Leimert Park straddles Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and is roughly bounded by Roxton Avenue on the east, Crenshaw Boulevard on the west, Rodeo Road on the north and Vernon Avenue on the south. The residential area reflects Spanish and Mediterranean influences while the commercial and multi-family units preserves the architect of the art-deco period
Leimert Park Village is a quaint commercial and African American cultural district within this historical community. The Village is considered the center of the African-American arts scene in Los Angeles, with flourishing blues and jazz clubs, as well as numerous venues for dramatic performances and poetry readings. It has been referred to as "the black Greenwich Village." The towering evergreen trees on Degnan Boulevard serve as the archway into this unique enclave. The park at the opposite end provides a focal point for activism, a popular place for street performance and gathering place for the community. “When the black community wants to speak out or send a message about something, quite often they come to Leimert Park to make that statement”.
