Advice for a younger visitor regarding the SF BDSM scene?

Hello everyone,

I'm going to be visiting SF from March 8th-15th, and am trying to get a feel for the scene and various parties before I go. There is a lot to wrap my mind around - I'm from the Boston area, and as such am used to there being virtually no scene where I live.

I'm going to be staying in Union Square without a vehicle, and I've noticed quite a few venues in the area, such as Bondage A Go Go, Power Exchange and The Citadel. The latter I have noticed is hosting three play parties while I'll be around (one of them being the Edukink Paideia class).

I'm right now trying to get a feel for what events would be most like what I'm looking for. I have heard for instance that The Citadel tends to be an older crowd, and I would feel a little uncomfortable with no one my age around to play with (I am twenty-three). Additionally, I am a straight submissive - so I would hope to find dominant women somewhat close to my age.

I've heard that Bondage A Go Go would have a crowd closer to my age, but it seems to be a much tamer environment than say The Citadel. I definitely am interested in experiencing a play party while I'm visiting, and Bondage A Go Go doesn't seem to be the choice for that.

It's my understanding that Power Exchange used to be a little too sleazy, but just reopened recently. Does anyone have anything to add about it?

I am also considering going by the San Francisco Corporal Punishment debut party, hosted that same weekend (sf-cp.com). Zille says that currently the crowd for it seems to mainly be leaning towards the younger side.

Does anyone have suggestions of where to go, or what to check out while I am in town? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Moderator Position

It seems our moderator has either been unsubscribed by tribe or he's left on his own. Either way we need a new moderator and I'd like to volunteer for the position, with this tribes blessing. I've been a member of the San Francisco Bay Areas kinky community since 1994, a former member of Janus, a former member of the now defunct Scenery in San Jose and later Hayward and a member of the SF Citadel since it's creation. My intention is simply to hold onto this tribe until such a time when Kink-e-Zine relaunches or I get some word that Kink-e-Zine will definately not be resurrected.

In order to select a new moderator one must start a thread showing interest and then members of this tribe can post their blessing or otherwise. Anyone else interested in becoming the moderator for this tribe must start their own thread and get support.

So if you'd like me to become the moderator for this tribe please respond here, in this thread.

Thank you,
Kink-e-Zine in hibernation....

Maintaining a publication such as Kink-e-Zine takes a lot of planning, hard work, attention to detail, staying abreast of news within the BDSM/Kink/Leather/Fetish communities worldwide, & most of all, TIME!

Sometimes things don't come together at the right time...& before you know it you hve missing segments & missing monthly issues due to not enough content, as has happened in 2009.

Forgive Me for being a perfectionist when it comes to Kink-e-Zine, but I steadfastly stand by My guns when I say now what I've said before...& that is, rather than publish an issue of Kink-e-Zine that doesn't meet the level of publication that We're capable of producing, I'd no sooner not publish!

And this is where We are now! Due to a significant lapse in Staff production, I have no choice but to cease publication of Kink-e-Zine while major transformations are made with Staff as well as new webhosting.

I promise that once We're "back from hibernation" that Kink-e-Zine will be bigger, better & more powerful than ever before...don't forget Us!

Many of you fellow kinksters have gotten a glimpse of what's become the hottest must-have item in fetish clothing...CUSTOM AIRBRUSHED SF CITADEL VESTS!! You've seen them worn at open play parties, at Pride Parade/Leather Alley, at the Dore Alley Fair, at Folsom Street Fair...haven't you asked yourself, "how can I get one of those...?"

Well---here's your answer! Bring your leather vests out to Lady Thorn's S/M Flea on Sunday, August 9th at SF Citadel & have it custom airbrushed to your satisfaction. Choose your favourite colour, your nickname or scene name--maybe even a special symbol or kink item that identifies with you. AND for this one day only, they'll be available at the affordable price of ONLY $50!! Makes figuring out what do wear for the Fandango party (immediately following Lady Thorn's Flea) that much easier!

Have another project in mind? Stop by the booth & talk it over with Me or just bring it--no project too big or too small.

AND WHILE YOU'RE AT THE BOOTH...make sure & check out the incredible donated items available for the SF CITADEL SILENT AUCTION, to raise funds to replace SF Citadel Co-Owner August Knight's precious laptop. Toys, fetishwear, services, personal classes/workshops...& the main item---a one-of-a-kind airbrushed SF CITADEL LEATHER TOYBAG, valued at $300!!!

GET YOUR BIDS IN...& GOOD LUCK!!!

Help Us Help August!

We are planning a Silent Auction at Lady Thorn's Flea on August 9th, all proceeds to go toward replacing August's missing laptop, which someone with no scrupples whatsoever recently stole from SF Citadel!

Do you have new or gently used toys or fetish gear you no longer want? Are they just taking up space in your toy bag? Why not donate them to a good cause? You can always buy more at the flea. ;)

Do you make floggers, jewelry, paddles, corsets? Why not donate a sample of your art to the auction?

Do you have a skill or service you could donate? Massage, housecleaning, boot blacking, photography? Be creative!!

Donations are being accepted at the Citadel. You'll see the big bin as you enter. If you have something that's too big for the bin - spanking bench, etc. - please contact Me and we can try to arrange a pick-up. Monetary donations can be given to Phil in person or mailed to:

Phil Derby,
c/o SF Citadel
1277 Mission Street
San Francisco, CA 94103

If you prefer PayPal, donations can be sent to paypal@stevebower.com

Everyone---repeat, EVERYONE---please help Us help August by contributing to this worthwhile cause! What may be just another laptop to some of you is a VITAL part of SF Citadel operations to August...correspondence with the BDSM community, workshop/event bookings, trip planning, meeting notes, etc. In short, a LOT day-to-day duties are conducted by August via her precious laptop; & without it, not only does she as Co-Owner of Our beloved space lose out, but We as patrons of SF Citadel lose out too!!

As I mentioned, what We plan to do is have the items laid out for silent auction at Lady Thorn's S/M Flea on Sunday, August 9 (the table will be setup next to My airbrushing booth) for All to bid on. At 3:45pm, all bids will cease & winners can come up to claim their rewards...& We can proudly present August with what We hope will be enough revenues to purchase a new laptop before her birthday (which, for those of you who don't know is August 12---3 days after Lady Thorn's Flea!)

Let's ALL do Our share to give something back to someone who has given so much of herself for Us....

Thank You!
SF CITADEL'S PRIDE PARADE CONTINGENT MEETING, TUESDAY 6/23, 8PM!!

Hey everyone!

Now's the time to start putting everything all together to insure that We have an incredible presence in this year's Pride Parade. The SF Leather Pride Contingent & the marchers from SF Citadel have always been an organized, entertaining crowd favorite...& We won't disappoint them this year!! The meeting will be at 8pm. (immediately following the "Safewords" meeting)

Things We'll be discussing in this all-important meeting:

* discussing safety rules for contingents
* previewing Our contingent layout for this year's parade
* discussing meeting time/location for the parade
* filling in "specialty" marchers slots (i.e., flag bearers, motorcyclists, singletails/florentine floggers, human ponies, etc)
* organizing the float build crew & float tear-down crew

So, if you're interested in being a "specialty" marcher, a wheel monitor, a contingent monitor, a float build or tear-down crewperson, or just want to show your Citadel Pride & march with Us, this is the meeting you MUST attend!!!

ALSO...DON'T FORGET...

...wheel/contingent monitors are a vital part of Our being able to march in the Pride Parade---without them, We cannot march! With that said, there're still plenty of dates left for monitor training; We need as many people as possible to be trained/certified to insure We can all march!

* Sun 6/14, 12:00 pm Kaiser Permanente, 1150 Veterans Blvd, Redwood City
* Sun 6/14, 3:00 pm Urban Life Center, 1111 O'Farrell St, SF
* Wed 6/17, 7:00 pm Kaiser Permanente, 1800 Harrison, Oakland
* Fri 6/19, 7:00 pm Ceremonial Room - The Center, 1800 Market St., SF
* Sat 6/20, 12:00 pm Koret Auditorium - SF Library, 100 Larkin St, SF
* Sat 6/20, 3:00 pm Women’s Building Auditorium, 3543 18th St, SF
* Tue 6/23, 8:30 pm Head over Heels, 4701 Doyle St # F, Emeryville (this meeting is Contingent/Wheel monitors only, no Safety training follows.)

AFTER YOU COMPLETE YOUR TRAINING, PLEASE EMAIL ME VIA TRIBE MAIL WITH YOUR CONFIRMATION CODE SO I CAN KEEP A PROPER TALLY OF HOW MANY MONITORS WE HAVE!!

Thank you all!!
TOMORROW--6/9--"BDSM & Parenting" workshop with Master Erik

"BDSM & PARENTING," With Master Erik

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 8pm-10pm
SF Citadel; 1277 Mission Street, SF
http://www.sfcitadel.org

Admission: $20

You're kinky, you're active in your community...& you're a PARENT! Balancing the two lifestyles can be awkward, & dealing with them can be nothing short of difficult at times. In this workshop, we'll discuss ways in which being a "kinky parent" can be managed through the 3 phases of parenthood (Infancy/Toddlers, Pre-Teen/Teens, & Late Teens/Young Adults), as well as the opportunity to trade "words of wisdom" amongst ourselves. This will be the first time this workshop has been presented in the SF Bay Area, so if you're a couple with children, a single parent, contemplating becoming a parent someday, or just like to play parent, this is a must-attend workshop!

BIO: Master Erik has enjoyed 22 wonderful years of being involved in BDSM communities in the Southeastern US, the UK, & the last 8 years in the SF Bay Area as a staffperson, DM, party host, and workshop presenter. He's a devoted member of SF Citadel Volunteer Staff, DMA, Publisher of Kink-e-Zine, the reigning 2008 Iron Dom...& the proud parent of a 14-year old son (who knows that "Daddy's into some weird stuff!")

Kinky Crafts III: Toymaking Workshop,
With Master Erik

Saturday, April 18th
1pm-5pm

SF Citadel
1277 Mission Street; SF
415-626-1746
www.sfcitadel.org

Admission: $45

We've all been in this scenario before---toy shopping at the local leathers store, and finding ourselves either leaving empty-handed because of how expensive they are or spending hundreds of dollars for just one toy. While leaving, we say to ourselves, "if only I could make my own toys"....well, that time is NOW!

Join Master Erik for a special 4-hour workshop, where he will cover the basics to getting started on making your own floggers, crops, canes, and cat o'nine tails. You'll also learn about shopping for inexpensive materials, leather braiding, and knots commonly used in toy making. Admission for the workshop includes an instructional worksheet to take home with you, and a pre-packaged kit with all the materials needed to make a functional, utilitarian tomcat whip.

TO ENSURE ENOUGH MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED FOR EVERYONE IN ATTENDANCE, PLEASE RSVP TO master_eriks_realm@yahoo.com

BIO: Master Erik has been enjoying the BDSM lifestyle for almost 22 years, playing, volunteering, and giving workshops in Europe, the Southeastern US, and the last 8 years in the SF Bay Area. He is a member of SF Citadel Volunteer Staff, Dungeon Monitors Association, and is Publisher of Kink-e-Zine online, as well as Owner/Proprietor of Airbrush By Master Erik. His handmade "weapons of ass destruction" can be seen--and felt!--most weekends at SF Citadel play parties.

I posted this on Fetlife a minute or so ago while answering a question Jamil had, but I figure I'd post int on here too so I can perhaps get more responses. Jamil was wondering why more people aren't posting on the Fe6tlife group, and that got me thinking...

This is going to require additional discussion among the staff, but what do people think about using the different social networking sites that we're members on as a place for readers to leave their comments and/or questions about the zine at? Not like general "How do you play with this?" questions (we already have someone who answers those questions), but more like "I really liked (such and such article. Can you...?" or "what do I do if I want to post (this or that)?" sort of things. We can answer those questions and even publish some of the ones we find to be good. It'll increase our visibility to people, and it'll make us more interactive.

Just a thought.

KINK-E-ZINE STAFF POSITIONS OPEN!!

Kink-e-Zine is an online publication serving the BDSM, Leather, Kink & Fetish communities. Within one year, we have seen coverage expand from exclusively San Francisco Bay Area to nationwide, with worldwide coverage in the works. In order to make such a vital publication as Kink-e-Zine, my responsibility is to make sure that a proficient Staff is in place to insure smooth operations with each monthly issue. Are you someone who wants to contribute your knowledge of the BDSM, Leather, Kink & Fetish lifestyle? Are you someone who can meet deadlines necessary to publish issues on time? Do you want to “give back to your community” in some capacity? Then maybe Kink-e-Zine is something you---and we---can benefit from as a Staffperson!

Kink-e-Zine has openings for the following positions. Please keep in mind that these positions are strictly voluntary at the time, as Kink-e-Zine is presently a free publication; however, plans are to establish a tiered system in the near future, which would produce revenues to offer monthly stipends for Kink-e-Zine Staff.

Please email publisher@kink-e-zine.com with the position you are interested in, telling a bit about your background in the scene, pertinent experience you have that would qualify you for the position you’re applying for, and if possible, samples of your work. Due to the time-sensitive nature of each issue published monthly, it is requested that you seriously consider your time availability and commitment to this cause before applying.

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: NOVEMBER 30, 2008

http://www.kink-e-zine.com

Master Erik, Publisher

ASSISTANT EDITOR: The Assistant Editor’s primary responsibility is assisting the Publisher and the Chief Editor with communication of the Staff---emails on Kink-e-Zine information, procuring articles from Staff and the community, and copyediting/proofreading. Submittal of articles for Kink-e-Zine is strictly on an “at will” basis, and not a requirement for the position. Previous editing/proofreading experience is essential, with good spelling/punctuation, as well as familiarity with Yahoo, Tribe, and Fetlife for community contact.

STAFF COLUMNIST (2 openings): The Staff Columnist is a literary “jack-or-all-trades” (or jill!) when it comes to producing quality articles for any segment of Kink-e-Zine, on virtually any topic deemed of interest to our readers. This is a Staff position whereas your articles educate, enlighten, and entertain! Sometimes you’ll even be given assignments to interview some of the foundations of the San Francisco BDSM community, or to review events (EEB, IMsL, Folsom Street Fair, etc.) Submittal of articles for Kink-e-Zine carries a minimum requirement of 1-2 articles monthly. Please attach a sample of your writing in the body of the email, not as an attachment.

“LGBT TALK” COLUMNIST: The “LGBT Talk” Columnist is “the voice of the San Francisco Bay Area LGBT community” to the world, and should be passionate about the work he/she does. The “LGBT Talk” Columnist should be someone with good writing skills, good resources for information, and actively involved in the San Francisco Bay Area LGBT Leather scene. Submittal of articles for Kink-e-Zine carries a minimum requirement of 1-2 articles monthly. Please attach a sample of your writing in the body of the email, not as an attachment.

“TRUE COLORS” COLUMNIST: The “True Colors” Columnist will be instrumental in making Kink-e-Zine’s newest segment a big success with articles, interviews, and history focused on Kink People of Color. The “True Colors” Columnist should be someone with good writing skills, good resources for information, and actively involved in the POC Leather scene in his/her community. Submittal of articles for Kink-e-Zine carries a minimum requirement of 1-2 articles monthly. Please attach a sample of your writing in the body of the email, not as an attachment.

“PROFFESIONALS” EDITOR: The “Professionals” Editor will work with the Publisher and the Advertising / Sales Coordinator and will hold the responsibility of coordinating “Professionals”---Kink-e-Zine’s segment focusing on Pro Dom/mes, subs & Switches, and Kink aware professionals nationwide. Previous/current work in the professional industry would be very beneficial, as well as active involvement in the Leather scene in his/her community.

ADVERTISING / SALES COORDINATOR: The Advertising / Sales Coordinator reports to the Publisher and Chief Editor, holding a very important responsibility within Kink-e-Zine---generating revenues to cover costs of Kink-e-Zine operations through procurement of selling advertising space to businesses, events, and organizations on a per issue and annual basis contract. This will be the only active paid Staff position until the new tier system is established, on a percentage commission based on sales. Advertising / Sales background is essential to make it work…and to keep Kink-e-Zine afloat!

Publicity for the zine

Dear friends,

Now that we're up and running, I think we need to do more to promote the zine. I run into people all the time who've never heard of us - experienced people in the scene - but they're not on Tribe, and miss out on all of our fabulous conversations here.

I'd like to propose that we produce two things - a generic business card with the site's address on it, and a palm card suitable for distributing to bars, clubs, dungeons, stores, etc., both here and in other areas of the country. If we made it as a postcard, we could even mail them places.

Whaddaya think? Can we get our intrepid designers on it?
xoxo,
Rio

LGBT Talk Columnist

“LGBT Talk” covers news, events, and articles pertinent to the LGBT communities of the San Francisco Bay Area and abroad. As an LGBT Talk Columnist, you bring the flavour of the community to Kink-e-Zine readers on a monthly basis. This position requires great writing skills with special attention to grammar and minimal error, the ability to make deadlines and maintain contact with other Staff members, and in some instances, the ability to conduct live interviews and transfer verbal information to text information effectively without losing character. It’d be beneficial to have LGBT Talk Columnists actively involved in the LGBT BDSM/Kink/Leather/Fetish communities.

Position reports to the LGBT Talk Editor and Chief Editor

Please submit a sample of your writing skills along with a brief outline of your experience for consideration to publisher@kink-e-zine.com

Goth/Kink dance clubs and parties, TNG events and workshops, clothing/fashion, music--basically you are the “IN person” of Kink-e-Zine; the one who knows what’s hot & what’s not in the San Francisco Bay Area scene and gives the reviews! This position requires great descriptive writing skills with special attention to grammar and minimal error, the ability to make deadlines and maintain contact with other Staff members, and in some instances, the ability to conduct live interviews and transfer verbal information to text information effectively without losing character. It’d be beneficial to have Style Columnists actively involved in the BDSM/Kink/Leather/Fetish communities, especially club venues.

2008 NorthWest Leather Celebration ~ May 16-18, 2008

Detailed Press Release for:

the 2008 NORTHWEST LEATHER CELEBRATION

WHAT: smOdyssey's first annual Leather tribe gathering and host of the third annual Northwest regional Master/slave contest

WHEN: May 16 - 18, 2008

WHERE: in the heart of Silicon Valley, CA (San Jose area)

website: www.northwestleathercelebration.com

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Leather,

On the weekend of May 16 - 18 smOdyssey, Inc. (a 501c7 not-for-profit org) will be producing a brand new event called "Northwest Leather Celebration" (NWLC). The primary venue for NWLC is a full-service luxury hotel in the San Jose area. Everyone is welcome at NWLC! We are hoping that this event will grow to provide a favorite annual gathering place for all the leather tribes.

This event will also be the new host of the annual Northwest Master/slave contest. This contest is open to all orientations and genders. Originally this contest was held at smOdyssey's annual September FolsomFringe event in San Jose, CA, but we heard and heeded our neighbors throughout the Leather community who asked that the contest date be moved to a date that would not conflict with the "high holy days" of San Francisco leather (SF Folsom Street Fair week).

It is our hope that in moving the date of this contest and creating a brand new event at which to host it, we will make it possible for a more diverse cross-section of our community to support the event by attending and participating in it.

The Northwest Leather Celebration event will feature a lot of nightlife! The Friday evening "Meet & Greet" will be at Renegades Leather Bar in San Jose, CA (approx. 5 miles from the host hotel). There will be play parties on both Friday and Saturday night at our local community dungeon, Edges (also approx 5 miles from the host hotel). In addition, the popular SouthBay women's bar, Club Savoy is less than 2 miles from the hotel hotel.

Saturday's activities will include educational seminars throughout the entire day, a catered step-down luncheon for the outgoing Northwest regional Master/slave titleholders, and of course the contest pageant and show early on Saturday evening! Sunday will feature a catered brunch and keynote speech by slave ziggy, International slave 2006.

The NWLC website is under construction, but new content is being added on a daily basis. Online registration opens soon, and admission will also be available at the door (but early birds get a $10 discount!) We hope to see as many kink community members in attendance at the event as possible so we are striving to keep costs low.

Sponsorships, advertising and other opportunities for active support are available. We welcome involvement from every group in any way they might be willing. Please help spread the word. Everyone's participation is encouraged because this event is for us all!

Warmest Regards,
Margaret Anderson aka Ms KitNboots
Executive Officer for smOdyssey's Northwest Leather Celebration
May 16 - 18, 2008
in the heart of Silicon Valley, CA (San Jose area)

4/12/08 - "Kinky Krafts II" Toymaking Workshop with Master Erik, SF Citadel

4/12/08 - "Kinky Krafts II" Toymaking Workshop
with Master Erik

Saturday, Apr. 12, 2008
SF Citadel; 1277 Mission Street
San Francisco 94103
www.sfcitadel.org

Start Time: 1:00 PM
Admission: $45

We've all been in this scenario before---toy shopping at the local leathers store, and finding ourselves either leaving empty-handed because of how expensive they are or spending hundreds of dollars for just one toy. While leaving, we say to ourselves, "if only I could make my own toys...."

...well, that time is NOW!

Join Master Erik for a special 4-hour workshop, where He will cover the basics to getting started on making your own floggers, crops, canes, and cat o'nine tails. You'll also learn about shopping for inexpensive materials, leather braiding, and knots commonly used in toy making.

Admission for the workshop includes an instructional worksheet to take home with you, and a pre-packaged kit with all the materials needed to make a functional, utilitarian leather flogger during the second part of the workshop.

* PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CROSS-POST THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IN OTHER GROUPS

BIO: Master Erik has been enjoying the BDSM lifestyle for almost 21 years, playing ,volunteering, and giving workshops in Europe, the Southeastern US, and the last 8 years in the SF Bay Area. He is a member of SF Citadel Volunteer Staff, Dungeon Monitors Association, and is Publisher of Kink-e-Zine online. His handmade "weapons of ass destruction" can be seen--and felt!--most weekends at SF Citadel play parties.

Next Steps - Publicity

Now that we're actually live, I think we need to do a few things to publicize the site:

1. Write up a short paragraph about the 'zine, which we can use as boilerplate to explain what Kink-E-Zine is.
2. Post this to Tribe, Yahoo groups, other organizations' e-zines, other national and regional 'zines, ad infinitum.
3. Create a business card with the Kink-E-Zine name and address, and a short catchy descriptive phrase.
4. Distribute the card to all staff members (for us to hand out), and to the real-world places we all hang out - the Citadel, bars, bookstores, clubs, cafes, store bulletin boards, etc.
5. Create a press release, and/or longer blurb, about the 'zine and what's upcoming, and distribute it widely.

The 'zine looks great, but we've had (at last check) 152 views, which ain't gonna cut it. We need to generate publicity to let people know the 'zine is here.

Master Erik Gets It Up . . . And It's Spectacular!

Okay, you know I can't resist a bad dirty pun. But really . . . it's awesome! thanks team for all your hard work. But an extra big thanks to our fearless leader for all his hard work. I know it got really really crazy towards the end and Erik had oh, one or two other little things on his mind with the fair coming up, and he did it! We got our zine! Yays!

Now . . . next month . . .

But seriously. I had one new article idea last night, and I'm just going to throw it out here because I'm still pretty sleep deprived and sun-baked and I don't want to forget it. The idea:

BDSM for Kinky Vegans

No, really. Goth Kitty Jen at Mr. S was telling me they get queries all the time, and there was a pretty active Tribe thread recently on BDSM Newbies. It seems sort of obvious, but if you were a nervous newbie vegan, I can see being really intimidated by oh, just the fact that our whole scene is called the Leather scene! Will you be welcome, will you be able to dress sexy, will there be toys for you? I think it could be a fun little resources article. And I already have my tagline . . .

"It is not just possible but easy to dress sexy and play nasty without harming any living creatures . . . except the ones that beg you for it!"

POSTED: Draft Writers' Guidelines

At Master Erik's request, I am posting the draft writers' guidelines for the Kink-e-Zine. Please note that this is a work in progress, and if you see anything that you feel could be improved, don't hesitate to drop me a PM. (We already have Rio reading it over for fussy editorial issues and Jay for legal, just FYI).

Since Tribe can't handle attachments or archived docs, here it is in one fell swoop. If you're a Kink-e-Zine writer or potential writer and would prefer this as a Word doc, drop me a PM with the e-mail at which you'd like to receive the attachment. Thanks, and looking forward to seeing those awesome articles start rolling in . . .

Kink-e-Zine Writers’ Guidelines

Welcome to the Kink-e-Zine Writers’ Guidelines. The purpose of this document is to help guide you through the process of writing for Kink-e-Zine, and make life easier for everyone—writers, editors, designers, and, of course, your eager readers.

We realize that some of our contributors are seasoned writers who’ve been widely published—and thus may be tempted to skim or skip this document. Please don’t! Every publication has its own individual quirks, and this is especially true of one dealing with a topic as potentially thorny as the fun, fabulous, and occasionally fraught world of BDSM. We’ve endeavored to keep these guidelines short, sweet, and to the point, so stay with us!

On the other end of the spectrum, we know that some folks may be writing their first pieces for publication with Kink-e-Zine. Our policy of inclusion, and of seeking out scene experts and interesting new voices means that we’re not just soliciting writing from established writers, but from anyone who has something to contribute to the scene. We’ve tried to strike the right balance in these guidelines, offering the support that less established writers will find helpful as well as the more technical information of use or interest to the pros. If you’re a new writer and feel confused by terminology, or wish for more clarification on any point, please speak up via e-mail or Tribe PM! This is a growing, changing document, and it won’t get better without your input. (insert contact info here)

Nuts & Bolts

As you’d guess from the heading, here are the basics of turning in a Kink-e-Zine article that will cause your editor to weep tears of joy.

Deadline

Be clear with your editor what your deadline is, and exactly what they’re expecting to receive on that day. Just your article? Article and photos? Sidebar? Resources? Cookies? (Hint: Cookies are always welcome.) We know that things come up and life gets in the way, so if you do suspect that you’re going to miss a deadline, it’s always best to let your editor know sooner rather than later so that he or she can do the necessary planning. The same goes for drastic changes in word count or focus. If, for instance, you were assigned a 1,500-word article but it turns out the subject just wasn’t that interesting and you’re going to turn in a 250-word piece, that’s probably fine. But drop your editor an e-mail so that he or she can be ready for this and can alert the layout folks to shift some things around. Similarly, if your artist profile has turned into more of an art review, with images, that’s probably cool, but (sing along here, you now this tune by now), let your editor know!

After you turn your article in, the assignment editor will give it a quick read, and shoot you back an e-mail either accepting it as is, or sending it back for rewrite. After acceptance, it goes to copyedit, where pour team of copyeditors will smooth out any spelling, grammar, and punctuation glitches. They may e-mail or call you if something’s not clear. (Is that really how Mr. Kryzwksykiy spells his name? Are you sure the art show is on October 28? That’s a Sunday, and the gallery’s site says they’re closed Sundays. Our lawyer says you can’t call this club owner a “no-good, sheep-fucking bastard.” I have changed it to “a very unpleasant man.” Is this okay? And so forth.) Finally, our tech wizards need to code it, lay it out, find art to match, and press the button to make sure everything goes live on time. So, you see, those deadlines are there for a reason!

Software

Ideally, you should write and submit your articles in MS Word. This will allow you to spell and grammar check, and do an accurate word count. If you don’t have Word, but have a compatible program, save as Word readable and it should be fine, although there’s a possibility that formatting such as bold and italic will drop out and need to be reinstated. In a worst-case scenario, if you have no compatible word-processing program, you can copy and paste your article into the body of an e-mail (or even compose it in e-mail), although this will almost certainly lose bold and ital formatting. Your editors will restore formatting as they envisage it, and will send you a link to the HTML-coded article for your final approval. Please do not do your own HTML coding, that’s what we have designers for!

Tone & Language

The tone of Kink-e-Zine is envisaged to be that of a hip, conversational, highly engaging, extremely readable magazine. What Nerve is for New York, or Time Out for London, we will make our publication for kinky San Francisco and its environs. Key elements of that level of success are:

•	Excellent, engaging writing of a high professional quality
•	Articles that are unexpected, educational without being pedantic or overly academic, provocative without being confrontational, and intimate without being inappropriately personal
•	Detailed, timely, accurate listings
•	Intriguing visuals
•	Deep resources that provide something of true value to the community
•	A mission of inclusiveness—drawing in and encouraging newbies while honoring the experience and tradition of the scene’s rich history.

Fact-Checking

Unlike those big New York publications, we don’t have hordes of nubile fact-checkers at our beck and call. We’re counting on you to get it right the first time! Please double-check all names (of people, businesses, and places), addresses, phone numbers, websites, etc. Our copyeditors will double-check where possible, but often you are the best or only expert, so be sure you get it right.

In general, be as specific and detailed as possible. Details paint the picture. Are there flowers in that sex worker’s yard, or are there multicolored petunias, wilting slightly in the hot noonday sun? Similarly, if you mention that something happens on Mission Street in between 6th and 7th streets, note which corner it’s closest to, and on which side of the street. Really help the reader picture what is going on.

Privacy

The next two sections address somewhat weighty legal matters. They are, in fact, too weighty to go into in enough depth to do them justice, but we did want to give them a tip of the hat, just so that writers are keeping them in mind as they work. We will have our attorney reading over every issue of Kink-e-Zine with an eye to any potential liability issues, but we’d like you to be aware as well. Sadly, these are litigious times, and it never hurts to know what kinks (in the non-good way) may rear their ugly heads.

The issue of privacy is, essentially, one of respect. If you quote someone in an article, be sure that they don’t mind your using their name in a BDSM-related publication and, if they do, be sure that you mask their identity sufficiently. Your source may ask you not to use her name, but if you quote her as “A striking red-haired woman with tattoos of snakes on both arms, who works at the Fell Street DMV,” her co-workers may well happen upon a copy of the publication, recognize her, and mock her mercilessly. Or worse. Be respectful of your scene, your sources, and your subjects, and make sure that you are protecting people who want to be protected.

When writing about events in the past, as in an article on leather history, issues of privacy are a bit more complex. If something is a matter of public record, you have little or no reason to be concerned. Major figures and events in leather history have been written about before and if, say, Jack Rinella were going to get annoyed about being outed, that ship done sailed. Let’s say, however, you’re writing about your introduction to the leather scene, and you write about an event you attended in the ‘60s where you met a guy named Chad. He’s not a famous person, just the chap who introduced you to the leather lifestyle. Is Chad “out”? Is he still alive? Does his family know about his lifestyle? Maybe it’s safer to change his name and identifying details for the story if you’re not sure on these points, especially since, after all, it’s your story and that’s the key point.

Libel & Defamation

Again, these topics are too complex to sum up easily in a few paragraphs, and our trusty legal eagle will be going over all text but there are a few small items to keep in mind to make his life easier (and we all want to do that, right?)

In law, “defamation” is a statement that makes a false claim that may harm the reputation of an individual, business, product, or group. “Libel” is the term generally used for defamation in its published form. (This for the nerds in the cheap seats.)

There’s an obvious and a slightly less obvious component here. The obvious component is . . . don’t dis people or places unnecessarily. If, for instance, you are doing a round-up review of local play venues, there’s no problem comparing and contrasting plusses and minuses. You start to cross the line with statements like, “Everyone knows Proprietor X is a sleaze who hits on women inappropriately,” or “If you play at Venue Y, be careful you don’t catch crabs from their skanky dungeon furniture.”

The less obvious component is related to the notion of privacy. Let’s say you snap a picture of someone at the Dyke March. This may well be taken to imply that she’s a lesbian. No big deal in San Francisco? Perhaps. But you never know what someone may take to be defamatory. Be sure that person knows she’s being associated with that article and is okay with it, and you’ve covered that off.

Fair Use

When quoting from an already published work, keep these few things in mind:

1.	Is it really necessary? A lot of new writers rely on others to make points that they could really make equally well or even better in their own words.

2.	If you really do need or want to quote from someone else, keep it short and sweet. Kink-e-Zine articles are 1,500 words at the longest, so you shouldn’t be quoting more than a few sentences from another work in your article.

3.	Quote exactly. You can use ellipses (…) to cut words out or brackets to insert necessary clarifying words like [and] or [the] but, in general, if it’s in quote marks, it should be exactly what was in the original published work. An example of how ellipses and brackets work is:

As Miller and Devon wrote in Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns, “Canes are heavy toys. . . .[which] deliver such a unique brand of hurt that some masochists fall in love with them.”

4.	Be sure to attribute fully—let your editor know what you’re quoting from, and who the author is.

Style Matters

Your copy team will clean up spelling, punctuation, and any grammatical issues, but you’ll earn our undying love by turning in copy that’s as clean as possible.

Please note that this style sheet is a work in process. Right now, it’s pretty skeletal. As we publish more issues, more and more terms and guidelines will be added. If you have suggestions (or thorny spelling, grammar, or style issues that have always plagued you), please pass them along. We’re here to help!

Style Resources

We basically follow the Chicago Manual for style issues. Chicago Online is subscribers only, so unless you have a subscription or a hard-copy version, don’t worry too much about this—you editors will tidy up your commas and semicolons. If you’re fascinated by this sort of thing (some of us are!), check out:

Overall Style

Use standard English, including standard capitalization of pronouns (his/her, he/she, etc.). Exception is in direct quotes, Op-Ed pieces, or letters to the editor, if writer uses non-standard capitalization.

Avoid nonstandard pronouns and spellings for transgender and other nonconventional roles (hiser, hym, womyn, etc.) Exception is in direct quotes, Op-Ed pieces, or letters to the editor, if writer uses non-standard spellings.
Writers' Guidelines & more

Hi friends and co-conspirators! Great to meet everyone this week. Just a heads up--I'm working on a set of writers' guidelines/style sheet this weekend, hope to circulate a first draft by Sunday. (This is my transparent self-motivating ploy. If I post it publicly, I can't slack off. Theoretically.) I figure I'll send a draft to Master Erik, obviously, as publisher, to make sure that I'm correctly refelcting his vision. Then, I'd like to send drafts to Jay and Rio. Rio as a copyeditor/author wrangler to see if she feels like they will get us the copy we want, and Jay as a writer who has no doubt received many set of writers' guidelines and can help fine-tune. (As a journalist myself, I've gotten a number of sets of guidelines, and am stealing liberally. One of my favorite professors in grad school used to say, steal form one person it's plagiarism. Steal from three, it's research.)

I would also like to suggest, for future staff meeting, that they be minuted, and minutes circulated. If we can't get someone to volunteer to do this for every meeting, perhaps duties could circulate? This is how it's been handled in other organizations I've been involved with. We agreed to quite a lot, and I think it would be handy if minutes were circulated reminding folks of what they'd committed to, and informing absent folks of what fun they missed. And it's just not fair to expect the meeting chair to also take notes, superhuman though he may be. My 2 cents . . .

That's all for now!

I'm sorry for such short notice on the Kink-e-Zine Staff Meeting--I was in a car accident last week, & haven't been in much condition to be online until this week. We need to have the active attendance & participation of EVERY Staff Member....some of you have expressed to be notified at least a week in advance, & I understand that perfectly....& wholeheartedly agree....

...so with that being said, WEDNESDAY'S KINK-E-ZINE STAFF MEETING HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO WEDNESDAY, 8/29, 8PM AT SF CITADEL.

Now, this rescheduling is being done with the understanding that We really need to get our collective thoughts & energies together to make this work, & prepare to get the first edition off the ground---& in order to make that happen, We need Everyone present.

See ya next Wednesday!

Conduct within these walls....

In the relatively short timeframe that I've held the position as Chief Publisher of the upcoming Kink-e-Zine, I've had a situation come to My immediate attention that I feel warrants clarification of the conduct necessary for not only functioning as a cohesive Staff, but functioning as a member of this Tribe.

I'm not into repeating the aforementioned incidents, because they in themselves have received MORE than their fair share of publicity, but instead I will make this comment, & this comment I will make only ONE TIME:

As a member of the Kink-e-Zine Staff & a member of the Kink-e-Zine Tribe, your conduct not only reflects everyone you'll be working with as Staff, but members of this Tribe as well & this community as a whole in the grander scheme of things. It's fine to have disagreements, & inner conflicts...but when they are allowed to rear their ugly heads & cause discord amongst everyone, they in turn become cancerous....& in My opinion, become conduct that I will not tolerate as a member of My Staff, nor My Tribe.

It is with this that I am formally announcing that the position of Research/Librarian previously held by Infodiva has been vacated under My orders. I hope this will be the first---& last time---I have to use such Executive authority in this manner.

....& now, it's time to make a decision & step forward! Here's how I have projected the Kink-e-Zine to be divided into its respective departments:

*Publisher - FILLED

*Chief Copyeditor/Proofreader - FILLED

*Informations Editor
Will oversee articles related to education, BDSM-related history, & toymaking, toy usage & techniques

*Style Editor
Will oversee articles related to fashion, music, and upcoming events

*Creative Editor
Will oversee Kink-e-Zine art layout/design, reviews/bios/information on local up & coming kink artists/photographers with featured work,
kink humor/comics, & funny news from around the world geared towards BDSM-related topics

*Medical/Legal Editor
Will oversee articles related to medical information & legal issues we should all be aware of in BDSM

FEATURED SEGMENTS

*"LGBT Talk"
News from & related to the LGBT kink community

*"True Colors"
News from & related to kinky people of color

*"Kink in the City - FILLED
A series article giving an inside look into the adventures (& misadventures) of a single girl in the kink community.

"Go on...Ask Me!" - FILLED
A "Dear Abby" / "Miss Manners" type section...Q&A, BDSM etiquette

"Pleasures"
Steamy erotica, & ask the "sexpert" section

Each department will need an Editor, who will be routed any & all related articles, as well as contribute his/her own works to be published. The featured segments positions will be self-contained....meaning that segment is all yours!

There are a few departments already accounted for---those persons, I thank you wholeheartedly! If you are interested in an Editor position for one of the departments, please email Me at master_eriks_realm@yahoo.com If you're interested in contributing literary work of ANY kind, then by all means, start sending them to My Tribe mailbox NOW!!!

Thanks...& as always, Be Well!

Hi all. Master Erik is going to take over this project, and tribe, with my blessing. I'm no longer interested in doing the zine, but I think it has great value and I wish Erik and everyone involved all the very best.

Thank you for your support and interest. I hope it turns out well.

And thanks to Erik for his continued interest, and his very respectful request to take on the project.

Hi Elliott,

Just stumbled across this Tribe from Citadel's... is this in the works? It sounds like a great idea, and I'm interested in a few things:

- possibly contributing as a writer (fantasy BDSM stuff, kinky poetry &/or lyrics)
- if you can do links or streaming, possibly contributing a song or two (on topic, of course)
- buying ad/promo space for the band
- Getting an online Review of our new CD

Thanks!

~ Pixie

help support sexual freedom!

Hello all you kinky people. My name is Elliotte, and I am part of a team that is raising money for the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF). On Dec. 17, the SF Citadel will be hosting a yummy dinner, sexy fun cabaret, and a raffle fundraiser - all to support the NCSF, which promotes sexual freedom for kinky and poly people.

We have already sent e-mails out to many local businesses, organizations, and craftspeople to ask for donations for the raffle and have gotten a very good response, but we can always use more items/services to raffle!

If you donate an item or service, we will put your business/organization (or just list you as a wonderful, amazing, generous person) in our evening program, as well as announcing it when the item is raffled off. So, do you want to offer a house cleaning? Do you want to buy a collar and donate it? Do you make floggers and would love to promote your craftwork while supporting a great cause? We would love to have your donations.

You will be able to mail the item to the SF Citadel or drop it off during any open event. We may be able to arrange pick-up. If you or your business/organization is interested in donating an item to support this very good cause, please e-mail me at <ElliotteNCSF@gmail.com>.

If you are a performer, and might be interested in donating your talents to our cabaret, please contact me. We also hope you will consider attending the event. More event and ticket information is below. Thank you!

Dinner will be a large buffet with a plethora of appetizers, entrees, desserts, wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages included. There will also be vegetarian options.

Entertainment includes DJs, male and female dancers, suspension artists, and energetic speakers.

We will be raffling off over $500 in outstanding items and services donated by our very own participating local organizations, craftspeople, and businesses.

Admission is $25. Tickets are sold at www.Frantix.net and may not be available at the door- buy yours early! $10 of each ticket will be donated directly to the NCSF.

So, I know this is a baby project still, but if you know of people who would like the Kink-e-Zine, please invite them into the tribe. The more the merrier. This is not just about my friends. :-) Although, hopefully some will want to help.

I am just starting to put together Kink-e-Zine, a web zine (and possibly a print version) about the SF kink scene. It's in the infant stages. I have a domain name, a web hosting, and now this tribe.

But I'm excited about the project, and gearing up to get going. Thanks for your interest, and I look forward to your input as a reader and/or contributor.
