I work with dvd's, If I have the time. Combi's and steps, and difficult movements I practice everywhere. (and I mean everywhere)
I use the elevator for my balance practice, behind the comp. I make handmovements.
    Is also good for RSI.

I do yoga every day, mostly 30 min. I used to drill a lot every morning with DVD's, but my body is only asking for yoga at the moment after a long winter. ;-)

I also take one yogalesson a week (1 hour) and one tribal class (1 hour). If we have a gig coming up, we also practice a few hours a week.

At the moment my body feels like it's waking from a verrrrry long wintersleep... ;-) In spring I'll start drilling again!

Katrien that a lot! Or do I need to do much more? I have the same 'wintersleep' feeling at the moment......;-(
      Tonight I'm starting to drill......

To drill or not to drill....??

Sometimes with a dvd, but most of the times wit a cd and just practice the movements, and also the choreographes we already have to perfect them.
And with my baby om my arm i do crazy movements, he like's that very much. He is used to the music, I danced untill 8 months pregnantcy!

I practice every day. The way i pratice is not allways the same, though. Sometimes i just pop a dvd and do the whole thing, sometimes i put some appropriate music and do some basic bellydance movements such as snake arms, circles, omis, mayas, piston hips, shimmys, etc. The music i use then can vary from a drum solo (because of the several percussion rythms) from a bellydance remix. Sometimes i just don't feel like anything of the above and i just put some music and do some improvisation. I use whatever i like, sometimes classical bellydance music, sometimes arab pop, tribal ..... I think doing yoga would help me a lot, but i get kind of frustrated when i dont even come nearby the stances, because lack of flexibility.
Anyone can recommend an easy beginners' yoga workout program on dvd?

What are piston hips? My english isn't that good you know :)

I try to practise everyday...but it doesn't work all the time...sometimes my body just wants rest...and I think that is very normal. I started taking Bikram Yoga classes last week and this week I already went 3 times...so proud of myself :) ...during teaching weekly classes and workshop and performing and travelling I try to take as much classes as I can like Modern Dance, Hip Hop, Flamenco, Jazz, Bodyshape & Stretch from an ex-balletdancer...a.k.a. drill instructor :)

And yes...waking up from the winter...love it!

Tjarda, what do you think of Bikram? It seems rather rigid to me (but I'm not really a drill-me-to-death girl :D)...
Lourdes, I don't know of any ideas, sometimes you can find nice clips on YouTube.com as well...
But I do know a good book for beginners, it's called The Easy Yoga Workbook, by Tara Fraser, look it up on Amazon.com, or check her website, yogajunction.co.uk/. She's based in England, so maybe it's better to order it through Amazon.co.uk or something.
I had a Spanish version when I lived in Spain, and perhaps they have it in Dutch also.

Hi Judy, what do you mean by rigid? Did you ever do it? I am not really a drill-me-to-death girl too :) I love it...for me it is just what I need at this moment....this form of yoga makes me want to push my boundaries the way I like...always trying to take it a step higher...more balance...flexibility...strenght and endurance. And the teachers are great, they really talk you trough the whole session so you don't want to stop at all. So it is not that they drill you to death...you can take it as far as you would like...your own personal choice....but I think that goes for every dance/movement class you take...you can do it half or really try do challenge yourself by doing it even better than before. And I really feel very clean after stepping out of the heated room...take a shower and step in to the world again :)

Lourdes: show me the piston hips at Magical Tribal :)

Hi Tjarda, I'm sure you know this one too, you just know it by another name. I mean when you move your hips up and down vertically, they must not slide outside, otherwise it'll maybe look like a maya or something else. With a sharp accent on the down, the move is usually used in drum solos. The dancer goes very often half or just all the way down with the movement. I'm learning to do this , but i'll probably won't ever be able to go all the way down with piston hips because of my bad knees.

            hi tjarda,

by rigid i just meant the heat, the intensity/length of the session and the fixed 26 poses...
it's the opposite of soft lying and relaxing on the ground yoga... :)
never tried bikram, but have seriously considered giving it a go before i went to spain.
i used to be into martial arts, swimming, weight lifting, running, more intense forms of yoga like power and ashtanga, and loads of dancing (7 classes a week, and also daily yoga, bellydance drills and pilates at home!)... i actually used to loath any slow form of yoga or any slow ANYTHING, also have done t'ai chi for a year which did wonders for my energy... however, i didn't have the patience for it, found it waaaay too slow... that's why bikram appealed to me in that time...
however, everthing has changed a lot for me and i felt drawn towards more soft (or woosy :) forms...
and learned to enjoy myself more and relaxing more instead of being a 'streber'.
i guess i became tired of pushing myself all the time so started exploring a sloth's (=luiaard) life more and started to look at my old ways as rather rigid.
nowadays i'm entering a new phase alltogether, trying to find a way to balance best of both, so enjoying myself and relaxing, but also trying to find some 'fire' again without overdoing it.
at the moment i'm starting to have had it with the slothiness thing, it has became a bit too much... heheh, and could actually use some kind of bikram kick in the butt... :D

              hey rosita,

to answer your question HONESTLY ;):
i take classes with tjarda once a week, honestly, and i practice yoga at home a couple of times a week. HONESTLY... but at times, when i'm wrapped up in work, it can be less. i have even skipped a class or two in stressful times (and that's the truth... tjarda can attest).
i usually work with books and sometimes with a dvd, and also with the knowledge and experience i gained in the past...
i'm thinking about maybe taking an extra dance class, or start running in the park,
however, yoga is my main 'uitlaatklep', so my first goal would be to crank it up to every day, plus meditation, and after that, also in the evening... i love doing yin yoga in the evening to unwind, it gives me this totally blissful high!
also, the upcoming workshops (sharon, mardi) are an extra reason to get in shape.
i don't want to drop on the ground after only 5 minutes of drilling... heheh!

I'm so gonna 'drop on the ground after 5 minutes of drilling' !

But ready and standig back at 6 min.

(om dat ik mezelf niet wil laten kennen, maar kijk maar goed naar me beentjes, die trillen de pan uit! )

                HONESTLY.....;-)

At the moment, on top of working almost fulltime, and teaching between 6 and 10h a week... plus workshps here and there, not enough.

I manage doing a few hours each weekend and on monday evenings, but that's mostly dancing in preparation of my classes and workshops (working out drills, preparing choreo etc) and hardly really the stuff i want to work on myself for myself right now. i'm lucky that my advanced class is really small at the moment so those 1,5 hours are really "i practice and the girls follow my practice routine", that has been great to get some drills in. also my troupe practice sometimes works like that, so that's nice (multi tasking!)

when i have a show coming up, like with Bozenka a few weeks back, i add on a half hour after every teaching evening (coming home dead!), for my own practice, to work on my performance, and throw in a few extra hours of personal studio time in the weekend. so that adds up to a few hours a week. but i cant do that weeks on end cause need to get to bed to get to work in the morning.

and when i have time i do some stretch/yoga at home in the evening... depends how my body is feeling..

i really really want to find a yoga class that ties in with my shedule.

      Hey Rosita,

I think i will be going for some yoga soon too. Sitara knew a very good workout, DRU yoga, (on book and DVD) It looks very good, so i think i'll try it. Thanks Judy for your piece of advice too!

Lourdes, have you tried this dutch website? www.yogatv.nl

It's the new website form the dutch yoga-magazine and they also have beginners classes (in dutch!) on it!

        Have fun!

PS: the 'yoga voor dummies' DVD and book series is also great for absolute beginners!

Wow Artemisa that a lot!!! I can imagine you're coming home dead!
How was the show with Bozenka b.t.w ? Doesn't Bozenka have 'body to kill' ? wow....
Lourdes, I supposed to go to Yoga today...I saw a mesage in my mailbox....I'm invited to a class here in my neighbourhood, but missed it, reading it to late...;-(
          Next week I'm starting classes.
Hey Katrien, I knew an American site to who gave lessons like that, yogatoday.com I've tried It for a little while but all those english term for everything was just not working for me, I stood in a ' half -moon- sulitation, and need to look op everytime if I was doing it right....
So a dutch site would be great.....at least whe all understand it better....I mean my english speaking is fine, ( writing a little less...;-)) but even though its nicer in 'nederlands'
thanks for all those great tips!!!

I used to go to local yoga classes but I now try to practice on my own for 15minutes every morning and/or evening. So 15-30 minutes of yoga/stretching a day if I feel brave. When I keep it up for a while I feel healthier, I slacked a bit before and during the holiday but am now back on track. I hope ;-)

I work only parttime (20 hours) since this year, so now I have a little more time than I used to for personal practice. I try to follow 2 hours of classical ballet a week and teach 5 hours of bd classes. I try to drill at least 2 times a week next to that with a DVD. Azizas practice companion and Sharons tribal fusion DVD are my favorites of the moment for technique, but sometimes I switch to Suhailas Fitness Fusion or a Veil/something else DVD. When I have a show coming up I try to practice combinations/skills or work on choreos for half an hour every other day or at least 3 times a week.

My advanced group is pretty small, so when it fits our program they get to practice with me on stuff I try to work on for myself (new material from workshops etc..) and I try to use a little of the new stuff in the lower level groups as well.

When I'm physically lazy I try to update my website, do advertising, post blogs, read tribe, listen to new music and so on. A lot of new choreographies/combos and partial lesson plans are made up in the car ;-)

Wow that's a lot! I don't practice that much as you do, ( but then again I don't teach) but Dancing is in my head 24/7 ! So is my son, so its crowded in my head...;-)

its only since last year that practice time has become a bit more prominent for me, before that while working more hours it was impossible, I'd try for a few days but then laze out completely.

and aw, I know the crowded head feeling ;)
a lot of conversations with me go like: <interesting topic by other person, then question> and me: <uh?>
