Hey everybody,

I'm involved with a performance happening downtown on July 9th but, a couple people who originally said they were going to be part of the project are now not able to participate. So, I'm looking to replace them if I can. It's going to be very weird, wacky, and fun. Email me for full d-tails.

Cheers!

Hey,

Have you ever been naked? Want to do it again? That's great. Here are the details:

I need one, maybe 2 persons to pose for nude photographs. These images will be used for a few sculptural pieces. No experience necessary. I'm looking for males and females any size, age, color, shape, etc. The photo session will happen in my downtown LA art space either on a weekend or on a week night. I'm not paying the big bucks for this as I am not rich. But, I will give small compensation which is negotiable.

Go to my site to see my artwork. There are a few pieces there in the gallery that are similar to what I'll be doing. www.treiops.com/art

Are You Product People? This Saturday!

Hey there everybody,

This Saturday I hope you can come down to the Hive Gallery and see my sidewalk installation. This installation is new territory for me and I'm excited to see how it plays out. So, come by and say hello. This is part of the Hive's usual excellent monthly group show. December's theme is "Price...Less" - works for $200 or less. It includes featured artists Naomi Nowak & Carol Powell. Here's the details:

ARE YOU PRODUCT PEOPLE?
A Mixed Media installation by Treiops Treyfid

Opening reception: Saturday, December 6th, 2008
8pm – Midnight (Also installed for downtown Art Walk Thursday, December 11th 6pm to 9pm)
Sidewalk Installation at The Hive Gallery
729 S. Spring St. Los Angeles, CA 90014
http://www.thehivegallery.com
213-955-9051

From the press release:

Stark and contorted figures haunt a downtown Los Angeles sidewalk. Imprisoned by piles of product catalogs from famous retailers and fabricated from the detritus of our consumer culture they confront the audience. Amidst this spectacle we are awakened temporarily from our stupor and reminded that we are the targets of the relentless sales campaigns that saturate our environment via billboards, television and the Internet. Are you and others addicted to conspicuous consumption? Are you tired of the resultant loneliness and desolation that our consumer culture fosters? Are You Product People?

Hey,

Have you ever been naked? Want to do it again? That's great. Here are the details:

I need about 5 people to pose for nude photographs. These images will be used for a contemporary art installation piece in downtown LA at the end of the year. No experience necessary. I'm looking for males and females any size, age, color, shape, etc. The photo session will happen in my downtown LA art space probably on a weekend but maybe on a week night as well. I'm not paying the big bucks for this as I am not rich. But, I will give small compensation which is negotiable.

Go to my site to see my artwork. There are a few pieces there in the gallery that are similar to what I'll be doing. http://www.treiops.com/art

Please contact me via message through my profile.

Thanks!

----------

Then, on Friday May 30th at 8pm, join us for a long-awaited lecture on sea slugs and their perverse mating habits, by nudibranch afficionado Patrick Krug. Patrick’s talk will explore the world of frustrated virgins, slug swingers, and inappropriate sex between species, illustrated with videos and slides sure to shock the more prudish of terrestrial vertebrates.

Our night of undersea debauchery will continue with music by our favorite vertebrate swingers, Fol Chen, who may or may not be aware that they’ll be performing against a backdrop of giant inflatable sea slugs.

Hello folks! Come to my opening happening this Tuesday in downtown LA! Here's the details:

ANIMALS of the FUTURE
A solo show by Treiops Treyfid at MJ Higgins Gallery

Opening reception Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, 2008 from 6 - 9pm.

MJ Higgins Gallery
400 S. Main st. Suite 103 (4th st. east of Main), Los Angeles, CA 90013
213-617-1700
http://treiops.com/art/animals_of_the_future.html

Features performance by LA electronic outfit Brain Garden http://www.klownhead.com

All exotic animals on our planet are under threat of extinction because of loss of habitat due to pollution, global warming, and human population growth. Fragile ecosystems are in serious peril all over the world and will pay a heavy price from the increased storms, floods, and coastal erosion that global warming will produce.

So, who are the critters that will survive the coming catastrophe? They will be the ones that are able to live with or near humans, can live in an urban or semi-urban environment, and use human garbage as a food source. These are the "Animals of the Future". They include raccoons, opossums, rats, roaches, crows, coyotes, squirrels, sparrows, pigeons, deer, seagulls, lizards, rabbits, skunk, chipmunks, mice, feral cats, stray dogs, and many other species.

The pieces in this show will highlight and tribute these overlooked noble survivors that live sometimes literally in our own backyards. The pieces are sculptural in nature and are made out of mostly recycled elements but also include exotic materials, and lighting.

Is the latest hot artist mostly hype?
If you want to make money in the art market, you'll have to avoid the buzz machine. Here's how to navigate a world of body fluids, puppy dogs and diamond-encrusted skulls.
By Ernest Beck

You might not have heard of Terence Koh, a 38-year-old artist who sometimes uses his own excretions and body fluids in sculptures and installations.

But in the art world, Koh is a hot commodity. With big museum shows to his credit and collectors clamoring for his creations, prices for Koh's work are rising so rapidly that a recent article in New York magazine carried the cheeky headline, "Is Terence Koh's Sperm Worth $100,000?"

It might be -- for now, anyway.

As the art market continues its four-year bull run, prices for many artists appear to defy gravity. Nowhere has this trend been as evident as at last year's Art Basel Miami Beach, an art show where crowds from around the world defied gloomy reports about the economy and bought art priced in the millions. Check out Art Basel Miami Beach

But future prices are uncertain. And some consider younger artists like Koh to be a riskier bet, because they tend to be the darlings of investors and speculators -- who, unlike seasoned collectors, tend to buy and sell art on perceived returns and market buzz, with less consideration given to artistic merit.

"Younger artists, whose prices have risen like a meteor, are more vulnerable because their work is unproven," says Mary Hoeveler, managing director of the Citigroup Art Advisory Service, which advises wealthy clients on art investments. Without an ongoing track record of strong sales, today's hot artists could easily become yesterday's news.

What's hot now? These days, it's China. Art for 50 cents?

As its economy booms, contemporary Chinese artists are high on the collector's lists of must-have work, and prices for many of them are soaring. At the October auctions in London, for example, a painting by Chinese artist Yue Minjun sold at Sotheby's for $5.9 million -- the highest price ever paid for a contemporary Chinese work.

Despite the records, advisors like Hoeveler remain wary. "People are looking to new markets and places to invest, so China is subject to the same speculation as the market for younger artists," Hoeveler says.

Another private art adviser, Thea Westreich of New York's Thea Westreich Art Advisory Services, agrees. While she won't comment on prospects for individual artists, she says "it's fair to assert that the value of so many artists, whether from China, Berlin, New York or India, will not be sustained long term."

Expert collectors say that for more secure returns, investors should steer clear of artists whose prices

have been bid up by current hype, looking instead to undervalued works with solid aesthetic merit. Slide show: Art for $100 (and up)

For example, if you admire the deeply beautiful colors of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, whose prices are already stratospheric -- a painting by the late artist recently sold for $80 million -- you might want to look at another American abstract expressionist, Joan Mitchell.

In the past, Mitchell's work was "overlooked," says Abigail Asher, a partner at New York art consultants Guggenheim Asher Associates. Today, Mitchell is more widely recognized and appreciated, but prices for her work average "a 10th of a Rothko," Asher says.

The contemporary market is particularly difficult to assess because it's crowded with newer collectors keen to buy the work of their own generation. Everyone is looking to crown the next master. See an art auction

The reputations of contemporary artists can swing wildly, depending on factors such as recent auction results, major exhibitions, media visibility (or lack thereof) and the state of the global economy, says Anders Petterson of ArtTactic, a London art-market research company that surveys art-world insiders. Chart: Hot or not?

Take Damien Hirst, the British artist famous for his pickled shark and, more recently, a diamond-studded skull. (The skull attracted a lot of media attention and reportedly sold for $100 million -- but to a group of collectors that included the artist himself.) Hirst continues to be a collector's favorite -- so expect prices for his work to stay high. The artist "will remain fresh in buyer's minds," ArtTactic reported in May, "in a market where the attention span is getting increasingly shorter." Photo: The $100 million skull

Ditto for Jeff Koons, a controversial American artist who uses kitsch images like puppy dogs and model trains -- as well as images of himself having sex -- to satirize contemporary culture. That approach apparently has staying power with collectors. His sculpture "New Hoover Convertibles" (comprising, yes, Hoover vacuum cleaners encased in a plastic box) sold for $4.7 million last year, a price level that the artist's work is expected to maintain, ArtTactic forecasts.

Other artists with high market-confidence levels, according to the recent ArtTactic survey, include Richard Prince, the subject of a big retrospective this fall at New York's Guggenheim Museum, and critically acclaimed photographers Cindy Sherman and Andreas Gursky.

But artists can just as easily fall from grace. German painter Neo Rauch, a member of the much-talked-about Leipzig school of artists from the former East

Germany, has slipped from all-positive sentiment in an ArtTactic survey last year to a more cautious stance today. The reason? Although a Rauch show at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art was positively reviewed earlier this year, recent sales results have been lackluster and "no exciting prices were achieved," ArtTactic concluded.

ArtTactic also says market confidence is slipping for Marlene Dumas, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Maurizio Catalan and Jeff Wall -- despite an exhibition of the Wall's work this year at MoMA.

Miami-based collector Craig Robins says he tries to avoid the market hype and follow his own intuition; his favorites include Richard Tuttle and John Baldessari, both of whose work, he says, offers good value. See Robins' collection

"I buy what is intelligent to buy to add to the collection," says Robins, a real-estate developer who owns more than 1,000 works.

"I won't buy art that costs millions," he adds. "There are works of art that are fantastic for less."

Hi,

I'm looking for someone to help out during my art opening downtown on Tuesday night. I'm making some crazy artsy hors d'oeuvres and I need someone to occasionally walk around with one of the trays. The hors d'oeuvres are actually non-edible sculptures. Should be a very fun time. The opening goes from 6 to 9 pm and is at the MJ Higgins Gallery on 4th & Main.

Frame Source?

I'm looking for a good frame source in LA or OC for wood frames with glass and also probably basic matting. Nothing too complicated, in fact basic black and square would do just fine most of the time. Aaron bros isnot cutting it any more and I'm looking for 2x3 aspect ration frames usually and they are hard to find unless you go custom. I have tried a few online companies and haven't been too impressed, they require you to use plexi etc... Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated...

LA County Civic Arts Program seeking art for fire station

Hey artists,
I'm posting this for anyone interested. Check http://www.lacountyarts.org/ to contact them, but posted below are the specifics.

Good luck! Love to see working artists, and passionate!

----------
The Los Angeles County Arts Commission's Civic Art Program seeks artists to design, fabricate and install artworks for four new Los Angeles County fire stations, two in Santa Clarita and two in Palmdale. One artist may be selected for multiple stations. Several more fire stations are in the planning stages. Artists who respond to this RFQ may be placed in a pool for future fire station commissions.

The new fire stations will provide fire protection and emergency medical services to unincorporated areas of the County. Fire Department personnel desire artworks that are timeless, classic and modest.

The 11,000 sq. ft. Fire Station 156 (24525 Copperhill Drive, Santa Clarita), to be constructed in 2008-09, will provide fire and life safety services to northern Santa Clarita. The station includes a community meeting room, two equipment bays, dormitories and a kitchen. The County is constructing a temporary station on the site to serve the area until Station 156 is completed.

The 5,000 sq. ft. Fire Station 108 (28799 Rock Canyon Dr., Santa Clarita), currently under construction and due to be complete in August 2008, will serve the rapidly growing region of Santa Clarita and the adjoining area of Saugus. It is located in a residential neighborhood, and has a welcoming, home-like feel.

The 11,000 sq. ft. Fire Station 136 (3650 Bolz Ranch Road, Palmdale), located in a rapidly growing residential community of Palmdale, is under construction and will be completed in August 2008. In addition to the equipment bays and dorms for staff, this station includes an office and dormitory for the Battalion Chief.

Fire Station 136 Fire Station #136

The 11,000 sq. ft. Fire Station 93 (5624 East Avenue R., Palmdale) serves a residential area of east Palmdale. This station will also house a Battalion Chief as well as three equipment bays and accommodations for seven personnel.

Fire Station 93 Fire Station #93

Budgets

Budgets include artist fees, insurance, travel, fabrication, structural engineering, conservator review, delivery, permits and installation:

Fire Station 156: $69,000

Fire Station 108: $35,000

Fire Station 93: $56,000

Fire Station 136: $52,000

Selection Process and Criteria

Artists will be selected by a committee comprised of community and County stakeholders, using the following criteria:

* Proven artistic merit and strong professional qualifications;

Is any art event, gallery, or festival worth paying attention to that will only take slides for a submission? After all it is 2007 and we have these things called computers now. Seriously, who still makes slides?
The prices might be a bit pricey, but I had paid a pretty penny myself, and I have lowered it a bit since I have owned them.
They are owned, but never worn!
So still brand new really. =)
And also the prices are the way they are due to where the pieces are from or their age etc.
But like all the listings say, everything is negotiable! =D
So fear not and email me with what you want to pay (Be considerable! lol) And I'll see if we can't work something out... =)

What is the role of the artist in a world of global warming? Shrinking water supplies, partched crops, food riots, flooded cities, crashed economy, coastline incursion. Where do we fit in? The gallery system will most certainly collapse. Art patrons will not be spending any money on art which would be a "luxury item". Art Museums will go broke. In this world of chaos what will us artists be doing? What should we be doing?

What can I expect a gallery to do for me?

I'm having a show here in Santa Barbara and to make a long story short... they are willing to do ... nothing, Except take the money for the pieces that sell. and for this they charge 30% ... no promotion, no add in the newspaper, no free beer or wine for opening (yep, I get to supply that too) no contacting previous art buying clientel ... they do have a girl that helps you to hang your show, or i should say a girl that stands there and watches you hang your own show.

This is a beer and wine pub, not a proper gallery, but they do have art shows there all the time and the place is set up for it with nice couches and wall space

I was just curious... whats the norm for this type of situation? I've already spent hundreds just in art supplies and weeks and weeks on these paintings

Shouldn't I get a little more cooperation?

thanks!

Hey all. New to tribe and soon to be new to LA. I am looking to find some Live/Work Studios/Spaces/communities in the LA area, and was wondering if you guys had any advice on where to start? The only thing I can find is the Factory, which seems really hard to get into. Don't need somewhere fancy, just a good place with good people and real artists!!! Any advice would be so, so, so helpful!!! Thanks so much!!!

Finding ways to help our most gifted artists make a good living from their talents.

I'm currently working with several gifted artists. As an artist myself with decades of experience, I've encountered most of the same obstacles these artists do in making ends meet without selling out to some dead-end, mindless, straight job. Artwork is our "straight job". Real artists should be cherished by society, not dismissed as slackers. In the past several months I've made it my mission to create opportunities for the artists I come in contact with. So far, mission accomplished. Frankie Gentile, a very gifted and dedicated young painter and illustrator is currently showing at the Venice Oceanfront Walk in a mobil gallery I designed and provided, making a fine living from the sale of his paintings, sketches, and prints of over 150 of his past works. Showings are every Saturday, and Sunday from 12pm to 730pm. I'm calling to others in the community who can offer further information or advise to help Frankie and the other artists find gallery showings, community show areas like Venice, or other opportunities. Also to the other artists out there in the city who may need help, drop me a line, and we'll see what we can do. Thanks.

Hello Folks,

Want to get involved in a fun project this Summer? Our funded BurningMan Project, Le Museum de Material Retrouve (Museum of recycling) is looking for some volunteers to help assemble the structure. It's made entirely of cardboard so we need help cutting, glueing, etc. The space we're working is downtown in LA @ 4th & Wall st. We need help evenings and on the weekends as well. We're offering chips, salsa, beer, friendship, camaraderie, and techno. What more could you ask for?

Get Your Art Into a Museum!

It's every artist's dream to have one of their works displayed in a Museum. Now is your chance! Be a part of an exciting BurningMan adventure by contributing your talent to:
LE MUSEUM DE MATERIEL RETROUVÉ (Museum of Reused Items)

All you have to do is create a "reproduction" (it can be a loose reproduction) of a reasonably well known work of art from any era you choose made from recycled materials.

We have already assembled many great artists for our Museum but we want to fill all the nooks and crannies. So, we are looking for a few more people to do sculptural-based work.

Deadline in mid July.

But, I DO know that I have just posted a video piece about my billboard artwork on You Tube. My good friend Brad Cooper has filmed and edited this vid so you know it's good stuff. Well, you don't know that but, you really should. Check it owt:

public space improvisations

hi, i am experimenting with public improv, would be interested to meet up with other improvisers in the los angeles area while i am in town for the week,
here is the project i am working on, either come and join in or let's just meet and talk sometime.....

Improvising Democracy

Finding a Voice....
Listening to the Body, Re-inventing Public Space.

There are times when what needs to be spoken cannot be done with words. Finding a voice is a process...meanwhile we do have these bodies that often speak for us...
Call it body language or maybe, "starting a movement", there's an immediate ability through movement to communicate with and even change our surroundings, our worlds...
Whether or not you're an improviser, artist or some kind of social creative, you're invited to this series of investigations and experiments in how we communicate, move in and otherwise use Public Space....

Downtown Los Angeles will be the place, during the week of 21st May, for some research and re-discovery of space, place and maybe, the democratic muse?
We start with a warm up and then simply build with whatever improvisational movement/dance and other inspirations come to us (maybe sound, text, theatre...interaction with other creative citizen passers-by?) in a re-creation of public space in the City.
Our first public space exploration begins 4pm, Monday the 21st of May in front of City Hall (W. Temple and Nth Spring st. end of the building). Follow up events/actions/performances will be arranged and announced during the week as we continue to develop our ideas.
If you have some thoughts about public improvisation that you'd like to propose or collaborate in some other way, please contact me at mishek@gmail.com. For those interested some studio time and space can also hopefully be arranged to explore our group collaborations and ideas in a more contained venue.
---------------------------------------------

Room to Move and Play....

How and where do we make room for who and what we need to be in this world? How do we create Space for ourselves? Places to be heard? Places we might claim for a time? Space to take action? What is within our power to change? Where should we be drawing the line between Public and Personal?
How conscious (and unconscious) are we of the public spaces that we continually pass through each and every day of our lives? Are they simply thoroughfares, or the potential for much more?
What's the purpose of a public square, a park, a lobby, foyer, atrium or other gathering place if we do not only gather, but do not SEE each other? If we are not using the space to it's full potential to bring out our social imagination, to 'speak what is important' to us...to re-create ourselves and expand the potential of the social mind?
It's time to re-imagine the use of Public Space.
....It may begin with a movement, some physical contact, a sound, maybe vocal expression, maybe a conversation or dialogue...
....we move, change and evolve the space as we are moved and others move us...

Michael Dobbie, May 2nd.

PS: You can also ask me for a few pictures of recent actions and experiments in London and Berlin.

Hey Kids,

Be sure to come down to the Hive Gallery and Studios this Saturday for our monthly group show. This may be my last Saturday opening there. I have been searching for a larger work space downtown because I've been working larger and also because I need space for my Burning Man project (The Museum of Reused Items).

It's been a super 2 years and I'm very sad to leave. My heart is heavy but I look forward to the opportunity to bring larger, more ambitious works to the viewing public. Onward!

This Saturday be sure to come down to the Eco-LogicalART gallery located at 4829 W. Pico Blvd (just east of La Brea) LA, CA, 90019. I'll have a new painting there done on reclaimed vinyl billboard material. This year Peter Schulberg, the curator for Eco-ART has received donated billboard space at various places in the city that will be displaying the work of many artists. I was lucky enough to get one third of a billboard to put a piece on. It will be going up somewhere in the city in a couple weeks or so. In the meantime come to the opening and see a great group show!
6pm to 11pm

Also, the same night is another great show at Cactus Gallery in Eagle Rock. The show is called FOUND and has many works done by artists in recycled materials. I'll have 3 newish pieces there.

I'm looking for an artist work space in the LA area. Must be at least 20x20' by 10 feet tall. So, around 400 square feet or more. Must have electricity. Could be either indoor or combo indoor/outdoor. Willing to share existing space. Prefer Hollywood or downtown. But, Highland park, Glendale, Culver City, East LA, Boyle Heights, etc. ok too.

hey there,

i'm sorry about any cross-posting ire some people might feel; it's starting to get down to the wire for me with this project, and i thought i might have luck finding people to help with an art project in LA in the LA art tribe.

it's very short work, 3-4 hours, a wordless scene where the couple is walking around in a park, enjoying each other's company. doesn't require big acting chops, just the willingness to do it. would be ideal for two people who know each other, or are already a couple. i'm looking for an ethnic mix, one person caucasian, the other asian or latino.

it's for an audio-video installation that will be exhibited over the the summer in LA, at the LA deisgn center, and at LACE.

if interested or know anyone who might be interested, please let me know.

btw, i'm an internationally exhibited filmmaker and artist. you can of course check out my profile for more info.

thanks guys,

How do I do it? How do I get a great photographer to shoot my art, emphasing the details? How do I get a computer wizard to completely revamp/update my website(s)? How do I do these things when I am so broke that I can't even pay attention!? Barter you say? Okay! Here's the deal folks. I will exchange my art ability, existing paintings, or create an original art piece for anyone that can help me unmuck my career from the tar pits of poverty.
Yea verily!

Hey Kids,

Here's some group shows coming up that I'm involved in:

I was invited to make a piece of art based on a film for a group show downtown tomorrow during the art walk. I ended up with a sculpture based on THX1138. During the show Gronk will be showing his "BrainFlame" which is an animated planetarium film/projection. I've seen it and it rocks. Here's the d-tails:
http://treiops.com/art/greasegronk.jpg

And this Saturday I'll have 10 of my brand new "Dynamic Portraits" displayed at Create: Fixate in Hollywood. If you haven't been to a CF yet you've really missed out. Great crowd, energy, and fantastic art. C'mon down. Here's the d-tails:
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2007 : 7pm - 2am
Gallery Preview : 4-7pm
1530 Ivar Ave., Hollywood, CA
$15 Admission : Gallery Preview $5 suggested donation
http://createfixate.com/nexteventM06.html

Also, I'm curating an art show at the Stephanie Feury Studio concurrent with a play called "The Empty Bed". The opening for the group show and the play is Friday, February 16th. Here's these d-tails:

strange art opportunity

Hello,

I've started to collaborate on a few art pieces with another local artist. We are sort of trading back and forth with work that has been inspired by each other.

The piece I want to send back is a sound piece that is inspired by a found photo he gave me. What I'm going to do is assemble some found sounds and some monolgue over the phone and mix them together in a sound program to create a 2 minute or so piece.

So, what I need is a female to improvise a 30 second (or so) monologue based on three key words which I will provide and to record it on my voice mail.

So, if you're interested in this strange art opportunity contact me and I'll send you my phone number and the complete details.

Cheers!

Does anybody have a big ol' armchair/ Sort of Lay-Z-boy-esque? The kind you would just sink into and watch TV for hours? I need to take a picture of one for an art piece. I also need someone (male) to sit in it and hold a TV clicker. This pic will be made into a spray paint stencil. It will look cool. I swear!

Howdy Folks,

It's been awhile since I've posted anything here. Time to start it back up. I'm curious to know what people in this tribe are working on. Post about your currents projects or current work. Let us know how your spending your time artwise.

I've got a couple things going one of which is a group art show I'm curating next month. The show will be in a theatre during the run of a play my friend Sharon Yablon wrote. Sh'es an excellent playwright. Her stuff is very dark and humorous. Here's a link to the details:

There's a great show coming up of this great Norweigan painter named Odd Nerdrum. If Rembrant was a surrealist his work would look like his. Very bold, mysterious, enigmatic, dramatic, weird paintings. The opening is at the Forum Gallery on Beverly & Crescent Heights in West Hollywood next Saturday. I'll get the exact info & post it here.

There was actually a live elephant as part of the exhibition. My pics are mediocre but the show was great. Check em' out.

Wednesday I volunteered at this great gallery in Hollywood called Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions. It's right in the middle of all those wig shops & lingerie stores. It's been there 11 years, I think. They had a great opening for two artists, Dustin Shuler & Alexander Apostol.

Dustin's piece was this massive "vivarium" environment that mimiced condidtions in a rain forest. The piece was filled with live animals like tree frogs, lizards, turtles, and a few birds. The whole thing was miked. You gotta go down & see it. In the other part of the gallery was some digitally altered photographs of buildings in Caracas, Venezuela done by Apostol. There were also a few of his video art pieces playing. Good stuff. I'll be down there tonight (Friday) again. C'mon down.

Open Call for Photo Submission: My L.A. Pic

Open Call for Photo Submission: My L.A. Pic
This call goes out to everybody in Los Angeles. We want your digital photographs of Los Angeles for My L.A. Pic project to be included in the upcoming exhibit L.A. 225 which will be held at the Pico House Gallery to commemorate the 225th birthday of Los Angeles in September of 2006.
The objective of My L.A. Pic is to create a digital photographic presentation of Los Angeles’ neighborhoods as seen through the eyes of the people who live there. Show your side of L.A. that people wouldn’t normally see. You do not have to be an artist or photographer to participate.
There is NO entry fee and the youth are encouraged to participate. We also encourage Los Angeles organizations to share this information with their members. Photographs selected to be included in the exhibit are the sole discretion of the project’s organizers.

Photo Submission Guidelines

Number of Submissions Accepted: Each person may submit one digital photograph which must have been taken within the city of Los Angeles.
The following information must be included in the submission:
1-Where was the photo shot? Use nearest intersection. Example: Wilshire & Western.
2-When was the photo taken? Example: Aug.1.2006
3-What is the photographer’s first and last name?
4- What is the photographer’s age? Example: Age: 22

All photos must be:
Original: Photos submitted must have been taken by the person submitting, and may not be a reproduction of another image. Images that might infringe on copyright, trademark or that promote a commercial product will not be selected.
Family friendly: All photos must be suitable for viewing by general public, this includes children. Any photo deemed inappropriate will not be selected.

Size: All photos must be in JPEG (.jpg) format at 72 dpi. The dimensions may not be larger than 720 and smaller than 160 pixels. If this all sounds too complicated, don’t despair. It’s actually quite simple. You can even do it online for free. Just use your favorite browser and search for keywords like “resize photo”. We found the following website by doing the same: http://www.resize2mail.com/ Please note that we are in no way affiliated with this website and found them by doing a search on the internet. They are a free service and resizing your photo will take only a minute or two. It’s really important to send us the right size no matter how you resize the photos. We simply do not have the resources to do it for you. If you do use the said website (or any other) please choose the [720 x 540] dimension specification. Other sizes will not be considered.
Deadline for the first stage is Friday, Aug. 19, 2006 at 5pm.
Email your image along with the requested information to: myLApic@yahoo.com
You may only submit your picture once; multiple submissions will be disqualified. IMPORTANT: By sending your image to myLApic@yahoo.com you agree to allow the organizers to use your image in the L.A. 225 exhibition and its associated publicity.
This information and updates will be available on: http://www.geocities.com/mylapic

I have a piece that I donated to this show. Come down to support the event this Saturday.

jFERRARI Gallery to Host Benefit for Peru 's Horacio Zeballos School Atwater Village, CA, jFERRARI Gallery will bring together collections from talented artists, art enthusiasts and education advocates to raise funds for a very deserving elementary school in the small Peruvian town of Horacio Zeballos.

The fundraising will commence on the evening of August 12th from 6pm-10pm, during which attendees will be encouraged to participate in a silent auction. The works for sale will be donated by local artists including: Edwin Aguilar, David Haig Alexander, Lori Antoinette, Susan Berkowitz, Eduardo Bonilla, Lisa Cabrera, Joel Castro, William Conklin, Ernesto de la Loza, Danny De La Matyr, Ricardo Duffy, Jazmin Ferrari, Carlos J. Flores, Domenico Foschi, Nagy Girgis, Gus Hernandez, Javier Hernandez, Jason Jenkins, Sophia Louisa Lee, Juliana Martinez, Katie Moriarty, Angela M. Ortiz S., Lissette Perez, Jason Schaper, Marc Smith, Cole Sternberg, Treiops Treyfid, Cristian Vega -Rojo, Randall Williams, and more. Guests will also be treated to light refreshments, and will enjoy the musical entertainment from local musician Chapa.

Located on the outskirts of Arequipa, Peru, the school of Horacio Zeballos is a modest, makeshift academic resource that serves to enrich the lives of the children of this underprivileged region. Efforts to maintain and improve upon the conditions of the elementary school are bolstered by The Kindness Connection, a charitable organization created by three YMCA volunteers, Emily Broxterman, Ashley Sheffel, and Lisette Perez, who are committed to the expansion and development of the small community of Horacio Zeballos, Peru. Educational services at the elementary school are free to participating families who cannot afford tuition and registration fees. Servicing six grades levels, the school consists only of three classrooms and three state appointed teachers, with even the most basic school supplies in constant demand. Despite such limited resources, Kindness Connection and the citizens of Horacio Zeballos are aiming to include a junior high school as well as a training center in effort to expand their influence to a broader age range of students and their individual needs.

Community and global outreach is crucial in the crusade to secure a child's right to a well-rounded education and hospitable facilities. jFERRARI Gallery in conjunction with The Kindness Connection, invites you to contribute to this worthy cause through the enjoyment of art, music and charitable giving.

jFERRARI Gallery is a gallery of contemporary art located in Northeast Los Angeles. The gallery sits at the end of the Hyperion Bridge in Atwater Village, neighboring Silverlake and Los Feliz. The gallery focuses on its dedication to supporting emerging and established fine artists. The gallery is active with monthly exhibitions of diverse, unique and innovative works of art.

I just checked out this great art show at The Barnsdall Art Park (which is right accross the street from me in Los Feliz) last weekend. It's called Supersonic and has work from 9 MFA programs in the LA area. It was very inventive and AVG (Avant Garde). Def check it out if you get the chance. I brought my trusty camera and took some shots:

Paid Artwork / Performance event if you're not heading to the playa over Labor Day

Hola from Matty. I am curating artwork, sculpture and performance art for Nocturnal Wonderland music festival that will be happening in Southern California over Labor Day weekend. The event will host 5 themed areas, indoor and outdoor and we will have budget and space for all kinds of talent....both performance art as well as art and sculpture.

In the past, we've done fire art, big EL/light sculptures, fire dancing, stilt-walking, aerial stunts, pyro effects, video art and other cool multimedia creations.

If you're not heading to the playa this year, and would like to be considered for an art/performance grant and appear at this event, please send me a private message here on Tribe, or hit me via email at matty@mutaytor.com

Please pass this onto your other performer and artist buddies who might not be playa bound this year!

Thanks,

Matty

www.voxnovus.com
__________________________________________________

Call for Works for the 60x60 project

Subject: 60x60 (2006) Call for 60 second silent video shorts

The Following is the Call for 60 second silent video shorts for the 60x60 project in 2006

Vox Novus is inviting video artists to submit silent video shorts 60 seconds or less in length to be included in its fourth annual collaboration with the 60x60 project. 60 videos will be paired with 60 audio tracks from composers selected that year. The screening will include the 60 video shorts paired with the audio shown in succession for one hour.

There will be no pause between the pieces. Works may be less than 60 seconds in length, but may not exceed 60 seconds. Credits will be added to the end of the feature. Video selected that is less than 60 seconds long will be “padded” with neutral frames either before, after, or surrounding the composition. Please note that the total duration of the work including silence may NOT exceed sixty seconds.

Excerpts of larger works are strongly discouraged. 60x60 is a project of “signature works” and short works created specifically for the 60x60 project.

The call is open to artists of any nationality, age, or career stage. Works submitted must not have been previously performed or broadcasted. Submissions must be labeled with the artist's name and the title of the work. The submission form must be sent at the same time with the submitted work. Submission form must contain the artist’s name, address, email, phone number, title, length, and credits on a separate sheet (typed). Biographies and program notes may be included on a separate sheet, but must be typed and each may be no longer than 100 words in length.

Multiple works may be submitted. Each work must be noted on the submission form(s) and clearly indicated. Do Not send originals! No works will be returned, and may be performed in subsequent performances after the debut concert. All submissions must be postmarked by September 15, 2006. Selected works will be announced on December 15, 2006. Submission of the work(s) in DV must be accompanied by the submission form and sent to:

Submissions must include: Submission Form (including bio and program notes) and a labeled CD containing the submission in audio format. Submission forms can be downloaded at http://www.VoxNovus.com/60x60.htm or by written request to Vox Novus
