How to start in Kyudo?

topic posted Thu, June 8, 2006 - 2:57 PM by  Unsubscribed
Hi,
I've been interested in Kyudo for a little while, but still can't get started. The equipment alone is not that easy to obtain. Instruction is another matter. Any suggestions? Any sources of equipment that have bearable prices-I am aware of Asahi USA.
Is that possible to study it by your self?
Thanks

One of the problems with Kyudo is the steep initial price of equipment. I say initial, because if you take care of the equipment, it can last you for 20-30 years or more. Which is far cheaper than say, skiing or mountain biking.

To try it out before you invest is a good idea (since we're talking about around a $800- $1000 investment ). So your best bet is to find a dojo. Usually they have class equipment you can use during the class. Then, as you go, you gradually buy what you need.

In the bay area, there's a couple dojos that I know of, San Fran & Berkeley (not sure if the latter is still functioning... get ahold of Lucy Halverson : email kyudoka@juno.com or call 415-681-1185 . They practice at a church in Japantown.

Can you study it by yourself? I wouldn't recommend it at all. You'll just end up developing some hard-to-erase bad habits if not destroying your equipment with wrong technique.

    Good luck!

Thank you for your reply. Still ansewerd my question on sources for equipment. I guess there are not that many options. Where you get your equipment from?

I get my equipment from the head teacher at the Boulder, CO dojo of Zenko Int'l, whose name is Don Symanski. He is (as far as I know) the only maker of yumi (kyudo bows) in the US. I think he charges about $450 for a basic one. Much nicer than a fiberglass yumi.

Other stuff, kake, ya, gi, hakama I get from him too, but he orders it from Japan.
If you practice at the SF dojo with Lucy, she can put you in touch with him if you feel drawn to buy equipment. I would (and did) start with buying a kake (glove) first.
