They've only been to Texas, from Austrailia, twice in 5 years (last time, they were so impacted by Austin, they wrote "The Grackle Cackle", you gotta be there to know!) and I would love for the LCC to be the place they MUST return to when theyre back!

I am originally from Houston and found the Last Concert Cafe to be an oasis in Houston growing up. I live in Austin right now and am playing in a band called Funkotron. We are a psychedelic funk jam band. We played at the LCC and had a decent turnout but it was mainly friends we know in Houston and people that came from Austin. We want to start playing there more often bringing high caliber Austin bands through Houston. So If you like the idea of various Austin bands coming regularly post a reply or just look out for Funkotron and help support our musical endeavor.

Looking forward to NM music

As Alicia suggested in a thread otherwise best forgotten, it's starting to feel like a storm front approaching Houston. It's been over 10 months since nm last played here, so we can look forward to a lot of firsts:

- the first Houston visit for whiz kid drummer Sean Hutchinson
- the first Houston visit for ace knob twirler Travis Bickle
- the return to Houston of Marshall Harrell as the full time bassist
- the first Houston appearance of the Marsky Hutch rhythm section
- the first Houston performance of a bunch of new songs & covers

Naked Truth, a Jeff story song featuring full 3 part harmonies, just debuted last weekend. Bo's Shelter, performed only a couple of times last fall, reappeared over the weekend, ditto his tribute to Missy Barron, All We Have Is Time. Jeff's instrumental Modus Operandi hasn't been played in Houston, nor has the Neil Young cover Don't Let It Bring You Down. Not to mention the Talking Heads cover Slippery People. And the new original instrumental Seven Rivers...

Of course the band almost always breaks out some new material in Houston, so who knows what's in store. Whatever it is, you can be sure it's gonna rock.

In a land where birkenstocks and beads rule supreme,
you will find that everyone's favorite hippie haven
and Mexican restaurant is Last Concert Cafe. The
place started out as a humble Mexican restaurant, but
it was slowly take over by the alternative-lifestyle
types. Nowadays, you can go to the Last Concert Cafe
not only to enjoy tostadas and enchiladas but also to
partake in a drum circle or take in a psychedelic hula
hoop show. The menu is simple Tex-Mex peppered with
the occasional award-winning burger and (hippies take
note) vegetarian options, but its dominated by the
enchilada, which is hardly a hippie dish. Cheese,
beef, spinach or chicken - you name it - and they will
roll it up in a tortilla and smother it in sauce. The
Last Concert Cafe will definitely leave you scratching
your head at times - but the food satisfies more often
than not.

You dont have to change your name to Moonchild or
Earthwoman when you step inside, but be ready for an
alternative lifestyle, especially when the sun goes
down. This compound, hidden on the edges of downtown
on Nance, is very unassuming during the day, but at
night everyone comes out to play. Appetizers are
normal Tex-Mex, we like the botanna platter, with its
quesadillas, jalapenos, chicken flautas, and guacamole.
It'll definitely fill up those used to alfalfa
sprouts and organic tofu. The potato with green
chile soup is one of the best items on the menu.
Chunks of potatoes, simmered in chicken broth mix with
pablano peppers, cheeses, and pico de gallo, the
resulting dish is statisfying. The "Apolinars
Enchiladas" are delicious, two roast-beef-stuffed
enchiladas with chili gravy and rice and beans.

On any given night you'll hear music coming from out
back. Order a beer and head back there to enter a
different universe. Vendors are selling beads and
jewelry, hula hoops are being whipped around
gracefully, and it all turns into a mellowed-out
party. It would be hard to conjure up an atmosphere
for Tex-Mex in Houston that's more transportative than
this one. So wipe the dirt off the kids' feet, strap
'em to your chest in a hemp carrier, and come on down.

Bands The Black Math Experiment, Live Oak Decline, and Mo Pair and the Ugi Mooks, will be playing free to benefit the charity, and as a memorial to honor and celebrate 3-month old Aubrie Kristine Acosta who died of SIDS on January 12th.

The concert was put together by Acosta's grandparents, Brian and Amber Trafton owners of Wounded Rabbit Productions, to celebrate the great love and joy she gave to the world during her short stay on earth. Ronald McDonald House Charities provided comfort and support to the family during their time in the hospital, and now the family would like to give back to the charity by inviting you to this very special benefit.

Admission is $10 at the door. You will be able to enjoy the bands throughout the night starting at 8 pm. Food and drinks are extra, but the proceeds from the admission go directly to the charity.

Last Concert Cafe, one of Houston's oldest (and definitely friendliest) live-music venues continues to serve up great music and delicious Tex-Mex since 1949. LCC is known as the best place to catch jam bands in Houston, but also features funk, bluegrass, rock, blues, world beat, rockabilly and more!

On February 9th, the entertainment will include bands from various backgrounds starting with Houston's own The Black Math Experiment. Since their inception in 2004, they've become one of the state's leading live acts, often compared to DEVO and The Pixies. They became famous for the shout-along sarcas-hymn "You Cannot Kill David Arquette" whose subject met the song with great amusement, and sent the band a box of gourmet cupcakes in thanks.

Also playing is creative rock band Live Oak Decline, celebrating the 2007 release of their first full-length album HELLO WORLD, which has been acclaimed as a vintage perspective on modern times channeling the spirits of Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and David Bowie.

Additionally, one of Austin's more interesting bands, Mo Pair and The Ugi Mooks, will be groovin' some bluegrass and folk music all for your entertainment.

LOS ANGELES - The city that popularized the fast food drive-thru has a new innovation: 24-hour medical marijuana vending machines.

Patients suffering from chronic pain, loss of appetite and other ailments that marijuana is said to alleviate can get their pot with a dose of convenience at the Herbal Nutrition Center, where a large machine will dole out the drug around the clock.

"Convenient access, lower prices, safety, anonymity," inventor and owner Vincent Mehdizadeh said, extolling the benefits of the machine.

But federal drug agents say the invention may need unplugging.

"Somebody owns (it), it's on a property and somebody fills it," said DEA Special Agent Jose Martinez. "Once we find out where it's at, we'll look into it and see if they're violating laws."

At least three dispensaries in the city, including two belonging to Mehdizadeh, have installed vending machines to distribute the drug to people who carry cards authorizing marijuana use.

Mehdizadeh said he spent seven months to develop and patent the black, armored box, which he calls the "PVM," or prescription vending machine.

Convenience and privacy
A sliding fence protects the tinted windows of his dispensary, barely distinguishing it from a busy thoroughfare of strip malls, automobile dealers and furniture shops. A box resembling a large refrigerator stands inside the nearly empty shop, near a few shelves stocked with vitamins and herbs.

A guard in a black T-shirt emblazoned with the word "Security" on the front stands at the door. A poster of Bob Marley decorates a back room.

The computerized machine requires fingerprint identification and a prepaid card with a magnetic stripe. Once the card and fingerprint are verified, a bright green envelope with the pot drops down a slot.

Mehdizadeh says any user approved for medical marijuana and registered in a computer database at his dispensaries can pre-purchase the drug and then use the machine to pick up.

The process provides convenience and privacy for users who may otherwise feel uncomfortable about buying marijuana, Mehdizadeh said.

At the Timothy Leary Medical Dispensary in the San Fernando Valley, the vending machine is accessible only during business hours. An employee there said the machine was introduced about five months ago, and provides speedy service.

"It helps a lot of patients who are in a lot of pain and don't want to wait around to get help," Robert Schwartz said. "It's been working out great."

Mehdizadeh said he sought the advice of doctors, and decided to limit the amount of marijuana per user to an ounce per week. Each purchase from the machine yields 1/8th or 2/8th of an ounce. By eliminating a vendor behind the counter, he said, the machine offers users lower drug prices. The 1/8th ounce packet would cost about $40 — $20 lower than the average price at other dispensaries.

'It's to medicate'
A spokesman for a marijuana advocacy group said the machine also benefits dispensary owners.

"It limits the number of workers in the store in the event of a raid, and it'll make it harder for theft," said Nathan Sands, of The Compassionate Coalition.

Marijuana use is illegal under federal law, which does not recognize the medical marijuana laws in California and 11 other states.

The Drug Enforcement Agency and other federal agencies have been actively shutting down major medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the state over the last two years and charging their operators with felony distribution charges.

Mehdizadeh said the Herbal Nutrition Center was the target of a federal raid in December. He said no arrests were made and no charges have been filed against him.

Kris Hermes, a spokesman for advocacy group Americans for Safe Access, said the machine might benefit those who already know how much and what strain of marijuana they're looking for. But he said others will want to see and smell the drug before they buy it.

A man who said he has been authorized to use medical marijuana as part of his anger management therapy said the vending machine's security measures would at least protect against illicit use of the drug.

"You have kids that want to get high and that's not what marijuana is for," Robert Miko said. "It's to medicate."
