connection maybe?

“universitas magistrorum et scholarium” - in the academic definition. a “community of masters and scholars.” now, the word master in this context is one who is highly proficient and skilled with scholarly work. and, what does scholar mean? “Of a school.” So we have a general definition that we basically already understand.

A place where individuals learn to be masters of the intellect. Where our minds are taught to be highly proficient. Ask yourself this: Does a “university” assist in teaching us how to cultivate self-reliance, autonomy, not only good reason but an overall dynamic and intelligent mind? Intelligence has various definitions, lines and stages. A good school then, would attempt to cultivate multiple forms of intelligence. To develop scholars, masters across many different kinds – all kinds of intelligence. Universal intelligence. Hence, a university.

Now, ask yourself this one more time: Is your school a university?

The latest research on stress shows that short term stress is actually good for your immune system. I guess that confirms the old saying, "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger". Conflict can help you clarify your values, to stand up for what you believe in. Stress can be energizing, can help you accomplish what you need to in the world...but how much stress? how much conflict? Long-term stress is what makes us sick. So how do you know when to put on the brakes, to stop saying "yes" to extraneous commitments, to stop engaging in unnecessary conflict?

These aren't new questions, they have been asked for centuries. As the end of 2007 approaches, you may be taking stock, looking at what has transpired and what is to come, defining new samkalpas (resolutions) and perspectives, and reflecting on the meaning of inner and outer peace.

I for myself will be going to a nice retreat, enjoy good company and encourage inner and outer spiritual growth, healing and peace.

The mayans calculatd that it as the end of time and a beginning of a new age.

it's a thought I gotta write about more.

on previous expansions due to magnetics the universe collapsed and had to repeat the cycle of evolving to beings. celestial bodies that exceeded their gravitational maximum. perhaps the sum of expansions resides in the cultural diversity we see here on earth and what would happen if the earths movement/orbit stopped and the remainder of celestial bodies orbited in a magnetic balance that would physically change the state of the properties of magnetics. a balance of repelled and gravitational pull would create a new cosmos.

but in order for it to be mathematically correct their must be 2 "G" spots where one is stationary the other the magnetic counter weighted that affects movement by it's opposition. or perhaps its a bunch of parallel universes that need the same dynamic.

scientists are into the combination of string theory and parallel universe theory...I love thinking outside the box.

if the sun orbited the earth I am thinking we would continue to spin and perhaps the axis would stay relatively the same with the other celestial bodies involved. of course there are a slew of mathematical holes.

and theoretical holes.

the cycle of day/night would occur as the sun passes around earth instead of us it.
an example is kinda simple....the moon orbits the earth...due to it's proximity to out magnetic field...what if size and distance did not matter and location did.

On the other side of Light, the Abyss. On the other side of Love, the Abyss. How long, I cannot say.

I once was a rock, I remember that, and push pull crash, I remember that. I roamed the universe of myself in slumbering abandon, and truth be told, it was humorous, always.

I once was a plant, then an animal, and thirst and hunger, I remember that. I ran toward, and ran away from, the forms of my own lust. I wandered driven, starving, dying. But truth be told, it was humorous, always.

I once awoke as human beings, and entered into the school of my own becoming. I first worshiped myself in the form of my other, I worshiped my slumbering self. I moved toward my own skin, dear nature, and I approached me with wonder, now with terror, and did unending trembling and ritual pleading to deal with the terror I induced by my own sleep. But truth be told, it was humorous, always.

I once awoke as human beings in search of me as heavenly other, in my own form as misty mythic mystery, still asleep, but barely. I sacrificed aspects of my still slumbering self in order to appease the terror that my own twilight still evoked. But to awaken all at once, you see, would have ended the game right there. And truth be told, it was humorous, always, even as I cut into myself.

I soon awoke as human beings who, in striving to be a light unto themselves, were dimly on the trail of the Light that I am, even in my otherness. In one great move I stopped looking for me out there. In on great move, I awoke to a consciousness of light. In one great move, I turned within, or began to, and I could sense that this game was getting old, because I was now on the trail of I. Truth be told, it was humorous, even as it was starting to end.

And then one day, sitting alone as my otherness, I saw myself as a ball of Light and Love, and knew the Great Awakening was upon me.

IN the next move in the school of myself, I entered into Me, as that Love and Light itself, and I was with I to infinity. And this is I recognized altogether, in a whisper of breath that embraced all space, and a flash of Light that contained all time.

And then, the Abyss beyond all beyonds. Some would call it radical Freedom, infinite Release, ultimate Liberation, the great Redemption, boundless Being. I wouldn't know, for there is no I to know, in any form, sacred or profane, and so there is only this radical Formlessness, which remains is own remark. It is not bliss, it is not God, it is not love. It is not holistic, it is not Goddess, it is not interwoven anything. It is not infinite, it is not eternal, it is not any conception or object or state whatsoever. I-I am not light, am not love, am not spirit, am not bliss. I-I am not bound, am not free, am not ignorant, am not liberated.

But this much can be said: Where there is not this Emptiness, there is only suffering.

All this i remember, in the school of myself. All this I have seen, in the history of my own discovery. All this I sing of now, to the audience of myself. All this I promise to others, who are the forms of my own slumbering. All this others will also see, as they awaken from their otherness and return their slumbering selves to the Awake-ness that has always existed, undiminished and untorn, in the heart of what they are.

Exactly how long I was Light, I cannot say. How long Form existed, I cannot say. How long I have been neither, I cannot say.

On the other side of Light, the Abyss. On the other side of Love, the Abyss. How long, I cannot say.

But I know I will empty even this Emptiness, and therefore create a Kosmos, and therefore incarnate as the world of Form, and enter with Wakefulness the children of my own awareness."
And we had it all. Upstairs in the student hall at least a hundred fliers, with a dozen different things to do. The world was at our fingertips, right there in our classrooms, and it was in very bad shape they'd tell us, very bad shape.

You could travel to Africa with foreign aid projects, discuss gender and race with the sensitivity club, and taste fine exotic foods in MultiCulture club. And this was all very progressive, so they would tell us. I had begun to have my doubts.

We sit in classrooms and discuss the same theme: Oppressive, hungry, needing world. Woe to you and we, the more fortunate, should extend our efforts. Sensitivity. Awareness. Effort. Assistance. The students are rallied up, in a very subtle way, to help. Yet I noticed, as each took their turn discussing one strife or another, that there was a level of enjoyment in it! Yes, hidden there, in the words of liberty, sensitivity, multiculture, there was an escape. Dare I say, it? No, I needn't, shouldn't. The escape was simple: If we all could immerse ourselves in these ideas, this diversity, we would be safe, we could make a meaning out of our lives and wish the demons away. These students were not actively wishing anything but their own security. The ultimate narcissism, it seems for us here in school, is through ideals. And this, if I were to say it aloud, would have them at me like a pack of wolves, who had just forgotten they were supposed to be angels.

What is the nature and structure of you, apart from the biological factor? That is very closely related to what is beauty. When you look at a mountain, snowcapped, deep valleys, blue, deep hills, what do you feel, what's your real response to all that? Aren't you, for a second or for a few minutes, absolutely shocked by it, by the greatness, the immensity of the green valley, the extraordinary light and the blue sky against the snowclad mountains? What happens to you at that moment when you look at that - the grandeur, the majesty of those mountains? What do you feel? Do you, for the moment, or for a few minutes, exist at all? You understand my question?

Please don't agree; look at it very closely. At that moment when you look at something grand, immense, majestic, for a second you don't exist - you've forgotten your worries, your wife and your children, your job, all the messiness of your life. At that moment you are stunned by it. For that second, the grandeur has wiped out all your memory, just for a second, and then you come back. What happens during that second when you are not there?

That is beauty - you understand? - when you are not there. "

Aside: Why is that? the more limited a view is, the greater its pain, and the more inevitable its suffering. the bigger a perspective is, the greater its capacity for pain and the less likely it is to suffer from it. the personality can't seem to get this twist: it's what we EX-clude that creates suffering. the self is always trying to keep out what hurts. so it perpeuates and compounds its own suffering. if it were to radically IN-clude everything it would cease to suffer. it would hurt like hell, but it wouldn't suffer.

if i ask you what do you remember? don't we need to establish who you are? am i asking You the personality? You, the Essential Self? You, the GOD-FALL that dumps a Trillion gallons of ~?~¿~?~ into each quark every nano second of reality?

i'll tell you right now i don't like the word memory. no offence Memory, but to my mind nouns evoke a stasis that lulls discrete entities into a blase' apathy. oh, there's fixed *things* now? whew... we can all relax. the Universe is no longer threatening me with its Infinite Dynamism.

what is a noun but an incapacitated (assassinated) verb? are we in full understanding of the debilitating nature of such assumptions? do we really want to forfeit Reality every single fucking second of our lives in order to accommodate a lazy streak in the psyche? if there is a conspiracy afoot, its our small identity and its poisonous addiction to forming arbitrary divisions (fancy) and then defending them as the pillars of 'the known' (folly). One day while pondering by a fire on a brisk fall night, a chill came over him and at that moment he made a discovery that would change the world. With this knowledge, Imis wanted to scream it from the highest mountain. He road horse-back three days to the capital city and rush to the circle. Once there he proclaimed to all with ears. "Listen all! Its over, I've seen a better way. We are amongst so much greater than the barriers that are set before you. Overcome! And feel the love once driven by simplicity, love the water again, love the air, love the scent of the seasons!" His face was filled with joy, only breifly, for the faces of a hundred blank stares crushed his spirit. "Surely if I, a middle-class postman, can see this, you all can too." No one answered his desperate call. He left the city humiliated and carried on with his duties. Three days later as the fire was simmering down he stood next to his horse and said, "then it is not almost over... when the time is near more will understand this truth."
Dedicated to the memory of her late husband John Lennon on what would have been his 67th birthday, the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will shine as a beacon for World Peace.

Sponsored by the City of Reykjavik, the Reykjavik Art Museum and Reykjavik Energy, the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will be surrounded by more than 495,000 PEACE WISHES from people worldwide that the artist has collected since 1981 as part of her interactive Wish Tree exhibits.
The wishes will be stored in capsules and buried surrounding the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER.

Yoko Ono invites you to join her and thousands of others by sending your PEACE WISHES to the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER for October 9th.

I hope the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will give light to the strong wishes of World Peace from all corners of the planet and give encouragement, inspiration and a sense of solidarity in a world now filled with fear and confusion.
Let us come together to realize a peaceful world.

Yoko Ono

The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is a work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon.

It is dedicated to peace and bears the inscription 'IMAGINE PEACE' in 24 languages.

Its construction and installation is a collaboration between Yoko Ono, the City of Reykjavik, Reykjavik Art Museum and Reykjavik Energy.

The work is in the form of a wishing well from which a very strong and tall tower of light emerges. The strength, intensity and brilliance of the light tower continually changes as the particles in the air fluctuate with the prevailing weather and atmospheric conditions unique to Iceland.

Every year it will light up between October 9th (Lennon's birthday) and December 8th (the day of his death).

In addition the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER will be lit on New Year's Eve, during the first week of spring and on some rare special occasions agreed between the City and Ono.

The electricity for the light comes entirely from the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant.
rest your legs a while and sit beside me.
the fire is dim but the warmth may reach you yet.
let me tell you of lives past,
of rivers lost and won,
of treasures that shift from gold to mud,
depending on the age?
we've reached another corner now,
do you see it clearly, or is it hazey?
the tea rises in steam and clears
your weary mind.
quiet, reposed,
you are open,
and listen passively.
do you see the steam dissipate in curls and streams?
going up and out into nothing?
so too can be said for our lives,
in ways we do not see,
busy twirling and curling about the air
no, more!
the sun knows this story too.

ah, so you remain,
so i shall tell.

before you were you,
you were everything.
before you were everything,
you were nothing,
and none of these things end at any point.

they curve, curve like the steam of your tea.
like the rivers outside.
like the thoughts in your mind.

nothing more, nothing more.

let us enjoy the night,
dance in the sunrise,
sing in mid-day,
whisper in the evening,
there is nothing more to say,
and no wisdom could ever usher more or less
than the rustle of cherry trees.

traveler,
you may tell me you are weary,
you are clouded in a fog,
and the steam is all but elusive.

traveler,
you may say that you are angry,
you are clouded in a fear,
and the mindfulness is all but hidden.

traveler,
i tell you only one thing,
who is it that knows the fog?
who is it that knows the hidden?
who is it that knows the unknown?
are you not already aware of these things?
are these things not unlike steam themselves?
why do you hasten your worry?
is that not the true hiding?
from yourself?
you already are, and that is effortless.

you have come into being so very naturally,
remain a while,
sip your tea,
sing and cry,
smile and be of joy,
there is nothing,
just watch the steam rise.

Realizing the evil that exsist in the world and coming to find ones self, and admit ones own faults can be a mentally painful time. For example, you might begin intuiting a deep inward sense of freedom, lightness, release. This source, this center of the cyclien,w ill retain its lucid stillness even amid the raging winds of anxiety and suffering that might swirl around its center. The discovery of this witnessing center is very much like diving from the calamitous waves on the surface oa f stormy ocean to the quiet and secure depths of the bottom. At first you might not get more than a few feet beneath the agitated waves of emotion, but with persistence you may gain the ability to dive fathoms into the quiet depths of your soul, and lying outstretched at the bottom, gaze up in alerted but detached fashion at the turmoil on the surface."

"I was thinking about the Carmelites' emphasis on passion and the Buddhist's parallel emphasis on equanimity. This somehow seemed more important to me than the age-old argument about theism versus nontheism that these two groups usually engage in, and which seems beside the point to me. It suddenly ocurred to me that our nomral understanding of what passion means is loaded with the idea of clinging, of wanting something or someone, of fearing losing them, of possessiveness. What if you had passion without all that stuff, passion without attachment, passion clean and pure? What would that be like, what would that mean? I thought of those wonderful moments in meditation when I've felt my heart open, a painfully wonderful sensation, a passionate feeling but without clinging to any content or person or thing. And the two words suddenly coupled in my mind and made a whole. Passionate equanimity, passionate equanimity- to be fully passionate about all aspects of life, about one's relationship with spirit, to care to the depths of one's being but with no trace of clinging or holding, that's what the phrase has come to mean to me. It feels full, rounded, complete, and challenging.

This feels right to me, very deep to me, very central to what I have been working on for many years, going back to the name change. It's like the first part of my life was learning passion. The life after cancer, equanimity. And now bringing them together. This feels so important! And it seems slowly but surely to be permeating all aspects of my life. I still have a ways to go! But it feels like I can finally see the road clearly, on that "journey without goal."

And as for the task before me, it means to work passionately for life, without attachment to results. Passionate equanimity, passionate equanimity. So appropriate!'

Emphasize Neither Opinion,
Because both are wrong and both are right.
How else could we move but to
Sway with the eastern or western
winds?

Both hemispheres must be cultivated, whatever happened to a duality on its healthy way to union? Across the U.S., education has been consistently falling apart. As averages drop, the tuition raises, and schoolboards crack down with tougher systems. Yet, all of these attempts appear to be futile. Why is it that the children continue to fall away like dandelions? From an observational point of view, and not of opinion, what the west lacks in creative thinking and right-brained activities it compensates with left-brained, analytical thinking. No emphasis on the artistic side, it seeks to create cookie-cutter students, who vary only in competence and clever ideas to problem solving. This is what we teach our children to value. To have clever minds and conditioned ones, to be walking libraries, speaking, breathing desktops that can re-arrange the database to produce some sense of individuality. Are we mere collections of memory?

Or, can we as Jiddu Krishnamurti suggested, practice, "learning without accumulation?" Is there such a thing as dynamic learning? Where both left and right hemispheres of our brain are used efficiently, one without dominating the other? Surely such narrow-minded systems fail because of precisely that; the inability to appreciate the scope of human potential. The mind has again and again, time and tested, shown that we can be more than an empty trunk to fill with traditional education. We are dynamic beings. Perhaps the burden of school seems so challenging to many of the 'fringe' types, those who consider themselves indigos or simply those who feel they do not belong, is the burden of conditioning, not just 'challenging courses.' The system is limited to what the system-maker knows, and if the creators had a narrow view in mind, a narrow result they have received.

So what alternatives are there? Some argue that this is the best we've got, and so what else do we have to show for it? The answer isn't always obvious. The alternatives are hardly dabbled in universities, and so it would require you to dig a little further. Upon further investigation, you may be flooded with a variety of options. From shamanism and tribal/natural learning, to Zen, consciousness, alternative colleges and masters programs, you'll be digging through a motherload right beneath a tranquil but misleading bliss of university studies.

"Learning without accumulation," what would this imply? To learn without that extraordinary burden of conditioning on your shoulders? To truly know, and not merely have knowledge of? To have such intuitive understanding, of course, you'd dabble perhaps into eastern philosophy. What is the nature of the mind, and is the west somehow mistaken in its approach? Yes and no. Fragments, you'll find. Pieces fo the puzzle. In the east, Buddhists teach that the mind is in fact insubstantial. Rather, it is more like a collection of memories, emotions and ideas. Your likes, dislikes, past and subconscious flutter in and out of existence. The "you" now is not the "you" ten years from now, yet you still have this sense of "I-ness." Weird, no? Through various meditations, the practitioner slowly learns to penetrate the true identity; that you are not your 'self' at all. A jumble of memories, emotions and thoughts, buzzing like a whirlwind, never the same. You simply witness all of the aspects of this "self" without judging. Gradually you discover that the "I" nature, that constant observing that does not change, is like the eye of a storm, this whirldwind you once called self. You lose identity with that jumble of a personality, being to learn that there is more to you than a collection of memories and thoughts and feelings, you are also this witness.

A strange notion it is; to realize that "I" am just an observer, a Witness, the I-ness that is neither happy nor sad, but observes both. Slowly, surely, we begin to move out of ourselves, and it is in this realm that true "knowing" can being.

Western education observes the self as a concrete object, the witness has lost its identity, and become intangled in a mess of ideas, of emotions, of feeling. Trapped in the body-mind, the west sees itself as the rational-thinking creature chained within a flesh-suit. Consciousness embedded in the beast. A case of mistaken identity!

So to learn without accumulating would have something to do with this transpersonal nature, and to discover this you would just have to begin the journey yourself, to your "Self", from your "self", lowercase. More to come . . .

Greetings,

I’d like to first welcome all of you. By joining this community, you have decided to do something; whether it is an act personal or worldly. We founded this place with a dual-purpose. It is as much a learning center for us as individuals as it is a place for us to take what we’ve learned and manifest it in our world. Society has made leaps and strides over the last century, and has overcome incredible feats since the first fire was lit, both literally and metaphorically (the fire of imagination, insight, creativity). This is a reality we are quick to acknowledge and boast about. We must not forget, however, that as far as we have come, we have also suffered tremendously. Revolution after revolution, system after system has attempted to correct humanity’s horrific shortcomings, yet war after war bleeds our young and terrifies the rest of us. Nation still boasts against nation, and within the nation therein lacks a particular agent of imagination, of creativity, of healthy humanism that is necessary for a civilization to continue growing. We are at somewhat of a stalemate. While our technology soars and fathomless information is at our fingertips, it seems our spirit (soul or whatever else you wish to call it) continues to slip into oblivion.

So many of us are frightened. We search for security, for escapes, for a way out of the whole mess. Yet, there are some of us who are beginning to say: Hey, out of all these different ‘solutions’, there are patterns emerging. Maybe our perspectives aren’t so different, and maybe, just maybe, if we begin to put them side by side, we can learn to appreciate them as pieces to the puzzle. This puzzle is an ever developing mosaic. Slowly, surely, we will be able to see the bigger picture. If only we could sit down with each other and listen, truly listen. This may sound sentimental, but I’m not speaking of any such feelings, whether they are nice or not. Often enough we are too filled with our own baggage to listen to another’s story, and see through another’s eyes. So I ask each of you to leave your baggage at the door as best you can. This is a learning experience. We’re going to learn to listen, and I hope that we can take that understanding and begin to initiate change – small it may be, but the forest must be planted with tiny seeds. It’s a call for us as human beings to actualize ourselves.

So I ask you. Why not be creative? Why not dance in the flame of imagination, leave your baggage at the door and come in with an open mind, heart, spirit. It’s time to play, to learn, to know.

What will we be doing, you ask? You name it! There is a hope here, and it looks to the future not so much as an ideal, but as an actualization of potential that is already within us. We have the capability to grow and expand, and we do so every day. This little forum and the newsletter to follow I hope can be an outlet for that expansion. Expect to see writing, art, poetry, treatises, philosophy, politics, science. No subject is taboo. No ground is forbidden. We can explore the cutting edge of thought, of culture, of consciousness, and push ourselves right to the edges of our limitations – and then beyond. After all, those limits are self-imposed, and inevitably will crumble for new heights. What was once a mountain is but a speck beneath your wings, what was once the sky is but a beautiful spark in the cosmos, bother inner and outer.
