Kitchen Myths, Hints & Soultions

moderated - created 01/09/10
Food myths are created from outdated science, old wives' tales, and a bit of wishful thinking. We've heard legends, plausible sounding false stories in the world of food preparation. Some amusing, some begun based on long-forgotten 'facts.' Sometimes we do things without really thinking them through, having hear or read somewhere that such&such was true.

(use the tribe search featur, it works!)

For example, for years, people thought you should remove the germ/sprout from a clove of garlic because it tends to be bitter. It's actually rather tasty, and all these years, folks have been throwing it away.

Do seeds turn tomato sauce bitter? Does cold water boil faster than hot? Does a warm lemon produce more juice than a cold one?

So, what kitchen.housekeeping myth have you seen perpetuated that you've since found to be completely off the mark?

(and PS: if you know some uncommon and neat tricks –as suggested in the great onion debate- please feel free to share them!)
