Re: Shower Solution?
Wed, July 26, 2006 - 7:46 PMborrowed from disorient:
platform: platform could just be 2-4 standard wooden pallets. not too heavy, easy to find. rather than sand them down (to avoid splinters), we could then put some sort of hard flat plastic on top, like the thing you might use under a rolling desk chair. the plastic surface area would be slightly smaller than the pallets, so that water can run off the plastic but through the pallet holes into the base. obviously we'd have to make sure the plastic is not too slippery when wet!
stalls: we should be able to use the pvc pipes from last year to create the same basic frame, then drape the existing black plastic mesh around to create stalls and a little bit of privacy.
base: a few 2x4s with cross beams should make a sturdy enough base. doesn't need to be nearly as heavy as the previous ones. should be at least a foot high (so that it's kinda like a stage ) and for the...
filter: hang a mesh sheet within the base, just under the platform. this will catch hair, larger dirt clumps, and other nastiness that we don't really want in the evap pool, which will make the evap pool more effective.
evap pool: hang the black plastic underneath the filter so it slopes downwards towards the evap pool. continue to gently slope the plastic at least halfway across the pool, so that water continues to run down towards the other end.
wicks: stake rebar or other small uprights along both sides of the pool and string twine or something across from which we can hang strips of burlap or other wicking material. kinda like rows of flypaper. these would hang into the pool and "wick" the water upwards creating more surface area for evaporation. they don't have to be very high and can start a ways off from the platform so as not to be an eyesore to bathers! though i actually think they could be done quite artfully...
mop: bring a long soft mop to push around any puddles that gather and aren't evaporating. also helps keep the black plastic clean, which helps evap more. -

Re: Shower Solution?
Wed, August 2, 2006 - 4:17 PMthe tank that the SC used cost about $200, drop off and removal. if they pumped it there was a $60 fee per pump (huh huh huh...) BUT we never excersized that option. one year we almost filled it. last year we got close. that was for a camp of about 50+ with a dozen and half tweaking hard all week. (ie, they showered A LOT!)

Wed, August 2, 2006 - 4:13 PMyeah, trail. you were supposed to be on that.
jonny on the spot. call 'em.
evaporation ponds dont not work. (NO, they don't!) grey water tanks do.
If we're crafty, we can work the shower and communal sink to drain into the tank.
