I am looking for a steampunk inspired camp or crew to play with at Burning Man ...

I work for emergency services on the playa and I have an early entry as soon as 8/22. I am willing to help set up any camp, structures, etc.
I will be leaving from Portland.

I am a wilderness first responder, firefighter, psytrance dj, reiki master, licensed laserist, among many other talents...

Any suggestions, contacts, etc appreciated.

I recently traveled to New South Wales where I had the opportunity to track down some live steam. The Canberra Railway museum has a few locomotives in excellent condition, but the one I was interested in was a Garratt:

http://users.powernet.co.uk/hamilton/bgpix/6029-12.jpg

This is a huge articulated bushfreight locomotive. Old ads for it showed a family of six seated around a dinner table in its firebox.

Theirs had its cab and tender off. Sitting next to it was a boiler from a Victoria sawmill that had run up until the 90s. The new boiler had had its stat test, and so we were taking all the fittings off of the old boiler and putting them on the new one for another test.

You guys should feel lucky that your shop is not so infested with brown snakes and funnel-web spiders.

I also found this locomotive graveyard in Snoqualmie Falls, Washington:

Introduction and asking for some assistance.

Hello all,

First off I’m LeChatNoir. For Burning Man 2007, I brought a human powered art car with steampunk flair called “The Contraption”. It was made almost completely from old rusty farm implements and resembled a railroad handcar, but with big steel wheels.

I was around the Steampunk Treehouse one evening and was talking with a gentleman who had created a steam engine for his wagon-wheeled trike comprised of an old air compressor pump running off a monotube type boiler for a steam carpet cleaner. Of course I can’t recall the fellow’s name and I had genuinely intended to seek him out again before leaving the playa, but of course it didn’t’ work out.

I’m now trying to find him and hoped this might be a place to start. I’m in the planning stages of a similar steam “upgrade” to The Contraption and hoped to find some small amount of advice. If anyone is, or knows, who I’m speaking of, could you please contact me or pass on my tribe profile link?

For reference, here’s a link to a dust storm pic of The Contraption in my tribe photos:

And thanks to everyone who's working to bring Steampunk to the playa. You make a lot of people happy with your efforts.

Hello All: I need photos of KSW doing its thing at the 2007 Fire Arts Festival. Photos of steam being emitted onto the stage and engulfing the stage/audience would be especially useful. This is for KSW's website, so... I need to attribute the photos and get permissions, URLs please.

Steam Powered Theremin? Any takers?

Here's the deal, we/KSW will have a steam powered electrical generator. A belt powered by the Case Traction Engine will spin a dynamo that in turn generates the electricity.

Ah, but what to *DO* with the power?

Multi-User / Group Theremin (how could you have answered otherwise)!

The concept, instead of having a single player manipulating the field between two 16" antennae, the concept would be to mega-size the Theremin and have two 16' - 20' FOOT antennae (running parallel to the ground, a few feet off the ground). In essence, individuals or groups would have to run/move in the space between and possibly coordinate with each other to create music.

Q: Is this feasible, technically possible, safe?

Q: Anyone interested in developing this idea?

Kinetic Steam Works will host dynamic demonstrations of steam power with a collection of repurposed vintage equipment driving interactive sculptures just days before their appearance at the Coachella festival in the Palm Springs desert.
An Auxiliary boiler, assorted mill engines, and a 1920 Case traction engine are the force behind a collection of awe-inspiring and personally engaging sculptures including a hand fabricated working carousel by Jamie Vaida, brass instruments plumbed with falling water and rising steam by Stephen Rademaker, a towering 22’ tall fire and waterfall by Orion Fredrick, and a live performance by spygirl and Sean Orlando. “The Dingus Smashing Show” uses a 1920’s ironworker to crush anything placed between its gears, a gross example of juvenile delinquency at it’s most entertaining.
The Pre Coachella Steam-up happens Saturday, April 21st at NIMBY warehouse, 1649 28th street Oakland.

Greetings steam friends,

Time for our monthly meeting @ The Pacific Coast Brewing Company! There has been a lot going on in KSW land, starting with I broke the traction engine (according to Greg Jones Kinetic Steam Works). We were about to leave for the Art Murmur on Friday night when we broke a bolt that held the one side of the boiler on the rear spring. Saturday and Sunday was spent trying to replace that one bolt and finally we were successful.

We will be lighting off tonight and going for a test drive around 8pm to check that everything is in order for our event on Saturday night. Stop by if you like.

Hopefully we will have a good turn out for the meeting on Thursday, we have some big plans for next year and we need to figure it all out.

Yours in steam,

We will be replacing the cracked D-valve packing nut (aka big job) with the freshly machined one courtesy of our friend Bob @ B&B Steam Restoration.

We are also very exited about our new steam powered water pump. We are going to begin the process of a full restoration. This project will need all hands.

There are lots of little jobs as well so please don’t be concerned about skill level! I guarantee everyone that can make it can be put to good use!

We're going to be steaming up this Saturday for the Africa Burns event at NIMBY.
We're going to be hooking up the 100' flat belt to the Dingus(PTO) and running the engine in the outside yard.
Come on down. This should be a really fun party.

Steamboat Regatta: Sept 22-24

--Hey gang here's a copy-and-paste of the word file announcing the imminent steamboat regatta. Oh, and the word from Dick Vennerbeck is that Ron Parola's steam powered Margarita blender will be there and working too. Any chance you all can bring the Case along? Wish I coulda found it on the Playa; I hear it was mooey strange! :-)
--------------------------------
2006 Sacramento Delta Steamboat Regatta

Attention all boat captains and crew! Ready those boats! The time is approaching to attend the 32nd Sacrament Delta Steamboat Regatta held at the famous B&W Resort, 964 Brannon Island Rd., Delta Loop, California (ph. 916-777-6161). The official dates are Sept. 23, 2006 and Sept. 24, 2006 (give or take a few days as some arrive early & some stay late).

This year will be a ‘lil bit blah as we are not expecting notorious Jesse James & crew of the “Monster Garage”. What a great time we had last year with the bang & back race and being filmed for national televised viewing!

This year it is back to the standard menu of having a great time with just the usual group and activities. Main activity will be boating so pack lots of wood, oil or gas ( yes, gas burning boats are always welcome!) Add a few vintage steam cars and motorcycles for an entertaining weekend. Don’t forget your sunscreen as the weather has been very hot and sunny this summer. Then again, we have experienced cold days & showers in past years so do bring a jacket or sweatshirt.

Saturday’s picnic cruise to Westgate Landing Park @ Terminous will leave around 10:00 A.M. It has been suggested by MOJO’s Captain John Woodsen that this might be a good time to snap some group pictures of the “fleet” as they maneuver the treacherous currents of the Mokelumne River.

Upon returning to the B&W docks, it will be time for that much anticipated swap meet. Bring your unwanted treasures to the dock area to sell or swap. If you have nothing to sell and don’t want to buy, come and swap B.S. with your fellow captains. B.S. is FREE!

Saturday evening the gang always has a potluck dinner. We meet on the levee road (between the upper cabins & the boat docks). Please bring your favorite dishes to share. Appetites are hearty. Main dishes, salads and deserts are always delicious. Picnic tables and benches are provided. Our gracious host, B& W Resort, has requested that kitchen tables and chairs found in the cabins remain in the cabins. Please do not bring them outside. A short meeting is held after the potluck with the usual announcements & presentations. I say short meeting as the mosquitoes (nasty little bugs) tend to arrive at dusk. Speaking of critters, please remember that pets are not welcome guests at B&W Resort.

Now, back to boating with a night run down the Channel. Running light are a must and remember that people do live along the shore so don’t torment them too much with those whistles & sirens! I can’t believe I just typed that!!!

Planned for Sunday morning is an unofficial trip down the main channel for breakfast. Two choice places are Moore Riverboat Landing or Light House Resort.

See you soon and let’s make it a safe, fun and memorable occasion.
Regards, Jerry & Phyllis Blain

KSW work day Saturday 9/30 @ NIMBY

Hey KSW folks,

We are having a work day this coming Saturday 9/30 in preparation for Decompression. http://www.burningman.com/blackrockcity_yearround/special_events/decompression/decom2006.html
The Engine and the Tender need a good cleaning, and some repairs are needed.
We would like to get the pin striping done on the Tender, repair our broken spoke, replace pump packing, etc.

If you think you can make it, please let me know so I can do some planning.
We will be working most of the day so come by when you can.
Most work will be happening around the middle of the day so if you were here by 11 or noon that would be great!
You were so sweet to take us around for so many nights, and now I am all about the steam. I have nary a mechanical bone in my ever loving body, but by god, I will make some just so I can have my own steam powered vehicle someday. You are an inspiration, it's true, but mostly, you are just supa fine.

Well... we steamed up on Saturday and Sunday.
The dingus was assembled on Sunday night and connected to the drive shaft of the carousel. We ran a 100ft belt from the flywheel of the engine to the dingus... and we spun the carousel with two rides on it. Everything worked wonderfully. There's still lots more work to be done, but we've gotten over the major hump. We started with steam and went to the flywheel - belt - flywheel - two bull gears - two larger drive gears - large flywheel - small flywheel - clutch mechanism - three drive shafts - gear box - thrust bearing - butterfly...
We'll be working down at NIMBY every night on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Come on down if you feel like wrenching on something. We officially pack things up on Thursday night...
Emergency call for fabricators - The Dingus needs you

KSW is in desperate need of fabricators and welders. We need to test the dingus this Saturday & Sunday and there is still a lot of fabrication that needs to be done on it. The dingus is the power transfer unit between the steam engine's flywheel belt and the carousel "What Goes Around Comes Around" that Jamie Vaida has been working tirelessly on night and day.

If you've got any fabrication skills at all or even if you're a fast learner, come on down to NIMBY today anytime after two. We'll feed you, buy you beer, give you a free KSW T-shirt, kiss your feet, fluff your privates, etc...

So I've decided to abandon the fire poofers. I was never really satisfied with the asthetics of the design (not to mention that I melted my solenoids at the Fire Arts Festival). I've since designed two ambient propane flame lanterns to replace them. They're pretty fancy and should complement the new canopy nicely. Pics to follow soon...

Brian and I started fabrication on the tender on Tuesday. We've got a big work day this Friday the 23rd starting at noon. We could really use some help on the fabrication side of the frame. We'll be finishing off the frame and mounting the new leaf springs and axle I bought. I also could use some help with the poofers which will be mounted on the rear of the tender and operated by the Tender Tender. Come on down to The Crucible this friday.

He's always looking for more work, but maybe he's also interested in a collaboration or something. Using his equipment would be awesome.

The first of the steam powered kinetic art projects is getting underway with artist Jamie Vaida at the helm http://www.jamievaida.com/

Jamie and several kinetic artists in collaboration with Kinetic Steam Works are planning the fabrication of a full sized, steam powered carousel. Many great concepts are being considered including having children design a good portion of the esthetic. Jamie has some ambitious concepts and we are looking for artists and fabricators that might want to go for a ride.

Hey guys,
collaboration with artists interested in steam powered kinetic art for
