The City of Portland is updating its master plan... That means now is the time to tell the Planning bureau to do their part to KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD! I met with Steve Iwata, who is heading the Keep Portland Weird campaign in Portland's Planning bureau. The next public planning meeting is July 22nd, 2008 at the Portland Building, 1120 SW Fifth Ave., Portland, OR 97204, 2nd Flr in Rooms B and C.
The chi of Portland: High weirdness in Nirvana
By JOSEPH B. FRAZIER – May 5, 2008

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Acupuncture is not just for people. It's also for cities — if the city is Portland.

Adam Kuby has stuck a 23-foot needle into the ground down by the Willamette River and hopes to plant more, choosing locations where he figures the city's "chi," or vital energy, needs some help.

Unusual? You bet. Unusual for Portland? Not really.

For several years, Portland has been reaping praise from lifestyle magazines, from Men's Journal to specialty publications, as one of the nation's more livable cities, listed among the best places to have a baby, grow old, go for a walk, ride a bike, take a jog, breathe clean air, own a dog, take public transportation, start a business (green or otherwise), go out for dinner or not get mugged.

The praises don't stop. Swing a cat and hit 10. On second thought, don't. Portland is rated the third-most humane city in the nation.

But the magazines skim over Portland's quirkier qualities. They aren't bandied about, but they're not hidden either. To some, they make Portland even more endearing.

There's what's left of the 24-Hour Church of Elvis (online only these days), the Voodoo Doughnut Shop, nude bike festivals, the 5K Bare Buns Run in Forest Park and what was billed as the world's longest drag queen chorus line.

Public nudity is illegal in Portland, but in a state where live sex acts are protected as free speech, police involvement generally is limited to keeping order.

For kitsch lovers there's the Velveteria, a black velvet painting museum. Lots of taste, all of it bad in some eyes, unless you love it, and the owners do. Nothing is for sale. Open weekends.

A black light room enhances your favorite Mack Truck Jesus, wahine, Elvis or bandito.

"You will never be the same after a visit to the Velveteria," the Web site promises. And it has "arrived." A monthlong show at Powell's Books, billed as the world's largest bookstore, begins May 1.

"Zoo Bombers" are young adults who race on kiddie bicycles down steep and windy roads starting near the Oregon Zoo. Speeds up to 50 mph are achieved. Details and photos of fractures and ghastly scrapes and bruises are posted on the Internet as badges of honor.

"I used to bomb until a friend of mine biffed it pretty hard. He was in a coma for two months," says Chris Banks, who works the counter at a pizza joint where the Zoo Bombers sometimes gather before starting their wild Sunday night rides.

There weren't any Bombers at the pizza joint on a recent Sunday night.

"They don't always start from here. They're probably up there getting loaded first. These guys are hard-core," said the well-tattooed Banks.

Among the latest additions to the panoply of Portland's oddities are Adam Kuby's giant needles. An artist who arrived from New York four years ago, Kuby says the acupuncture project is an attempt to get people to see the city in a holistic way.

"It is a visual way of expressing what a lot of people already know," said Kuby. The city is "one organism, one body, one very complex, independent system."

Not to mention eccentric.

Ubiquitous bumper stickers proclaim "Keep Portland Weird." They were meant to support small local businesses to keep Portland from being big-boxed out of its identity.

But they've become a focal point for what might be a counterculture elsewhere.

Portland has been called The People's Republic of Portland (land-use rules irk some developers) Beervana, (it's loaded with microbreweries), the Rose City (they are nearly worshipped here) and Sin City, a salute, of sorts, to its frontier past and recent bouts of permissiveness that some people find a bit much. Others just shrug. That's Portland.

The first President Bush called it "Little Beirut" for the hostile receptions he could rely on, and his son hasn't fared any better.

Portland's quirkiness is homegrown as are many other things, some of them under Gro-Lites.

It never got set in its ways. Many of its residents came from somewhere else. You can pick a Brooklynite or a New Englandah out of a chorus, but there is no Portland accent and people here have no pounded-in traditions of doing things a certain way.

So they don't.

At first it was "Stumptown," a just-logged patch of rough riverside cabins in the mud. A wintertime coin toss in 1845 decided it would be Portland, not Boston.

Given the season, it probably was raining. Given Portland's reputation, many probably assume it still is.

It was always a little different.

Tavern-keeper and recent Mayor Bud Clark was photographed a few years back with a raincoat wide open in front of a statue. "Expose Yourself to Art," the poster read, a classic then and now.

Teetotaling lumberman Simon Benson, hoping his workers would show up reasonably sober, gave the city the ubiquitous "Benson Bubbler" brass drinking fountains a century or so back, promoting pure water. Portland's beer consumption plunged. Undaunted, Portland brewer Henry Weinhard offered to pipe fresh beer, 24/7, through a downtown fountain. He got a polite "no thanks."

There's more.

Portland's Skid Road was revered by loggers, sailors and miners flush with pay looking to "blow her in" on a spree. Those who overdid it might wake on a sailing ship, "Shanghaied" as an unwilling crewman. In this, Portland put even wicked San Francisco in the shade. There's a tour available of tunnels said to have been used for the purpose.

And it's Skid Road, not Skid Row, named for the downhill road that horse teams used to drag logs to the mills. Portland claims to have coined the term.

It included Erickson's Saloon, which claimed the world's longest bar. The late historian Stewart Holbrook writes that it measured exactly 684 feet, "a kind of symbol of local greatness and potency" worth fighting over.

The building still stands, duly marked, in the old district, which is reluctantly becoming gentrified, sort of.

The recent glitter and hype is no accident.

Joe D'Alessandro, who headed the Portland Oregon Visitors Association for 10 years until 2006, said Portland lacked a large promotional budget so it focused on impact.

"We were determined to find the niches that were really unique about Portland and tell them to the world," he said.

"We didn't try to make Portland something for everybody. We centered on what Portland's authentic strengths are, what Portland is really good at."

Now, about that rain:

It falls just once a year, from October to about May.

Mobile, Ala., gets three times, on average, more rain a year than Portland. But Portland has three times as many rainy days.

Wettest? Hardly. Rainiest? It's up there.

Bring an umbrella.

Just wanted to invite you to Last Thursday on Alberta.
Rose City Vaudeville is now hosting a busker's block on 19th and Alberta. We have closed off our block to traffic and we'll be pulling out our double decker bus and hosting performance artists for the next three Last Thursdays.
How it works:
We will start at 6:00 and have a sign-up chalkboard so sign in and we'll announce you, take the stage and you have up to 20 minutes of performance time then you can pass the hat if you would like. Then the next performer takes the stage and so on.
The Accadian Ballroom will be joining in the fun serving food and drink on the street as well. Next month they are wanting to have a beer garden as we entertain the masses.
Rose City Vaudeville will also be scouting for new talent for upcoming shows. (FYI-our unifying theme is turn-of-the-century costuming and ol' time music with a modern flair. You know, bustles and top hats.)
We are building a portable aerial rig but it will not be ready for Thursday but we should have it done next month.

So please come on over this coming Thursday, 19th Ave and Alberta. Introduce yourself, sign up and come play! Please let your other performing friends know to join us at the busker's block!
SYNOPSIS
A sleep-deprived theatre director undergoes hypnotic regression to stop a reoccurring nightmare and unexpectedly participates in an ancient dreamtime ritual that sends him through the labyrinths of madness and transcendence in Antero Alli's surrealistic journey, "The Invisible Forest". Inspired by the radical ideas of French playwright Antonin Artaud, the filmmaker also borrows from Rimbaud's poetics of delirium for the "deliberate disorientation of the senses" to achieve a series of altered states. In Alli's own words, "Cinema is a drug. If some movies put us to sleep like tranquilizers and others jack us up like triple espressos, The Invisible Forest is a 100% organic, user-friendly hallucinogen".

It's six, insane, one act plays that delve into life, love and the lengths that people will go to for a little peace of mind... and maybe a prescription. There are more than a few surprises that will be sure to entertain. This play is rated PG-13 because of some language.

The website (www.sandyactorstheatre.org) contains information about ticket prices, showtimes and directions to the theatre.

Now, here's the good news. If you call ahead and make reservations for our preview performances (tonight, 2/26 @ 7:30PM and tomorrow night, 2/27 @ 7:30PM) you get in absolutely free! All we ask is that you come, have a great time and then tell all your friends about this fantastic play! We are also hosting a fund raising night on Thursday, 2/28 @ 7:30PM to raise money for R.A.K. (Random Acts of Kindness). Please make reservations for that night and help us contribute as much love as we can to our local community.

Yours truly, The Right Rev Rap Masta Cornflake, will be playing (among other things) a burned out British rock star named Des Rage. I would enjoy meeting any of you who care to introduce yourselves at the cast "meet & greet" afterwards. Let me know you saw this on Tribe!

Community theatre is an important part of local arts and we want you all to experience it. Sandy Actors Theatre has been here for more than thirty years and the quality of our productions is worth experiencing for yourself. Check us out!

I am sure there are some of you that are going to say that the shit is starting to happen in Portland.

I immediately though of several things we could do with it around town, but I didn't immediately think of the "killer app" of giant inflatable penis hijinks in Portland. So I thought I'd open it up to the group.

If you had a giant inflatable penis (with no accompanying inflatable orifice), and all of Portland to defile with it, what would you do?

They're a grocery store checker, an archaeologist, and a biker guy. Or they're a poet, a drag queen, and a bookstore clerk."

I realized this week that that applies to lots of local businesses too. Let's take Geektopia, the corner of NW 5th and Davis, where you've got Backspace (gaming/web café, art gallery, performance space), Ground Kontrol (arcade, bar, concert venue), Floating World Comics (comic store, small press bookstore, art gallery), plus Upper Playground and Be Compound.

Or the eye clinic in the Everett Street Lofts that's also an art gallery. It seems like everything here doubles as an art gallery and often as a bar too, if not other things.

So. Lets come up with more strange stuff to do in this town. What weird thing have you always wanted to do? What stuff have you seen in other cities that you think Portland should have? Let's have this thread be a place for ideas.

One of my friends is resurrecting Barjacking! Below is an explanation. Here's the Tribe to subscribe to for updates on when the events will take place:
http://barjacking.tribe.net
--------------------------
First we gather as many people as possible at a meet up spot, at 10:31PM.

We gather to vote on a few bars. Once the voting is done, we leave promptly at 11:00 PM to go to the selected location.

Once we all arrive at the selected bar, we meet outside together. Once we have a mob gathered, we bomb the bar with drink orders all at once to distract them, while the few of us roll in speakers, and turntables, and set them up in our scoped out location.

The bartenders and staff are usually too busy being overwhelmed by so many people, that they don't even notice us hooking up tables, and sound. By the time they do notice it's too late, and we have successfully jacked their bar.

We believe that once the bartenders, owners and other staff realize that we are bringing them the green, they won't bother us, and they will let us do our thing.

Howdy Folks,

Welcome Home to the Oregon gathering in the Ochoco National Forest from September 11, 2007 until September 23, 2007. Seed camp begins September 6, 2007.
For more information, contact:
groups.yahoo.com/group/mountainspirit
or call 240-863-6250 or email mountainspirit@yahoogroups.com.

Where the Ochoco Gathering in Oregon will Be.
The 2007 Rainbow Gathering is in Ochoco National Forest at a place called Indian Prarie in central Oregon. (between Prineville and Mitchell)
From Prineville:
Take hwy 26 east towards Mitchell. Make a right turn onto hwy 23,(this road is not marked, but is the next two lane paved road after the reservoir, a few miles out of town, to the right) which later turns into hwy 22 and continues to Walton Lake. Soon after the lake, turn left onto FS 150, a dirt road. Go a little ways till 150 ends in a T. Go right onto FS 2630, and continue to the parking lot and Bus Village.
From Mitchell:
Take hwy 26 west towards Prineville. A little ways past the Bandit Springs rest area, go left onto FS 2630. This later becomes FS 2210, and 2630 becomes a less maintained road. Follow FS 2210 to hwy 22. Turn left onto hwy 22 and follow past Walton Lake. Soon after the lake, turn left onto FS 150, a dirt road. Go a little ways till 150 ends in a T. Go right onto FS 2630, and continue to the parking lot and Bus Village.
More map details
This is right near the Bridge Creek Wilderness area, and north of the Big Summit Prarie. I can see several springs on the map. Sortof behind the site is the Mt. Pisgah Lookout. It looks to be no more than 6000-6500 feet in altitude.
For general information about the Rainbow Family and regional events, please first look around an unofficial family website- go to Welcome Home at
www.welcomehome.org or email rob@welcomehome.org
www.welcomehome.org/rainbow/index.html

What is a Rainbow Gathering?
Carla's Gathering Basics
What follows is my take on it. No one put me in charge (thank goodness), so you may get other answers from other folks that add or subtract stuff - but basically I think most folks will be in agreement with what I see as being the basics for a gathering.
It is free and non-commercial. This means no entry fee and no money charged for any service at the event (food, medical, etc.). There are people at gatherings who hang out with the barter circle and essentially have a commercial trip going either with trade or cash, but this is their own personal trip and has nothing to do with the actual set-up of a gathering. I personally consider these folks in violation of the basic spirit of the gathering and wish they would go away, or at least put away their trade goods. But since we have no cops, no courts, and no jails, they continue to do as they please, over the objections of many but also with the support also of many. Anyway, with the exception of these folks who are taking advantage of the free space, you shouldn't find any commercialism at a gathering whatsoever.
Rainbow gatherings are non-aligned both spiritually and politically. There is no one right religious or spiritual belief; people of all faiths are welcome to come gather. Often, people from specific churches or temples come set up their own camp and feed lots of folks from their kitchens (the Krishnas and the Bread of Life Christian camp being the most notable). There are no hassles towards any church group proselytizing or trying to win converts - if people want to listen, that's their own business.
Rainbow also does not support any specific political cause, party, issue, or candidate. Many people come to gatherings to recruit for their own specific Peace Walk, Drums around the Pentagon, environmental action, or whatever; but again, that is their own trip. They certainly have the right of free speech to spread the word about whatever event they are sponsoring. But they do nothave the right to call it a Rainbow event or claim they have support of the Rainbow Family. If they do make such claims, they are ripping off the Family name. Folks involved in such actions have every right to also mention, if asked, that yes, they consider themselves to be Rainbows. No reason not to fly your colors, especially when you're doing something you consider a good cause and are proud of being involved in. You just can't say that your event (protesting logging the rainforest, for example) is a Rainbow protest as such.
We have no leaders. We operate by consensus process. No one is in charge, we have no board of directors. For many regional events, a small circle of people often initiates the event, and the circle grows and becomes many. All the labor of getting the gathering together in a safe and healthy manner is done by volunteers.
The only rule we have is that of peaceful respect. That actually encompasses a lot, when you stop and think about it. Sure, no one can tell anyone else what to do, but if someone builds an unsafe fire under a tree, they will hear about it (hopefully in a sweet way) from many people who are worried about the safety of the camp. We like to say that everyone is Shanti Sena (Peacekeeper). The idea is to communicate in such a way that folks doing something non-peaceful, non-respectful, unhealthy, or unsafe will see the error of their ways and choose to get with the program. When something really out of line occurs (a violent individual hitting someone with a club, for example) a Shanti Sena council (consisting in the ideal of all interested parties, as well as some experienced folks from the Shanti Sena Clan to give guidance and physical safety) forms to deal with the issue. If the victim of the violence wishes to press charges, the incident is dealt with accordinly, and the Shanti Sena folks cooperate in turning the perpetrator over to local law enforcement - a controversial move, to be sure, but in some cases unavoidable and sometimes even desirable. If no one wants to see the local authorities involved but a person is considered a danger to the safety of folks in camp, two options are commonly turned to: someone capable of handling the situation volunteers to accompany the offending person 24 hours a day around camp; or the person must leave the gathering and not come back that year.
As per a standing consensus by the Rainbow Family Tribal Council, we don't apply for or sign permits. With the new group use regulations instituted by the Forest Service this year, this has become a difficult position to hold. One regional gathering signed a permit and gathered under a different name than Rainbow. Weird, and lot of people were angry at the folks who signed the permit, but what are ya gonna do? Take away their hippie cards? Anyway, theoretically,if a gathering has a permit, it is by definition not a Rainbow Gathering.
Also, by long tradition, we do not gather anywhere but public land. Occassionallythere may be focussed councils (Thanksgiving Council, regional councils) that happen on private land, but gatherings themselves are always held on public land. Again, if it happens otherwise, it is by definition not a Rainbow Gathering, though the event may be very rainbow in nature otherwise.
We take responsibility for every aspect of the gathering, from set-up to clean-up. We don't ask for help bulldozing roads, getting donations from local charities or food banks. We are self-sufficient in every aspect of our gathering, and responsible for ourselves. Most important, when the gathering is over, many people stay behind to totally clean up the site. No janitors are paid to clean up after folks. Gatherers are expected to use the recycling center set up on site and to pack out what they packed in. The clean up crew takes out all trash to recycling centers and to landfills, then restores and rehabilitates the site. This may involve scarifying the earth to loosen up compacted areas, filling in ruts caused by vehicles, water-barring hilly areas, and reseeding the ground. All shitters and camps are disappeared and naturalized. This is a lot of work folks! If you've never stayed for cleanup, you've never really done a gathering. This is not a dead lot - this is real, this is a labor of love, and it's one of the only reasons, both karmically and politically, that the powers that be haven't put the ax to us long ago.
A Rainbow Gathering is not a rock concert or a platform for speakers. If cars are allowed in the gathering area proper, and if there is amplified music as a central theme, it most certainly is NOT a Rainbow Gathering (the drive-in gathering in Texas was an exception, as we were not allowed to close the road).
If it were up to me to define it, I would say this is the most important aspect of the Gathering: It is a free assembly of individuals who come together to practice peace. The focal point of the Annual Gathering July 1-7 is a coming together in a large circle, each person praying silently in their own way for peace. Most of the regional gatherings also set aside a day for the Silent Circle. A Rainbow Gathering is not a party, although partying certainly happens. It is not just a big hippie campout, although there are lots of counter-culture and new-age types camping in the woods. It is not just the world's largest love-in/be-in/ smoke-in, although a lot of that certainly goes on. For me, without the element of prayer we might as well not gather at all. For me, without the element of the Circle in which we participate, we mights as well have a hippie convention at the Hilton. For me, without the practice of Peaceful Respect and continuing attempts to create harmonyamong each other and all beings of the Earth, me might as well give up any pretense that the human race is evolving.
So, does that make things more clear? You'll probably get as many different answers as you will people answering. Good luck sorting it all out. The annual Rainbow Gathering of the Tribes will take place in the Northwest next July - Oregon or Washington. Stay tuned for directions, which will probably come out about amonth before the gathering!
Love and Light,
Carla

I'm going to make some slight changes (we want to do it before the sun sets; otherwise, we're going to get cold), flesh it out, and invite everyone.

FORMAL DRESS POOL PARTY
Friday, July 20, 7 p.m. (not 8:30 as previously announced)
Ira Keller Fountain (SW 3rd and Clay)

Put on formal wear that's way too hot for this weather, and then cool down in Keller Fountain ( http://farm1.static.flickr.com/54/178394348_c4b4b57958_b.jpg ), the series of concrete pools and waterfalls downtown where swimming is allowed.

Dress Code: Formal wear (but probably not your best clothes, and not dry-clean only -- the fountain is chlorinated, so you'll want to be able to wash that jacket and slacks before you wear them again!), possibly combined with pool/swimming gear -- inflatable floaties, kick boards, swimming caps, swim goggles, masks and snorkels, flippers, whatevs.

About the Fountain: The water is about swimming-pool temperature right now. The pools are deep enough to wade or sit in, and you can stand under the waterfalls. Nobody will kick you out of it, because swimming/wading isn't just allowed, there are people there every day doing it. But like the signs say, be careful on slippery surfaces and along the edges of the waterfall.
What kinds of things would you introduce an out of town wierd friend to, to show them how great and strange this city is? Pubs and bars are ok, but there are other threads for that...
Rules: Much like Santacon. Dress up, put on your flannels, wear a "hello my name is" tag with your Bill Pardy variant, or just with Bill Pardy on it.. come play, get drunk and go watch the series finale of Buffy on the big screen!
1. Seeing Our Major ride around on his bike half-drunk, wearing leaderhosen and making heron-calls to passers-by; WOOP WOOP!!
2. The Church of Elvis
3. Huge bus-wide conversations about local politics on the #15 bus.
4. When buses were stuck waiting for the bridges to come down, they would let us out and much of the bus would go out to see the way and what boats where coming through.
5. Pre-1998 when you could smoke marijuana publically at concerts, waterfront park events, and outdoor cafes and no one cared.
6. The huge flexi-buses that tri-met used to have.
7. uncrowed beaches (not weird i guess)
8. I once saw a girl scout troop give an elderly couple the finger because their licence-plate said "california"
9 The signs on the southern boarder of Oregon that used to say "Welcome to Oregon! Enjoy your VISIT."
10. Hawthorne when travelers from all over the world would stop at Coffee-people and the Arby's parking lot to play music and tell stories.
11. Hippie Hill.
12. The whole culture of 30-something neighbor activisits controlling decision-making
13. back when transportation projects made sense. (i.e. there weren't pointless Trams and stupid bus/max/bike/car renovations.
14. the vision to make downtown carfree
