Thank God for the instructions on ProdMod for making the hoop! It took me five hours, there were some ups and downs, but it came out great...with what I learned, I know my next one will be even better.
After doing all that work, I can understand why people charge 200-300 bucks for them, tho you can make one for about 50 or so. But be ready for an all-day project.
But I was able to follow ProdMod directions in spite of the fact that I have NO electrical knowledge: seriously, this was my first time with LEDs, wire, anything!
If you make the ProdMod, style, get the exact battery he suggests...it is an AA size, but is special in that it has more volts. Yes, the battery is $16, but it is the only one that will work with the directions as written.

I too recently completed my very own LED hoop with the help of two very knowledgeable friends here in Boston...it was certainly a very challenging endeavor and tested the limits of my patience...but in the end the reward was immense. I remember thinking the same thing about why LED hoops cost so much! Now every time you use your pretty hoop you have the extra satisfaction of knowing that you made it :) Happy hooping!

It is very rewarding. Note: If you are paying $16 for those 3.6V lithium batteries you are paying a bit too much. i sell them for $10. -
