Drawing from the wisdom body traditions of Pilates & Yoga, as well as extensive professional and personal experiences in the fields of Holistic Health, Dancer Rehabilitation, and Bellydance, Deb & Aubre combine forces to bring you this jam-packed weekend including:

-Core Yoga & Pilates for Dancers
- Experiential anatomy/movement labs
- Team teaching with Aubre & Deb
-Injury prevention and rehabilitation for common bellydance injuries.
-one-on-one attention.

This workshop weekend will assist you in radically shifting bellydance posture and technique, and freeing up new movement pathways to support healthy, embodied dancers. We will discuss injury prevention and self-care; learn ways of protecting overused areas in bellydance--such as psoas, low back, and hips, and deepen our practices to stretch, strengthen, and activate the body in preparation for bellydance. A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance.
Saturday:
1-2: Pilates For Dancers Warm-Up (Aubre)
Learn basic Pilates principles and how to apply this work in creating a strong and stable body placement for dance. Pilates is also a great rehabilitation module for dancers.
2-4: Lower Quadrant: The Root of it All (back, hips, pelvis, sacrum & legs) (Aubre) From balance to stability and freeing the body for all the wonderful isolations of bellydance, Aubre will present exercises and techniques to understanding the kinetic chain and interconnected quality of the lower half. Including special attention to sacral stability while maintaining strong hip isolations.
4-6p: The Spine: The biomechanics of spinal stabilization, articulation, and extension/backbending, from both Yogic and Pilates perspectives. (Aubre & Deb.)

Sunday:
12-1: Core Yoga for Dancers Warm Up (Deb)
1-3: Upper Quadrant: The neglected area of Bellydance. (Deb)
Free up the neck/head, shoulders, spine, &sidebody to create that intoxicating look and feel of ridiculously slow, slinky bellydance; allow for sharper isolations; and create more fluid, articulated movements from the head to the fingertips. Focus will be on the importance and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle, and how it relates to everything you do in bellydance. This module will include lecture, experiential anatomy, and therapeutic yoga/somatic practice, with hands-on adjustments. All material will then be applied to bellydance posture, technique, and combos, with particular focus on arms, core, and ribcage.
3-4: Bellyrolls and Abs: Understanding and isolating the deeper core muscles for the smooth, fluid moves of bellyrolls and undulations. (Aubre)

Paintings- A Study of the Orientalist Image is a presentation of Classical and Modern Bellydance inspired by the images from paintings, costume design sketches, and cheesecake art from the Industrial Age up to the Golden Age of Classical Bellydance(late 1800's-1950's). Each piece is inspired by an image from Orientalist artwork, when European and American painters traveled to the Middle East for inspiration, and they found the fascinating subject of the dancing girls. A flood of Bellydancers became the subject for paintings for several decades, and the turn of the century brought in the highly sexualized, Western interpretation of the "Harem Girl", mostly non-MidEastern ladies depicted in cheesecake poses with tiny bras and sheer pants. Salome is one of the most frequently depicted subjects, and the whole idea of the dangerously sexy femme fatale became wildly popular.

The challenge of dancing to Live Music is a special one, and something that every dancer can use in her performance career.

Master instructor Souhail Kaspar (www.neareastmusic.com), the originator of this unique style for teaching Traditional Arabic Dance, began his formal workshops in the United States in the 1980's. In this class, he serves as a teacher and coach for all levels and styles of dancers. Mr. Kaspar gives students the tools to "hear" Middle Eastern Rhythm and Music and the skills to match the traditional dance movements of Raqs al Sharqi to what they hear. His presentation style is clear, precise and fun!

Kashmir Isis of Los Angeles has been an avid student of the dance since the early 90's, having spent years carefully studying with local and international teachers in weekly classes and workshops. She is a graduate of the Ansuya Certification Program, and has performed with Live Musicians in and around Los Angeles since her debut in 1999. She will illustrate how the movements match the music to create a seamless performance and how to grow the skills and maintain them for use in different performance settings.

A great foundation for any level dancer, of any style bellydance.

Their are two reasons why their is a change. The first I had no control over. I could not get the studio at the time that I wanted and second I recived a letter from Cynthia on September 15, 2008 saying"are you going to dance at Caba Ribal? I see you are offering a work shop at the same time.Cindy" I will bring this and the other 14 letters that Danita let Cynthia write to me with me so that anyone who would like to can read them. Both Cynthia and Danita will be their so you can ask them in person what is up. I had changed the dancing application before I sent it, and had asked for a late afternoon/ early evening slot.

For information on, or to register for the November 8 work shop, or on the future Belly Magic work shop, please feel free to contact me via e-mail here on Tribe net.

Hi All,
Aepril Schaile is performing at “An Evening of Experimental Middle Eastern Dance.” She’ll be in LA Oct. 16-Oct. 28, 2008. If you are interested in either hosting a workshop or taking private lessons, please contact her at:
aeprilschaile@hotmail.com

Aepril Schaile is an American priestess of the Dark Goddess. Working through the ancient, and ever-evolving, art of Bellydance, she becomes Trickster, Warrior, Ghost, Storm, Grieving Mother, Killer, Seductress...Aepril's performances invoke the archetypal Feminine shamanistically, and theatrically. With a background in theater arts, Jungian psychology, and mythology, Aepril's creativity and style of movement incline naturally toward exploring mythic themes and infusing meaning and story into her dance. A musician as well, Aepril brings her sense of sonic drama and timing to her dance. Aepril's performances include Night of 1000 Goddesses at Morocco's Studios in NYC, EAST:MEETS:WEST in Portland, OR, and Tribal Fest 2008 in CA. She was a Guest Artist at Rakkasah Spring Caravan 2008. Recently moving her base to Salem, MA, she teaches classes there, and offers workshops everywhere. She directs Exquisite Corpse productions, and is currently producing a show: Descent: Dances of the Dark Goddess. Aepril holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art. She can be found at http://www.aeprilschaile.com

Preferably I'd like to henna someone that I can coordinate with their costume, so you'd have to be willing to wear your costume for a few hours (an hour while I do the henna and several hours while the henna is curing so as not to disturb it. You'd be my "display" for the early part of the evening as I finish your design and then are free to mingle as I do henna on others. Probably henna on midriff, arms back, whatever is available in your costume. Email me at LotusHenna(at)aol.com and let's discuss. I just need one dancer, so I'll post back here when I've found someone.
Workshops with Karim Nagi of Turbo Tabla
Saturday, May 10, 2008
co-sponsored by Aubre (323.868.7111 or aubre@aubredance.com)

1-3PM SAGAT: Using the techniques of the Egyptian Sufi Zikr, Karim will present the sills as a classical instrument and not simply a dance accessory. Karim has developed a comprehensive sill method that utilizes drum techniques and an ambidexterous approach. Students will learn the Arabic rhythms by name and how to play them wile dancing! Dancers will learn to use the cymbals to communicate rhythms to a band and accent solo dancing and body movements. Dance combinations with cymbals will be taught. Dancers and percussionists of all levels are welcome. Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his finger cymbal teaching approach.

3:30-5:30PM ARAB FOLK DANCE INTENSIVE: This class is an intensive introduction to the traditional group dances from the Arab world. These dances are primarily unisex, and emphasize synchronicity and group cohesion. This workshop includes Dabka line dance, Basic Tahteeb/Assaya cane dance, and the group-healing ritual motions found in Zikr and Zar practices. Each dance is taught efficiently as an introduction to the style, and is an initiation into possible future study. These dances are less glamourous than the performance-oriented heroism of the solo dances found in the Arab world. These are the dances done by the people in social, celebratory, and spiritual group settings. They can be taught to dancers at any level, as both a cultural and artistic experience. The group movements and concepts can later by extrapolated into performance-calibre skills and themes. (Please bring a straight cane and sneakers or dance shoes for this class.)
