    You want to contact
Ken Daluge who has a long standing Batteria.
    drumfeel@cruzio.com
Be sure and tell him (and everyone) that I sent you.

There is a wonderful all woman's Samba group to and because I've had the flu and have a splitting headache tonight, I can't remember their name.
I'll bet they'd be up for it.

    Gary "Bucky" Kehoe ( gwkehoe@cats.ucsc.edu)

also has been playing for Brazilian dance classes for a long time and might want to join in with a smaller non-Bateria styled marching group.

You might also contact Arthur Hull (VILLAGEMC@aol.com)

    and Jim Greiner (jgreiner@handsondrum.com)

who are wonderful facilitators of drumming groups and might want to put something together.

Dror Sinai of Rhythm Fusion (RHYTHMFUSION@rhythmfusion.com)

usually will put together a small middleeastern marching group replete with Belly Dancers.

Additionally, you should contact the Santa Cruz Ethnic Arts Network (SCEAN) and have them post a 'call to arms' to any marching group.

I also just played a very hip gig with Pyrocussion and the owner of the Pyrocussion machines, Bob, told me he is considering putting together a flatbed truck to use to drive around the big machines he has. I'll talk to him personally about seeing if he wants to get involved.
Wow, was that a cool gig at I did with them, replete with a large brass, industrial 'drum' set that I used to go with the fire percussion.

I'm seriously considering reviving the Santa Cruz Funk Corps which is a rag tag ad hoc group of drummers who use traditional band marching drums to play rhythms like New Orleans 2nd Line, West African 6/8 rhythms,
Burundi war rhythms, Hip Hop and Drum and Bass. (rickwalker@looppool.info)

I can't promise it but someone should let me know as soon as a definitive time has been decided upon.

Remember, that in a parade like this, you have to have a large staging area..............a place where folks will congregate before marching and a large stage disenbarkment space...........where people will congregate after the parade.............without permitting, the cops will be all over us before we even get started at such places. You just won't be able to hide
200 people all congregated at once.

I have been involved with a million parades from 50 people to several thousand participants (Carnival in San Francisco) and I've seen what happens if people don't get permission first. It sucks horribly, but in this case, they do have the power.

I have been a Santa Cruz Arts Commissioner for the last three years and have just resigned but I do have the ears of the mayor and a couple of influential City Council members who are very concerned that the City Council is being viewed as not being supportive of music in particular.
If you get any kind of flack from the Police, please let me know ASAP and I'll do what I can do.

I would also suggest, if there is time that you get on the agenda of the next City Art Commission meeting and try to enlist their lobbying help to accomplish all of this.

I know people have talked about not doing it officially but I would heavily advise against it.

Best of luck. let me know if I can be of service.

    yours,
    Rick Walker (percussionist/live looper)

If not having drums or marching harnesses is stopping you, please let me know asap. I might be able to connect with some people who can help out.

I would love to see a resurrection of your drum group!

Great suggestions. I contacted all of these good folk via email. It would even mean more if you chatted them up to see if they were interested. Rick, would you talk to some or all of these folk too?

We are cautious about putting ourselves in a position where we are asking for permission to use our streets. We know there is a required $1 million bond, special event fees, fees and permits for fire services, police, and sanitation. To say it is a hassle is an understatement. To say it is beyond our means is a big understatement. But more to the point, who would even file the permit? Who is responsible for this? We all are. We are responsible for ourselves and for our community. But no one person or group is making this happen.

Plus, this kind of thing, people having spontaneous celebration should be the norm, not the exception. They would ask us to file a "special event" permit, yet this should be nothing special.

On the other hand, since we are going to be doing this anyway, it would be swell if the city council, if the mayor's office, if the Santa Cruz Arts Commission came out in favor of it.

If not, that's okay too. In a few years, once they understand the inevitability and our persistence, they'll come to look proudly upon our little do-it-yourself grassroots people's parade as a unique town treasure.

Do you want to try and convince the SC arts Commission to give us the thumbs up? How about the city council?

Good suggestion about the staging area. We'll meet at 5pm on New Year's eve in the empty lot in back of Saturn Cafe.

no time to reply in depth but you need to apply officially for me to approach any of these people, Rico.

It's the way of their world. Let me know as soon as you have done so..............contact the SC police............wait for the reply.............the instant you have the reply, if it is negative..............email me promptly and I'll go to work.

I'm hella busy so I don't want to do anything until you have
approached the police officially. ............... not because I don't care but just because it won't be efficacious until you've had an official rejection...................if you don't get rejected...........then , wunderbahr.............we're on!!!!!!!

        good luck................stay in touch.

        yours, Rick

As far as the police are concerned, for them to be okay with it, we have to file a special event permit. And part of that process is identifying one person who is willing to be responsible for the whole affair. Another part of that is that we are required to get a $1 million minimum insurance bond. Neither are going to happen, I'm afraid.

Actually, Arthur Hull and the Village Drum Circles are already down with it. Permitted or not. So that gives me hope in terms of established groups going beyond what we normally think of as possible.

            Then rock on!!!!!!!

New Years Eve is the one evening in the year where musicians are payed
incredible amounts of money more than usual..........so if I get a gig I
have to take it (January and February are really frightening months in terms of coming up with income as a professional musician which I am).

If not, however, Ill be down there with a project or at least joining someone's project.

The all-women's group is called goddess of funk. amber is the leader, and they are awesome. If they're not already busy, i bet they'd be totally into this, and could probably pull together some dancers also.

I don't have the contact info off hand, but if you need it, let me know and i can find it for you.
