This week there was a teenager on the #75 bus in tiger pajamas. Orange like a stuffed animal tiger, furry, full-body pajamas, plus black tennis shoes and a sparkly blue dolphin toy necklace. He sat in the back seat next to a girl, scowling with his arms crossed. He looked very bored.
This topic is a place to share your glimpses of Weird Portland. That 80-year-old goth couple. The guy with his face painted like a skull you passed on the Burnside Bridge. The teenagers with "Free Hugs" signs outside Powell's Books. The next stall over in the Hawthorne Fred Meyer's that you could hear race car noises coming from. Share.

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Fri, September 28, 2007 - 9:55 PMThere used to be a homeless guy in NW who liked to wear lots of skirts. He'd have 4 or 5 on at a time, and most of the time I saw him, he was lifting his skirts to pee on something in the middle of the after noon.
I wonder what happened to that guy... -
-
Re: Weird Portland sightings
Wed, December 12, 2007 - 6:50 PMI remember that homeless guy with all the skirts. He reminds me of one of the guys on the Newhart show. And yes, I saw him lifting his skirts to pee, too. Gawd. Come to think of it, I haven't seen him in a long time, either....

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Fri, September 28, 2007 - 10:10 PMAbout a year ago, a boyfriend was visiting me from across the country. He lives in a small town in Alabama. I wanted to show him a bit of Portland, give him a feel for the city. This was in the middle of the summer. We were eating lunch in a restaurant on Hawthorne around 36th or so, and a guy in a full-body polar bear suit, complete with giant head, came wandering lazily down the street past the restaurant window. I thought it was the perfect cap-off for the tour. :)

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Tue, October 2, 2007 - 12:44 PMOn Homeless Men, Or, My New Friend "Porkchop".
I was coming out of the local ghetto mart and almost smacked into a loaded shopping cart. There was a 50 something year old man with a green mohawk standing on the other side of the cart in an alcoholic haze. Bleary eyes fixating on me he weaves my way reaching a hand into his pocket where he fishes around a bit before triumphantly brandishing what seemed to be two pieces of once white Wonder bread with a grey gristly piece of something between em. With the throaty growl that comes from drinkin and smokin since the age of 7 he asks, "You wanna buy a porkchop sammich?"
Shit no, man. Put some Saranwrap on that thing. Effin Porkchop sammich indeed. Gave him some beer money and ambled off chuckling to myself. Met a local hooker down the road, a real amazon. She always hits me up for "Fifty-cents", but compliments me first. "Daaaaammmn girl, you sure be wearin' them boots. Where'd you get them? Look fiiiiine. Hey, you got fiddy cent"? Nope, just spent it on a porkchop sandwhich... -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Tue, October 2, 2007 - 5:53 PMA couple of months ago I saw a skinny guy dressed in a full lycra spiderman costume (the oldschool spidey) with the mask and everything. He was running down Powell near the Safeway. At first I thought he was jogging and had a weird sense for athletic fashion, but then he started ducking behind bushes and acting all sneaky. He would run a little way, then dart behind a bush for a couple of seconds, peak out and then dash to a tree. -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Thu, October 4, 2007 - 1:00 PMThere is a guy who I see in Northwest who is completely tatooed all over his body ,including his face, in a checkered pattern.
I always wonder how long it took him to find someone who would do that.
Nice enough guy , seems to be completely oblivious to the looks and surprized stares he gets.

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Thu, October 4, 2007 - 9:49 PMOn two different smoke breaks, today, 5th and Washington, DT. A woman in a leotard doing yoga on the wet sidewalk. A middle aged couple with a boombox on top of the trashcan singin and dancin fit to bust. Damn, I love this town.

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Fri, October 5, 2007 - 10:41 PMwalking down Hawthorne yesterday I passed a big, burly, industrial-rock looking guy on a cellphone. Seriously tattooed, septum piercing, black band t-shirt, shaved head...and overheard him saying: "tonight at the bar we've got a Michael Jackson tribute band playing. I mean, who doesn't love a motherfuckin' MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE BAND!!??"
..not that weird but definately in the happily absurd category

what would jesus do
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 2:37 AMthis was a few years ago, but was with a couple of friends late at night near halloween. Picking cherries off a neighbors tree (with permission of course). Suddenly, a man comes walking down the block, white linen robes, tattered sandals, long hair, dragging a cross. Jesus. He walked all the way down the block and disappeared. Crazy. I think I went to church the next day. -

Mon, October 8, 2007 - 10:10 PM"I think I went to church the next day."
*laughing*
That's great. :) -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Wed, October 24, 2007 - 12:28 PMWalking down this weekend, I stumbled on two big piles of snow on, like, SW Park a block of Burnside.
It was absolutely inexplicable until someone walked by know told me there'd been a big snowboarding demonstration there, and snowboarders had come down a ramp out of a second story window.
The snow was still there when I walked by a couple days later. -

Wed, October 24, 2007 - 12:29 PMThat should've started with "walking downtown this weekend." -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Mon, October 29, 2007 - 9:46 AMAnybody else have great affection for the scary looking but sweet as pie bartender at the Mt Tabor "Legacy" on Hawthorne?
I saw him at a Bogg and Salty show at the library once a couple years ago.
He's got to be one of my favorite rum slingers in this town. Salty and tough when he needs to be and a gentleman with the ladies.
He makes a mean Shirley Temple, with extra cherries and limes.
I was glad to see he was still working there even though they covered up Extremo's murals and moved the bar in the most recent re-incarnation.
The new "sailor jerrry" murals in the side show theatre are pretty sweet, but I miss the hallway ones. -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Mon, October 29, 2007 - 10:01 AMSaw a white older guy driving a nice SUV the other day. No big deal, you see that all the time hereabouts.
However, he had on the loudest old school spiritual gospel on his car stereo, you could hear it for probably miles and miles. And he was singing to it on the top of his lungs. Screaming it, really.
As far as he was concerned, no one else existed. Just him and his joyful noise unto the lord.
It was both amusing and pretty cool. -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 8:45 PMOn more than one occasion I've seen homeless men working a crossword puzzle.
I should also say that I have a soft spot for Elvis. You know of whom i speak, the guy in the full on suit and full of passion. He often plays in the proximity of Powell's Bookstore (and other venues he deems appropriate). -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 8:19 PMLast Sunday, 3:30pm, I saw a young man walking east by the Goose Hollow Inn wearing nothing but a thong and a viking hat (it was about 60 degrees out). -
-
Re: Weird Portland sightings
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 9:35 PMNice, gotta love vikings!
Also, back in may or june of this year I was driving down Alberta and almost crashed after seeing a man on a tall bicycle. Not only was it one of those retro 19th century looking machines (big front wheel, small rear wheel), but he was pulling a trailer with two very naked looking people making out. The warm weather must bring out the amorous nature of the city! More exhibitionist than wierd...but I certainly wouldn't see that back in my hometown in Iowa. =P

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 2:05 AM12/08/07
kinda sad, but true, and he was a friendly talkative sort.
I was walking down a street in the Pearl with the other Santas and met a man who joined us and eagerly told me his life story while clutching a freshly opened and sloshing PBR in each hand.
In between slurps he told me that he grew up here and returned recently. He has been thrown out of everywhere except Powells- they love him because he is a bookologist.
And ever since he got back from Nepal he only drinks things that are blue. He can't drink red,
"And there sure are a lot of you red people out tonight"
I said it sounded like he had a bad case of synesthesia. He said that was right, how did I know? I must be his special Santa.
I gave him a blue candy cane and he was very happy. He said Christmas would be all right now since they made blue candy canes.
Wished him well and we parted at the corner. -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Tue, December 11, 2007 - 7:38 AMA synesthetic bookologist back from Nepal with a case of the blues. There's a song lyric in there.
GREAT story, Lorien. Thank you, so much, for sharing that one. THIS is why I love Portland. You didn't disrespect him. You gave him a blue candy cane and made his holidays happy. Bless you!
Love and light, dear ones.

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 12:43 AMi was walking on division, between 34th and 35th in SE, and passed a house with an ordinary looking landscaped brick wall. very normal, except every crevice of the scalloped bricking had a little McDonald's looking toy sitting on it. There was miniature Furbie, a few pokemon, a random egg sandwich looking thing, maybe over 30 toys, all perched on little ledges in front of this house. very fun to look at. -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Sat, December 15, 2007 - 7:54 PMI was riding the 10 to downtown and saw a person with the wackiest bike helmet and coat ever. The helmet had the head of a toy siberian tiger on the top of it and the rest was covered with matching faux fur. The coat was shaggy brown with huge bunny ears (think donnie darko) that stood up when they pulled on the hood. The person seemed to discover while on the bus that the hood would not fit over their bike helmet. oh portland. -

Sat, December 15, 2007 - 9:21 PMFirst day back in Portland I saw a young 20ish punk girl with blue hair and tattoos making out with a middle aged guy wearing a Mr. Rogers sweater and a pair of dockers outside a toy store. weird. -

Re: Weird Portland sightings
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 5:30 PMdowntown, on burnside just north of the fez:
a girl stands on the corner talking on a cell phone. down the block, a man is walking with a large boom box blaring generic loud music. as he reaches the girl on the cell phone, he turns the bom box vertically and shoves it, speakers first, nearly into the face of the girl on the cellphone. lasting less than a second or two, the incident's punchline is the nonchalance with which boom box man didn't even break his stride from holding the boom box on his shoulder to throwing the sound at "girl on phone" to continuing across the street. -
-
Re: Weird Portland sightings
Mon, January 28, 2008 - 1:01 PMGirl on cellphone: "Hang on a sec, some jerk is walking towards me with a big ass boom box."
THUMP-THUMP-THUMPITY
Girl on cellphone: "He shoved it right in my face. What kind of neanderthal listens to Fatboy Slim without a subwoofer, anyway? So, I was telling you about the Turing Principal of Flat-Space Dynamics, right?"
Ah, all the world is as it should be.
Thanks for the story, Jaine.
