we need a balancing act here! Anyone know when we can start fluttering about Tortugas on line and who will be playing?

Phish at the Coachella site for Halloween for 3 nights. I think actually, this is just what Tortugas needs to balance it all out. And Im guessing what Tortugas has in store will be awesome and a great balance to Phish.

But, I think its time to start rolling on it since theres so much talk of Phish Halloween in Indio, it would be nice to have the Tortugas back up to go along with the conversations. Can we get a speculation date or something that we can announce for people to chew on out there?

SO FREAKIN STOKED FOR TORTUGAAAS!!!! I know its going to be amazing this year.

  • I'm guessing because Evergreen failed to get a permit for the event last year, and the noted impact on nearby FS lands (the "wookie problem" and the abuse of the meadow), that they have been told they cannot hold an event o that size again. I hope not, but last year was out of control, and there were a LOT of complaints.
    • I emailed about reserving a cabin for Halloween weekend 2009 and got this odd response with a referral to the "Symbiosis Gathering."

We are not yet taking reservations for the requested dates. Please refer to
      www.symbiosisgathering.com for more information.

      Warm regards,

      • That is odd, considering the Symiosis Gathering is six weeks prior to Halloween weekend!
        • FWIW, I asked a few more questions of the Evergreen people and basically got confirmation that the event is a go, but details and announcements are still being worked out.
          • thanks for the update, i woke up this morning wondering the very same thing... i've heard from confirmed bands, so yes! still on! with more cabins this year and phish to compete, it should be comfier for everybody :)
            • Who would some of these bands be???
              • I think I may have possibly heard a rumor : ) that ALO minus Lebo would be there playing separate sets (Brogan and Zach) and/or with other bands (Smootie). Dan and Jenna are expecting their first bebe on November 1st, so they will not be there for obvious reasons.
                • Hi everyone! heres some official info...its ON. that permit post was not accurate. we will have an annnouncement, of SICK bands, this week or next at latest...thank you for all the kind words!!
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Glad we got the festival back! However, this is what was posted on the FS internal law enforcement weekly report on 11/8/08:

"Stanislaus NF - On 10/31, a logger on an FS timber sale on the Groveland RD called the District and stated that he needed immediate law enforcement assistance. An LEO responded and found that a confrontation had occurred between the logger and a large group of people who were camping in the woods and had also pitched their tents on the logger’s landing. The logger had been operating his equipment right next to the tents and a verbal confrontation ensued. The LEO found 100’s of vehicles, campers, busses and tents on NFS lands and a county road. The LEO also found over 1,500 people camped on NFS lands so that they could attend the “Festival of the Dead” music festival at the nearby Evergreen Lodge. The lodge had not advised the FS of the music festival, nor obtained a group use permit. On 10/31, an additional LEO and Tuolumne County SD deputy attempted to keep the county road clear. That evening, they provided medical assistance to an intoxicated and drug-impaired woman who fell and cut her head. On 11/1, six LEO’s and a CHP unit responded. The Patrol Captain, District Ranger and CHP unit met with the Evergreen Lodge manager and obtained his cooperation to keep the road open and prevent additional resource damage on the Forest. Several LEO’s directed about 45 vehicles and people to leave a meadow. Multiple violation notices were issued for drug possession. "

We need to keep this situation under control, or we will lose Las Tortugas. We should not be encouraging free-for-all camping and resource damage - the meadow was TRASHED. I don't think that's in the spirit of Earth-kindness that we try to promote.
                    • In reply to Fred's post...I camped in the NF land last year and there was NOT 1500 campers, yes there were a few wookies (maybe 20-30) but most everyone was friendly. The reason the meadow was cleared of cars (not people) was because of fear the cars would get stuck because of mud. that article is over blown. I was the 3rd person there on wed. and I had a great time all weekend even in the mud.
                      Tony
                      • Tony, I really agree that mostly kind and conscientious people were present, although I encountered enough of the others to leave me a bad taste - yechh. Maybe Phish will keep them away...
Unfortunately, what matters in terms of keeping our events viable is public perception as well as our own, and there is a need to "police" our own scene to the extent possible to help prevent the type of perceptions that are reflected in the report I cited.
          • With Phish holding a their longest festival ever with the most shows ever, during Halloween, on the West Coast it was a given the 60, 000 some tickets wouldn't sell out that day, or week. But what has proven to be in hi demand, or short supply depending on which way you look at it is the camping RV and Car hey still have car camping passes together. RV passes sold out after four days of being on sell. At $150 a piece, I am surprised that many people are RV'ing down to Indio for Halloween. Maybe the Phish fan base has gotten a lot older than I thought, image a slew of gray haired dread-locked old folks, jumping into their massive bio-diesel RV's going on tour. Now that is a sight I hope to live to see. The point to this story is Festival 8 will sell out. It might take a month or two, but there are 60, 000 fans out their willing to fork over the $200 plus see Phish make history, done a new Halloween costume, and all in the warm autumn sun of Indio, California. See you there.
