I was pretty nervous but am *very* proud to bring home another award! <br/> <br/>First place was won by Stephania, who did a great drum solo, Second place went to a very talented male dancer from France, and I shared third place with Sophie, who did an amazing zill dance - sans music!! <br/> <br/>I just got back this Monday from a long weekend at Orits bellydance festival in Eilat with workshops and shows. <div>I have to say I am *very* proud of my coachees Chadia, Luna and Milka. Chadia and Luna won 3rd place for the Duo Classical category in Leyla Jouvanas Bellydancer of the world contest in Duisburg!!! AND: Milka had an awesome dance in the tribal category and rocked the drum solo improv part. AND: she won 2nd place together with Tine for the Duo Fusion category!!! GO Milka!!! :-) <br/> <br/>Aisa Lafour, a Dutch dancer won the 1st place in the main category this year, Razia was fifth (with only a few points difference!!!) and our very own Serkan danced fabulously and won a deserved 1st price in the male dancer category. And they are told to seek support. <br/> <br/>So - I will be taking 90 dance classes in 90 days. Videos count as a class as long as I actually do them for at least an hour straight. Yoga classes and fitness classes at the gym only count as 1/2 of a dance class. <br/> <br/>It doesn't only have to do belly dance stuff. Any style of dance class/video will do. Obviously, there is a focus on belly dance, but I believe that all forms of dance can be helpful to improving your belly dance. <br/> <br/>Anyone care to join me? <div>Still recovering from our 3,5 hour workshop on 'performance tips and tricks' yesterday in Aachen, Germany :-) We had tons of fun and I am *very* proud of all the students that were there. <br/> <br/>I particularly loved the "dancing with emotion" excercise and the "entrance of the stars" bit (including Michelle Joyce's footballrun!) The group was very attentive and the guided improvisation at the end looked very nice! <br/> <br/>Thanks again to everyone who participated, and an especially big thanks to the girls who came from afar to join. And what was the moment that really inspired you to learn even more about it? <br/> <br/>For me oriental dance was not something I was actively looking for.. it kind of found me. I was always a big fan of imitating video clips in my living room (yes, still do it at times ;-) and one day in winter, still living in Belgium, I tried to imitate a video clip with a girl singing and dancing on a cliff by the sea.. and failed at it! Arrr! Wh. .huh? <br/> <br/>Was instantly intrigued by the way she seemed to be able to move her hips independently from the rest of her body. Amazing :-) Found out later that it was Shakira, and that she was using belly dance movements in the clip (duh) . <br/> <br/>That same week I saw a short blurb about belly dance classes on TV Limburg and I was sold.. It was almost New Year so I decided to 'do something new' after the holidays and searched for belly dance classes in Belgium via internet at work (had no computer at home yet back then) So I stumbled on the site of 'Dans van de Morgenstond', who had classes in Holland and Belgium and signed up for a trial class in Genk with Myriam, my first teacher. She then asked me to join the summer classes of her sister Yamila in Heerlen and she in her turn asked me to join the 'Teacher/Dancer training' she teaches in Eindhoven in September. <br/> <br/>A few months after that I signed up for my first ever workshop, which was Leyla Jouvana's 1001 shimmies in Aachen. Leyla gave me a flyer for the Festival in Duisburg after the workshop, and I noticed Aziza was mentioned on there, of whom I found a tiny mini-video online and seeing that video was the moment it really 'clicked' for me. I saw her dancing live in November that year in Duisburg, and she talked to me very briefly at the workshop about 'being amazed' and 'allowing yourself to go for it'. <div>I was just thinking this morning about how belly dance can sneak into our daily lives and take over sometimes.. you know, belly rolling in the car, glute squeezes and headslides at stoplights.. <br/> <br/>But sometimes combining dance practice with work in the house can make life a bit easier too. <br/> <br/>For instance I heard from Moria that vacuuming is a great way to practice 3/4 shimmies, because you're constantly walking back and forth. So I tried it out this morning, and it really works! A bit difficult because keeping dance posture during vacuuming is not a usual thing :-) The actual housework will take a bit longer to be finished. Oh, and you can add one legged shimmy's if you have to stand still for corners etc.. ;-) <br/> <br/>Another one: Shimmy practice during brushing teeth. Ironing can also be combined with watching DVDs and shimmy practice at the same time.
