Looks like I will not be back to the Kootenays for quite a while. In the meantime, I am hoping people start using this site more, for networking all dancers - teachers and students- as it was intended. I get at least 2 emails every month from interested students looking for lessons, and I do not know where to direct them anymore. I have been away too long! So please, teachers, if you can post your lessons, contact info and events here, that would be AWESOME! Then, interested parties can know, and so can I so that I can forward that info along.

In the meantime, hope everyone is having a beautiful summer!! Cairo is hot, as expected, and I am heading off the the Red Sea to cool my tootsies:) Keep well and keep in touch!

Greetings to all my friends, students and dance/music associates,

Yes, this is your moderator and yes it's been a long time. This last summer I was incredibly busy with a new business and then it was pack up and take off! I didn't seem to have time or energy to post anything and I, unfortunately, left all my emails on my hard drive in Canada (yes, including my Nile Rhythms e-newsletter member list). So, now I am hoping to update everyone and also hoping some of you will contact me with your emails and phone numbers.

I am living happily in Cairo now with my new husband, Hassan, and my daughter, Rowan, of course. I can tell you it's been a whirlwind of activity and only now am I able to take a breath and relax. Shortly after arriving, we moved to a new flat (anyone who has ever lived here knows this is a huge ordeal, as flats have to be overhauled and cleaned to make them livable by Western standards...unless one is very rich!) and a job followed shortly thereafter . I am teaching history to grade 7, 8 and 9 in one of the British international schools. Extremely high stress and, honestly, not a very supportive or organized atmosphere. It's a learning curve that I hope will conclude with a new level of patience and strength (the children have NO self discipline and classroom behaviour problems run rampant)!
My husband works a LOT and so time with each other is precious. My daughter has been coming to school with me though she is doing her schooling online. She's made a few friends and is finally feeling more comfortable about living here.

Cairo...the pollution is horrible. Worse than when I lived here 8 years ago. There is twice as much traffic (hard to imagine as there was hardly room to move on these roads before) and the noise is unbelievable. Cairo is noted for the honking horns, the blasting calls to prayer and the mobile phones ringing...now consider this with a population of over 26 million (some say). Yes, quite a change from the calm, beautiful, spacious, mountainous region of the Kootenays! But for some reason, I love it. But there has to be change. The attitude of many has gotten worse. For example, we get more hassled than before (being white folk...and women) and the economic stress Egyptians are facing has made life harder and people less patient. It feels like something must give, but I am not sure how that is going to happen.

As far as bellydance goes, I have had NO time to dance, or to go see dancers. I am hoping this will change now that I have a 1 month holiday (lucky me:). There are many teachers, of course, that I would like to study under and I am planning to get into contact with them soon. Ehab Gadalla is a fave teacher of mine and I am planing to track down Randa Kamal, Lucy and Dina (if I can afford them!:). But of course, being as famous as they are, its much easier and more affordable to take workshops from them in the West. Saying that, don't miss your chance when they come to Canada or the US!!! You will get the best of them there. Much more organized and accessible!

Well, as you might be able to tell, living in Cairo is full of ups and downs. Having an amazing and supportive husband makes it all worth it and, of course, glimpsing the Nile every morning on my way to work helps:) Living in the land of the Ancients is a dream, as always...a dream that is intensified by the challenges and sweeter for all the love I am given.

Yours truly,
Zahira

ObituariesVancouver (BC), Canada - Lache Cercel and the Roma Swing Ensemble informed about the passing of Adel Awad, who died Sunday May 7, in the morning, from cardiac arrest.

Adel was one of the pioneers of world music in Vancouver. Together with André Thibault, he created the “tapas circuit” in clubs and restaurants like Santos Tapas and the Latin Quarter. Those legendary evenings filled with music, dance, food, and unbridled joy, helped to make world music, and especially Arabic and Middle Eastern music, an integral part of the Vancouver scene.

Adel arrived in North America in the early 80's and built a reputation as a master percussionist in New York City, before moving to Vancouver. He collaborated with such diverse world music artists as Alpha Yaya Diallo, Celso Machado, Sal Ferreras, Pepe Danza, and Oscar Nieto and Rosario Ancer and the Jewish music quintet “Tzimmes”. He was an integral member of the Roma Swing Ensemble for several years.

Born in Cairo, Egypt, Adel grew up hearing the haunting calls to prayer and the percussion rhythms integral to the celebrations and ceremonies of Arabic culture. His father, who was also a musician and music programmer for Radio Cairo, encouraged Adel to start playing at an early age. By the time Adel was in high school he had earned a reputation as a fine percussionist. He graduated from the prestigious Higher Institute for Arabic Music in Cairo.

Adel was a master of the Egyptian darbuka (Arabic hand drum), riqq (tambourine) and duff ( a tambourine without cymbals) as well as Afro-Latin bongos, congas, and jembe. His unique style and dexterity in using each finger individually, gave him great rhythmic power and nuance.

In his professional lifetime, Adel championed world music in all its aspects and was a true cultural ambassador – one who bridged the gap between communities.

"But for us, Adel was more than a great artist. He was a musical and spiritual inspiration whose sheer presence brought joy to all who worked with him. He was a friend, a brother, a humanitarian, and despite severe health problems in recent years, he showered us with his kindness, his humor, and his indefatigable spirit. He will be sorely missed by the entire world music community," said Lache Cercel and the Roma Swing Ensemble.

Details of a memorial service and concert for Adel will be announced later this month.

Rest in Peace, Adel!

This is a brief follow-up to the Student Gala we had on Thursday. I want to thank everyone who supported the event, and the dancers who made the event what it was! I was truly amazed at the time and effort each dancer put into practice (and costume) for his or her performance…it showed! And how courageous each dancer was! It’s not easy putting yourself out there, being vulnerable to an audience and others’ opinions. But this was the perfect space to make that jump. What a great atmosphere and supportive crowd! And you have to know, I get so overjoyed, so emotional, when I watch my students dance! I can see the progress each one has made and enjoy seeing the uniqueness and individuality of each dancer. And everyone was so enjoyable to watch!!! Including our tribal dancing guests! What beautiful moves and synchronicity! The Kootenay Hip Notics definitely added drama depth to a wonderful evening. And I can’t forget our inspirational drummers! Kris, Cody and Johnny did a fab job keeping the crowd shimmying and adding authentic flavour to the event!

My own performance? Well, if you were there you got to see my comedy act:) All I can say is that I’ll never wear that slippery velvet skirt again- that is, unless it, and the belt, are stapled to my butt! LOL!

Just got back form the Okanagan and want to say I had an awesome time!

Saturday we danced to the drum rhythms of the wonderful and talented Adel Awad! First, I must say, we were so incredibly lucky to have the honour of Adel coming all the way out to Armstrong, BC! (And what a wonderful studio Linda provided!) Not only did he keep us dancers sweating (!), he helped us to feel the conversation between the rhythms and our bodies...between the drummer and the dancer. As the drum talked, we responded to its tone. Of course, that is what we dancers aspire to in performance- being an extension of the music/instrument- but it sure would be nice to have a live drummer all the time! (Can't compare "can" music!)
I have to say, aspiring drummers, if you get the chance to study with Adel, take it!! Adel is a fount of knowledge! He articulates the need to create dialog and a connection with the dancers very well. The importance of this cannot be overstated.

As Adel prepared to fly to Egypt the next day (oh, the envy!:), my ol' bellydance chums and I got the honour and pleasure to attend a Vernon workshop with Hindy! Ahhhhh.....she carried the essence of the great Dina and Raqia (and many others) in her smooth and delicious moves. And though no doubt any dancer would feel privileged to be compared to the great ones, I do not mean to take away from Hindy's own magic! She is a stunning dancer!!! Hindy is fun, graceful and incredibly talented and exudes all the juicy qualities of Egyptian dance that I love so much! Man, she knows her stuff! The icing is her lovely personality~ her openness, friendliness and charm.
If you are reading this Hindy, "We love you! Please come back again!"

Good news is that both of these artists might just be coming to the Kootenay area this summer! Keep your fingers crossed and keep your ears open for Nelson's own Bellydance Festival!!!!

Happy Dancing!

The last few classes especially have been challenging, learning moves I haven't done before in classes I've taken in the past. I'm looking forward to the next session already.

Weddings, birthday, staff parties and festivals. Celebrations are a great place to have bellydancers perform! Bellydancers instill a sense of vibrance, joy and mysitique into the atmosphere and certainly astound and delite guests!

Here you will be able to find a dancer(s) of your choice, depending on availability and venue. Stags and bars are generally avoided as we respect this dance as a sensual artform and not a scene for gratuitous lasciviousness.

Fees may vary, but will surely be fare. Keep in mind that hiring an inexperienced dancer for $25 is likely to take away from the quality of performance and in turn will propogate a dim and narrow perspective of this art. Alternately, paying appropriate fees honours the performance and the time and money spent for a dancer to reach her/his potential.

Please keep in mind, this tribe is not an organization responsible for performances of its members, but a network to help you find what you need.
