Hello.
I have a couple of projects I'll be working on. Part of these requires drilling, so I have a Dremel tool set up as a drill press.
One project involves carving or incising images into White Tail Deer rosettes (the portion of the antler where it connectd to the skull. I'm wondering what tools could be used to carve the images into the rosette. Could standard wood carving chisels be used? Would an X-acto knife provide enough pressure to scribe the outline of what I am carving into the rosette?
What type of files would be recommended for other work?
Thank you
Adrian

Re: Tools for Carving Antler

Any rotary tool with small bits will work fine, I have whole selections of cheap rasp and diamond bits for Dremel, I do deer antler mostly, but have toyed with some tusk (hippo and warthog). Have enough bits (styles) to change as frequently as you deem needed, and dont drive them too hot. Chisels can be used but are more difficult to control as the rosette is small and hard to vise up. Good set of 'riffler' files wil give you all the detail needed (see gunsmithing suppliers to find them, or good tool supply warehouses) My last set of 20 years ago is still good see no resaon to ever get another (baring loss/break).
Work Well
