:47 PMI always like the several hawks that hover about nonchalantly when the swifts start their descent into the smokestack.
Like no one knows what they might be up too
