Books on the subject of praise dancing

Searching the internet recently, as I do from time to time with regards to belly dancing, praise dancing, music for the 2 as one, I ran across a few interesting things. A couple books, some web sites I would like to share.

Being a tribal dancer, I felt like the vocabulary of dance moves I have learned over the years is an easy enough transition to praise dance that should not be too offensive for even the most fussy church goer. Plus we do not choreograph so much as make use of cuing and the follow the leader type of dance. There is so much folkloric based movement in this, it seems a natural pairing for me. I just performed something like I would do at the ren faire, at my church, in a fund raising show, and got a lot of positive feedback. It is already known that I am a bellydancer and a regular dancer at the local ren faire, so it was no big shock that I performed in that manner. It is totally family friendly, in costume and dance.

Two books on the subject of praise dancing I got:

Dancing for Joy, a Biblical Approach to Praise and Worship by Murray Silberling. He is called the Dancing Rabbi, and is a Messianic Jew

Dancing into the Annointing, Touching the Heart of God Through Dance by Aimee Verduzco Kovacs She has some interesting takes on the spiritual benefits of praise dancing

Both of these I purchased at www.christianbooks.com

Another cool and unrelated book I am reading is Can You Hear Me? Tuning in to the God who speaks by Brad Jersak. If you are interested in deepening your prayer life this is a great book. Especially if you are seeking guidance! I took a class based on his book and it was actually fun. Amazon sells this one.

On the subject of music, I found some by searching through the Messianic Jewish genre. Here you have some with middle eastern musical overtones we like to dance to but if there are words, they are worshipful and praising. Very cool! 3 I just got are:

Messianic Violin by Les Morrison, really great music here
Garment of Praise, the Refuge of Worship, Kathy Shooster
Hallelu et Adonai, Praise the Lord, Ted Pearce

These too came from the christian books web site.

For those interested in adding some Hebrew praise dance steps to your bellydance based praise dances, check into the Messianic Dance Camp dvd series. www.messianic-dance-camps.info

I hope some of this info is useful!

2 B or not 2 B? THAT IS THE QUESTION!

Hello! Thanks for the welcomes!

I just started the whole bellydance thing this summer. Learning a lot and a lot still to learn.

I was very drown to bd at first. Attended my first class in July. Then was sitting home through the whole month of august watching youtube, listening to bd music and sucking it up!! In September started an ongoing class and got to know a little bit about the bellydance community here... That's when I stared having second thoughts... Most of the bellydancers here in my area seem to be in some kind of whitchcraft, GOTH movements or something and it really pushed me away. Felt like I was compromising my christianity. That's when I stared my research on christian bellydancers. Found you guys, got a little reassured but still don't have my own oppinion about this.

At this point I am just taking practical lessons and enjoy it but I feel like I want to go deeper but won't because of that. Do I make sence? Tribal fusion is pretty popular here arounf bellydancers and I don't think I feel right about it. Traditional or ATS looks less demending to me as far as "being spiritual" with it.

Another big question for me is the outfits, well actually the body exposure. I love to dress up for belly dance with the bellydance bling and open belly and everything. Love to show off my body.. but if you ask me how it goes with christian modesty nad morals... honestly I dont know what to say. So far I enjoy doing it for my husband, he is half armenian. But REALLY don't know if I should do it for a bigger audience. Well of course I think there's coustumes with "more coverage" out there :D, but belly dance is all about the belly and hips isn't it?

I am being serious and sorcasitc... May I?

So here I am! Love to dance. LOVE belly dance. Think I am the only christian around these bellydancers here. HONESTLY - DON'T KNOW HOW FAR I CAN GO WITH IT!
Hope to hear strong honest christian opinions about this!! Don't bother if you tend go around the bushes ;)

"we posess this precious treasure in vessels of earth
that the grandeur and exceeding greatness of power
may be shown to be from God and not from ourselves"

This verse gave me such a vision for a choreography while I was listening to the message last Sunday! It involves balancing and fire so someone would have to know what they were doing to perform it but here it is...
I saw this verse pertaining to the concept that we are imperfect so that God can work thru us and people might understand that our accomplishments are due to His intervention, not our own efforts. There is a sense of honesty, humility and responsibility, carrying a precious gift to light the world...
Room would be dim or outdoors at night. Dancers would perform balancing a vessel on their heads, cracked & imperfect but intact so that the light from the candle resting within would shine thru and illuminate the cracks, highlighting those imperfections but at the same time revealing the light within. The vessel representing us. Without the imperfections no one could see the light we house inside. A group of at least three, in sync, would be ideal.
You could get more dramatic and theatrical if you wanted to include a larger group, have some clusters of women flank either side on their knees, doing gestures in attempt to 'repair the imperfections of their vessels by their own power' instead of dancing with them as they are- so the difference could be clear to the audience that without the cracks, the light is not visible. ....it is much more beautiful, effective, useful to be honest about yourself & allow God to work thru those 'flaws' then try to make people think you have no problems, no struggles

just a fleeting thought- I get these a lot during church and in the car when I hear an inspiring song, if anyone likes the ideas, I can keep them coming... I can't do much with them myself, so it would be nice to know if other people could use them

I am posting a prayer request here. I have a brother (one of 3), in his 40's with 5 children, who has just been diagnosed with Guillaine Barre syndrome and is losing use of leg muscles as a result. Pretty tough for a former football and hockey player with 5 kids to support. Anyway, he will undergo treatment, which began last night, and I am asking for prayer for him and the family. I live in FL and they are far away in Mukwanago Wisconsin, so my hands on help is not possible. Only prayer hands. Will you add him to your prayers? I sure thank you.

I will be posting this in my other tribes too.

Greetings all belly dancing beauties!

Last winter, an idea was brought up to create a calendar featuring our big, beautiful, belly-dancer (BBBD) sisters and there was such a huge, positive response that this idea has become a reality!

The creative mindset behind this idea, BBBD Meghan, asked BBBD Kamala Devi to chair this project, and with the help of some very motivated BBBD sisters, we are pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications from other BBBD sisters for the BBBD 2008 Calendar!

Click on the following link for additional information:

http://totallynortherntribal.com/BBBD.Calendar.htm

Please read all the information carefully and follow the instructions. If you have any questions, please send a Tribe PM to Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi.

The deadline for your application is July 31, 2007.

We are all looking forward to this project and are eager to see how the calendar turns out. We hope that this is successful enough to become an annual calendar.

Thanks everyone!

Kamala Devi and the BBBD 2008 Calendar Committee

DISCLAIMER: there is no connection between Totally Northern Tribal (TNT) and the BBBD 2008 Calendar. Calendar chairperson Kamala Devi, a member of TNT, linked off her TNT Member’s Page.

Dancing in a service?

So I've been thinking about doing this for a while.
My church is extremely open to different types of worship (we have a rock band at each service).
They even have a "dance ministry" that I have never seen perform.
How would you dance in this particular venue. This will be for more than just my personal worship, it will
be for the congregation, so I need to be sensitive to peoples comfort levels. How would you approach this?
How would I even convince them that I'm not gonna do a hoochy coochy dance?

any and all advice is welcome

thanks!

Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him Master.
Had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher.
Had no medicines, yet they called Him Healer.
Had no army, yet kings feared Him.
He won no military battles, yet He conquered the world.
He committed no crime, yet they crucified Him.
He was buried in a tomb, yet He lives today.
Feel honored to serve such a Leader who loves us.
HAVE A BLESSED WEEK!
If you believe in God and in Jesus Christ His Son, send this to your buddy list
