Welcome everyone to 2009. We've had a week or two to get used to the fact that the new year is here. So, what's going on with you, your dance and more?
For me - The Focus this year for me is The Year of Experiences. I want to focus less on stuff and more on sharing, the creative experience, and taking joy from every moment. So in that vein, here are the things I'm doing:
I've joined a band call The Dark Clan. I play keyboard bass and sing vocals. This is taking up a lot of my time, but it is something I've been wanting to do for a while. We have a show in Madison on March 5th, Minneapolis on March 6th, Milwaukee on March 7th, and Chicago on March 8th. Beginning in April, we'll be doing a mini East Coast tour to Baltimore, DC, and a few other places. I'll have more information as time passes.

Additionally, I've been dancing in local haflas as a soloist, as well as with Kelly and Kristel as a post-Barika experience, with Kelly as a folk dancer and comedy good time, and with Kristel on Khivan stuff. Way into the collaboration and community right now.
I'm heading to TribalCon in February to take some great workshops and spend some time working on the music side. I'll be leading some folk dancing with August's music. Hope to see some of you there.
Kelly and I are talking about having some workshops in the area - more to come on that.
Finally, I'm working on an event in Milwaukee that you guys are the first to know: Zafira Dance Company Intensive. You heard that right: Maria, Christine AND Olivia, all here, for a 12 hour, two day, hands-on intensive. Right now, we are working on all the technical details, but it will be on Monday and Tuesday, June 22nd and 23rd. That's RIGHT! You'll be able to take workshops with them at Tribal Revolution in Chicago, and then spend two days with them in a small group format, absorbing everything they offer! More will be coming out soon, including signups, posters, and in general more information about where, when, how much, etc. This is an opportunity that will be exciting for our area, as well as give people tools to really expand their practice and performance of dance.
So, tell me - what's going on with you!?

Re: What's Up in 2009
Tue, January 20, 2009 - 7:47 AMWell, since you asked..... (and if this plug is inappropriate, please delete it with my apologies)
If you're looking to get some tribal-y goodness in workshop format, I'm hosting Deb Rubin, formerly of Ultra Gypsy, down here in Elgin (West of Chicago) for two days of workshops April 25 and 26. I had Deb here just before Thanksgiving to do a workshop for my intermediate/advanced students and she rocks as a teacher!! Lots of new stuff and new ways of thinking about technique. Need info? www.rakschristina.com
There's always Tribal Rev too. Lots of work going into it again this year! Teachers are Zafira, Aretmis Mourat, Urban Gypsy, Sharon Moore, Raquy and the Cavemen, and Blue Lotus Tribe. www.tribalrevolution.com
As for my personal projects, there's always Blue Lotus Tribe and Tribal Revolution and you'll see more of us locally now that we have a less frantic travel schedule this year (at least until fall). We're hoping to do more local shows and community events as well as developing our own ITS format with lots of new formations and lead side switches... oh... and you should see the choreography we've got going on right now! It's quite different from anything we've done before!
In October, the ladies of Hipnotic and I are putting on the 2nd annual Midwest Tribal Mafia with workshops by the above named Lane and Kelly, along with Eliza from Jezebelly, Dark Side Tribal, Hipnotic, and Blue Lotus Tribe. Last year was a heap of fun and this year will be even bigger, badder, and better!! www.midwesttribalmafia.com
So, who do I pay for all this advertising space? ;-) -

Mon, January 26, 2009 - 7:45 PMNever inappropriate for the community, or ever for you.
Which reminds me...I noticed that you had some events that you were teaching too. Tell us more about those! I couldn't make the last one, but I'm thinking about the other ones.
I'd like to go to Deb Rubin's workshop, but that ALL depends on my work schedule - bad time of the year for me. I'll be a last minuter if at all.
