I don't know what context you found this in but from my grandparents collection of old circus photos and other entertainment memorabilia I think that larger performers were often just as respected as smaller ones and this may not have originally been intended as a joke at all My grandmother in her prime was 6 foot one almost 400 pounds and did a brief stint with a circus as a giant
