Over 7 years of performing and teaching with Ultra Gypsy during a formative time for tribal fusion, have given her unique insight to sharing the essentials of great technique, dynamic presence and the joy of this dance form.
Enhance and deepen your understanding of belly dance fundamentals. This workshop will set the foundation with technique drills for layering, shimmies, locks and slinky slow movements then apply the concepts to tribal fusion combos. You will also learn a short choreography that highlights Rose's dynamic approach to contemporary fusion belly dance, yes that means dancing.

Rose Harden has performed and taught extensively with Jill Parker and Ultra Gypsy throughout the United States and Europe and is a founding member of the Barbary Coast Shakedown. Both projects have pushed the boundaries of belly dance and sought to honor belly dance with exquisite artistry and phenomenal technique.

During her 3 years as co-director of Ultra Gypsy she was a contributing force in the company’s dynamic choreography, and innovative costuming. As a performing member of Ultra Gypsy for over 7 years, her style is influenced by Jill Parker and inspired by the diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area performance community.

Rose also performs with the Cyclecide Bike Rodeo and The Lifesize Mousetrap. When she is not performing, Rose manages Rosehips Designs, her costuming and clothing company.

Dancer in costume to be live henna model????

I'm holding an event on June 20th to celebrate the World Night of Henna and am in search of a dancer interested in being my henna model for a large henna design. Preferably I'd like to henna someone that I can coordinate with their costume, so you'd have to be willing to wear your costume for a few hours (an hour while I do the henna and several hours while the henna is curing so as not to disturb it. You'd be my "display" for the early part of the evening as I finish your design and then are free to mingle as I do henna on others. Probably henna on midriff, arms back, whatever is available in your costume. Email me at LotusHenna(at)aol.com and let's discuss. $7 donation ~ This event is a Benefit for the Mara Triangle in the Masai Mara animal conserve in Africa, where post-election violence has seen a collapse in tourism due to political turmoil. The Mara Conservancy, a non-profit, was entirely dependent upon park entrance fees paid by visitors to manage the Mara Triangle, and since the New Year they've had to suffer severe cutbacks in critical park operations. Working on a reduced budget has already had an impact on their effectiveness, and May was tthe first month since January that they've started with no money to carry on.

Last month, rangers caught 6 poachers who had killed 37 Thomson Gazelles, and last month of ot heir rangers was shot and seriously injured when chasing cattle rustlers. 1-3PM SAGAT: Using the techniques of the Egyptian Sufi Zikr, Karim will present the sills as a classical instrument and not simply a dance accessory. Karim has developed a comprehensive sill method that utilizes drum techniques and an ambidexterous approach. Students will learn the Arabic rhythms by name and how to play them wile dancing! Dancers will learn to use the cymbals to communicate rhythms to a band and accent solo dancing and body movements. Dance combinations with cymbals will be taught. Dancers and percussionists of all levels are welcome. Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his finger cymbal teaching approach.

3:30-5:30PM ARAB FOLK DANCE INTENSIVE: This class is an intensive introduction to the traditional group dances from the Arab world. These dances are primarily unisex, and emphasize synchronicity and group cohesion. This workshop includes Dabka line dance, Basic Tahteeb/Assaya cane dance, and the group-healing ritual motions found in Zikr and Zar practices. Each dance is taught efficiently as an introduction to the style, and is an initiation into possible future study. These dances are less glamourous than the performance-oriented heroism of the solo dances found in the Arab world. These are the dances done by the people in social, celebratory, and spiritual group settings. They can be taught to dancers at any level, as both a cultural and artistic experience. The group movements and concepts can later by extrapolated into performance-calibre skills and themes. (Please bring a straight cane and sneakers or dance shoes for this class.)

She’s danced solo around the U.S., performed with Rakadu Gypsy Dance, and is currently a member of Subee Djinn. SuperKate has also studied other dance forms, from jazz and Romany Gypsy to hip-hop and Bhangra. All types of dance can be incorporated into tribal fusion.

This event is called NO Diet Day and has been created to give people an opportunity to love their body as it is and embrace healthy lifestyles. Long range shopping!

Hello all! Glad this tribe is up and running.

My sister is moving to LA in a month or so, Long Beach to be precise, and she's promised to do legwork around the city (she'll have access to a car) to shop for me (I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, not very glamarous.) So I've been browsing the LAraqs site to get an idea about what sort of BD things I want her to send me.

My AmCab teacher has a good selection of direct-from-Egypt stuff for sale, but tribally, I'm lacking.

So where would be the best place to send a non-BD person to buy ethnic jewelry or coins and beads in bulk? (I have no idea how an ATS themed store would operate, we just plain don't have those!)

Now, I just have to train her to chant "Show me something Mardi Love would like."

Workshop #2 – Tsingani Signature Moves

Workshop #3 – “Tsingani Tsass!”

Looking for versatile, strong bellydancers ready to work hard and push themselves technically and artistically in new directions. Must be open to performing a wide range of styles including classical Egyptian, Lebanese, folkloric, tribal fusion, etc. Experience with Suhaila technique is strongly suggested or at least willing to put in the extra time and practice to gain the technique needed. Technique is learned in class not rehearsal. This is a no drama dance company. We laugh, sweat, and have a great time. No divas please.

Requirements: attend a minimum of one of Aubre's classes per week and all rehearsals (Tuesdays 9-10pm and Sundays 1-4pm) and a small fee to cover rental costs (approximately $30 per month).

I provide most of the costuming and props. Dancers will need to supply their own shoes, makeup, and jewelry. I also bring in various guest lecturers and teachers for Lumina exclusive workshops (my treat to help expand our knowledge and continue to inspire).

Please bring a photo and dance resume to the audition. Include answers to the following:
Why would you like to be apart of the Lumina Bellydance Company?

P.U.R.E. L.A. chapter- Guerilla bellydance

P.U.R.E. has a new L.A. chapter, open to dancers with intermediate to professional experience.

Public Urban Ritual Experiment is a collective of dancers taking music and dance into the streets for the purpose of healing and peace. PURE's goal is to affect positive change within ourselves, each other, within the audience, and the greater society. Our dance brings together ancient sacred world traditions including Middle Eastern, Chinese, Romani gypsy, Israeli folk, Flamenco, and Indian dance.

Tamra-henna is now on staff in the Dance Department of Glendale Community College and is teaching beginner level Middle Eastern Dance in the evenings that is an amazing deal:

Spring Session is February 19 - June 11, 2008 on Tuesdays and Thursdays - 7:45-9:17 pm.

The registration fee is only $30!! + other college fees (about $37). You can also buy a parking pass for $60. Even with parking and all of the fees, it is only about $4 a class!!!!!

and you get 1-1/2 units college credit!

Specialty Yarn in LA

Anyone know where I could get Colinette Point 5 in Southern California? I'm working on a tribal costume and I'm real picky about color so I'd like to see it in person. I know it's from the UK but I've heard that some specialty yarn shops in the US carry it. Any ideas where, or perhaps where I could get something similar?

Tribal Fusion Classes in Orange County

Just an update on instruction in Orange County!

Tribal-Fusion at Hidden Talents in Huntington Beach, now REstarting October 9th on TUESDAY nights, from 6-7pm (moved from Wednesdays).

In addition, the Saturday morning classes through Tustin Parks and Rec will stay the same, starting October 13th from 8-9am for 6 weeks!

There's a vintage clothing store in NoHo that has new bellydance costumes for sale. They're $249 and include bra, belt, skirt and head and arm bands. Seems like decent quality for the price. They have a lot of colors available--just ask. I have no connection to this place and haven't actually bought anything there, but I thought I'd let people know that it's a possible source.

Cost:only $30!! + one time admission fee at the college that's about $20.*
(after the registration fee, it's less than $1 a class!!!!!)

and you get 1-1/2 units college credit!

If interested, you need to act quickly because first you have to apply for admission to GCC, then you register for the class.

- Mesmera (her students.. Mes is actually going to be in Texas) [Donavon on Drums, Craig Collins on drums and Jim Sullivan on Clairinet] is performing on the Hoover stage on Sunday @ 2:00
- Legendary drummer Gamal Gomaa and Donavon performing on the Sanborn stage with Cheb i Sabbah on Sunday @ 8

Did you know that Los Angeles has the second highest number of people living with AIDS in the nation? I've volunteered at AIDS Project Los Angeles, and I've seen first hand how many people depend on the support it offers to AIDS patients in LA.

Hiplash on YouTube Finally!!

Soooo, here's what you all (okay, maybe not "all" but *some* of you, or at least a *few* of you) have been waiting for!!!

Hiplash finally has a video on YouTube!! Yay!!!! I am so excited! The video is of our performance at the monthly showcase, TaXim in Eagle Rock, CA. It was so much fun, and I think we had a pretty good show. Solace played live music, which was amazing as usual. We even had an encore presentation after the crowd shouted for us to come back out! (well, they were shouting... hmm, maybe they were saying something else?) ;)
