to get things happening, i thought i'd start by asking about your favorite klezmer groups/songs/etc. i'd be interested to hear your favorite bands, or if you are a musician, your main influences or favorite songs to play.

Goldene Chasene - origin of tune?

So, to make a long story short... Oh, why bother. If you don't care, skip to the question at the end.

So, as I was spending way too much time online this morning and browsing www.folkdancemusic.net, I came across notes for the original Andy Beatis choreography for the song Opa Cupa, by Serbian Rom hotshot Saban Bajramovic. Interestingly, the music attribution in the dance notes was not to the Saban Bajramovic version, but to a version by the French band Bratch.

As I browsed the web artifacts of the band Bratch (whom I would highly recommend to fans of both Gypsy and Klezmer music), I came across a track called, Les Noces, which was actually the tune Goldene Chasene played in a way that sounds much more Gypsy than Klezmer.

I had always assumed that Goldene Chasene was originally a Yiddish Theater tune - but this got me thinking, was it originally a Gypsy tune? Does anyone know its origin? The tune has long been a favorite of mine.
