In this series, we will explore the beauty and subtleties of open-voice singing and ornamentation. We’ll go a step beyond the basics and sharpen our technique to create a fluid, supported and powerful sound. We’ll focus on individuals and small groups, and hone our choral ensemble skills such as singing in unison, harmonizing and blending. All this will take place in the context of haunting melodies and scrumptious harmonies from the Balkan Peninsula - Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. This class is geared toward experienced vocalists with previous exposure to Balkan-style singing. If this sounds like you, please join us!

Juliana Graffagna, Kitka’s Music Director, has been performing Eastern European folk and choral music since 1988. Over the years, she has had the honor of training with renowned vocalists Tatiana Sarbinska, Tzvetanka Varimezova, Kremena Stancheva, Donka Koleva, Merita Halili, Christos Govetas and Mariana Sadovska. Juliana has studied traditional song and dance at the East European Folklife Center’s Balkan Music and Dance Camps in Mendocino, CA for the past 6 summers and has taught at the Arcata Folk Music Festival, Balkanalia! and Kolo Dance Festival. She has led numerous Balkan and Slavic singing workshops for children and adults and has taught private lessons for the past 10 years. She has a B.A. in Russian Studies, and a background in classical piano and theatre arts. Juliana currently sings and plays tambura with Zabava!, a folkdance band specializing in the vibrant traditional music of Macedonia, Bulgaria and Greece.
