Just got back form the Okanagan and want to say I had an awesome time!
Saturday we danced to the drum rhythms of the wonderful and talented Adel Awad! First, I must say, we were so incredibly lucky to have the honour of Adel coming all the way out to Armstrong, BC! (And what a wonderful studio Linda provided!) Not only did he keep us dancers sweating (!), he helped us to feel the conversation between the rhythms and our bodies...between the drummer and the dancer. As the drum talked, we responded to its tone. Of course, that is what we dancers aspire to in performance- being an extension of the music/instrument- but it sure would be nice to have a live drummer all the time! (Can't compare "can" music!)
I have to say, aspiring drummers, if you get the chance to study with Adel, take it!! Adel is a fount of knowledge! He articulates the need to create dialog and a connection with the dancers very well. The importance of this cannot be overstated.
As Adel prepared to fly to Egypt the next day (oh, the envy!:), my ol' bellydance chums and I got the honour and pleasure to attend a Vernon workshop with Hindy! Ahhhhh.....she carried the essence of the great Dina and Raqia (and many others) in her smooth and delicious moves. And though no doubt any dancer would feel privileged to be compared to the great ones, I do not mean to take away from Hindy's own magic! She is a stunning dancer!!! Hindy is fun, graceful and incredibly talented and exudes all the juicy qualities of Egyptian dance that I love so much! Man, she knows her stuff! The icing is her lovely personality~ her openness, friendliness and charm.
If you are reading this Hindy, "We love you! Please come back again!"
Good news is that both of these artists might just be coming to the Kootenay area this summer! Keep your fingers crossed and keep your ears open for Nelson's own Bellydance Festival!!!!
Happy Dancing!

Re: Review of Adel and Hindy's workshops!
Tue, October 17, 2006 - 9:30 PMHi Sarita!
She IS fantastic! I am expecting some digital pics any time and I'll ask her if I can post them.
Here is an excerpt from her flyer:
"Hindy is a Canadian-born Lebanese dancer with over 20 years experience. She had a great start to her career when Lebanese actor Jamie Farr chose her at an audition from a line-up of belly dancers....She has performed in Hollywood, Las Vegas, the Caribbean, United Arab Emirates, and many other locations. Hindy stayed put in Calgary for years, building respect and a great reputation among belly dance colleagues as well as employers. She has also instilled a warm sense of respect and professionalism for each other in the dance community. Hindy is now traveling and teaching her workshops [and just] recently returned from a teaching engagement in Korea".
She now lives in Florida, but maintains contact with family in Canada and travels all over. She really does foster community with dancers, and is very humble! I also don't believe she promotes herself at all. But that's okay, because I can imagine she is wanted all over!
She also comes by her dance style honestly. She has worked with Dina and Raqia extensively and maintains a good relationship with them. Hell, she resembles a young Raqia in a very uncanny way!!! Wait till you see the pictures!
Anyhow, that's all I can tell you for now as it was my first time working with her. I believe Hadia knows her quite well.

Re: Review of Adel and Hindy's workshops!
Mon, October 23, 2006 - 1:12 PMWow..I can't wait for the pics! Thanks for the info. Sure wish that someone [MEDA?] would bring in someone like that to Vancouver. I tend to prefer learning from ethnic middle eastern bellydancers rather than N. American or Western European ones. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, its just a matter of personal taste and sensibilities. Of course not all are like Gamila Asfour, Denise Enan et el. Just because they're "ethnic" doesn't always mean that they can teach. But my experience has shown me that they do tend to have a 'flavour' in their dance which is missing in the rest. -
