so i lost a friend over bellydancing- and i just want feedback to help me be a better person. here is my side of the story:
a friend of mine texted me saying he wants to hire me for a party which was on a day i get a few jobs (i would turn down other jobs to take his booking), and is also about 45-1 hour away from me and he asked me my rate. he never mentioned the word favor.
i texted him my rate- 200. he said ok and about 2 weeks later i danced for him, and we talked on the phone before i danced at his party. he never mentioned the price.
i didn't think to give a break because i never do that with friends because i was always warned against that- i have only lowered my price for one family i worked for and that was buisness related- not because they were friends, but i won't even go into that.
so i danced at the party, we hung out a bit after, everything was great until about a month later when during a discussion my friend says he has been pissed at me for a while for not giving him a break.
yada yada yada, he calls me a hypocrite and yells at me telling me that since he has helped me with things i should have known to dance for less for him. i felt so shocked that i just apologized that i never thought of that since i never give friends breaks, and he just tell me to baisically take my apology and shove it. after calling him back to try to get over this, he yells at me more telling me that i was just totally wrong. he says a bunch of bellydancers he knows told him that i was just totally insane to charge him my rate and they would have totally done it for less.
what do you think? i just think i won't ever dance for friends again, i'll just recommend another dancer!

Thanks to Zorah for her original posting, I'm updating the info!

What is Tribal Fusion Belly Dance?

The art of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance is a unique approach to belly dance that
combines a variety of dance styles along with ancient, modern, and ethnic elements with
Tribal Style Belly Dance as its core.
The dance is individual to itself and
allows for an eclectic collaboration of movement.
The study of this dance will enable the student to achieve a greater sense of body awareness,
gain more flexibility and stamina, and retain better posture. From here, you will become
familiar with improvisation, technique,
and the interpretation of the dance through different music styles.
My Teaching style supports an array of mental, physical, and spiritual well-being through the expressive art of dance & movement.

private party prices

Why are a lot of long island dancers charging so little for private parties? Everytime I get a call for a party on the island, nassau and suffolk, the callers tell me the average rate they hear is 125. Now I know the callers are just trying to get the prices down, but when I talk to dancers out there (not all!!) I always hear, "well they just don't pay that much and if i don't take it, some other girl will".
Think of how much time we as professionals have put into our training (classes, workshops, videos, music), into our costumes (even topkapi ain't cheap!), and into getting ready and traveling.
Hell, my crappy hookah lounge in bklyn pays 100 and that's not even a private party- no props!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's bring the rates up- it's good for everyone- we will all get more and it will push everyone to be better dancers- that is good for everyone!

Join us at the mermaid Parade on 6/23 in Coney Island

Come on, Long Island drum & dance fans!!! It's only Brooklyn!!!!!

For anyone who wants to join Eastwinds Tribal Drumming's pre-registered group "Beach Blanket Beledi" at the 25th Annual Mermaid Parade this Saturday , June 23rd in Coney Island, Brooklyn:

Here are some important details:

Cost: YES!!!! there is a $10 per person fee to march.. (There may be a discount if we get a large number...if that happens, it'll be a happy surprise! Plan on $10 just to be sure, ok?!) Our pre-registered group, which is called "BEACH BLANKET BELEDI," welcomes anybody and everybody OVER 18. Please note: Jeff & I are not making any money on this whatsoever-all fees go to the Mermaid Parade, to support the insanity that is Coney Island.

Time: Jeff & I will be there at 10 A.M. because I'm an anal retentive control freak...and... we want to make sure we get a good marching "spot" (not too close to anybody else's music, fer example.) We will be leading the ME percussion - we'd encourage the drummers to meet us no later than 1 pm... or not.. We would appreciate RIQ players...but any percussion is good. Remember...long parade, hot sun...plan ahead, my darlings!!!! Dancers can show up whenever the heck you like...it's all good! Just make sure you sign in and pay the nice Mermaid Parade folks. (BTW, zills...always a good parade idea!)

Finding us: I'll be l be dressed in Pirate/ Tribal garb, and wearing a small davul and a big smile. Jeff will be the big piratety-looking guy playing the AWESOME lead doumbek riffs. If anybody wants to make/carry a "Beach Blanket Beladi" sign, go for it! It's really crowded...you might want to arrive before 1pm...(Casey's left eye starts to twitch in anticipation of people showing up whenever they want..) Seriously, you REALLY might consider 1:15 at the very latest (noticible tremor starts in upper lip area.)

WARNING: Every year, some girls parade in pasties and other burlesque-style attire. There may be girls who will be scantily clad in our merry little band. Our group is strictly for OVER 18. Additionally, "Sheik of Araby" and "Gotta Go Back to Constantinople" way be spontaneously played on kazoo. Ok, you've been warned!

Questions??? Holla back on Tribe or to DrumNdancegrl@aol.com. See you on Saturday!

~ Casey

Hello.. new int he area

Hello everyone....

My name's Faye. I don't know why its taken me so long to find this tribe.
I moved back down to Long Island from Western Massachusetts
last September, and settled immediately down to work at a full time
9-6 job. After moving, and getting settled into a routine, I've been
dying to dance again. I was dancing in a class for about 2 years and
had begun to love belly dancing - fun, exercise, and stress relief in one!

So I've found here - and I -KNOW- there has to be belly dancing
classes on Long Island in my rough area. I'm willing to travel some,
but it seems the one class I've found anywhere near me is in the afternoon

Can anyone possibly give me a lead or help me out?
I'm in Ronkonkoma, and work approximately 9-6 5 days a week.
I'm looking for probably a beginner level class, I would attempt intermediate
but I've been out of dancing (as a whole) for nearly 9 months.

I'd appreciate any help!
Thanks!

~Faye

or be a musican, or a dancer and will still have an awesome time
plucking/strumming/dancing being around great people and playing.

So having been home sick the past few days, I was feeling even downer on myself and the slump I've been in...I am questioning my pursuit of this hobby that I loved from day one and also my abilities..I havent had something consistent in a short while and fell like I am losing my "tricks"...I also feel like I am nowhere where I should be..I want to perform again and have a home but feel lost in both...Anyways, I had some Chinese delivered for lunch and lo and behold in my fortune cookie it reads..."Look for the dream that keeps coming back. It is your destiny." I was like wow..So I guess I have to go looking harder cause I havent been having much luck lately.. : )

All of the monthly drum circles are very dancer friendly. And it's a really great place to play zills or riqq, too! To find a drum circle near you, just go to www.circlebeat.com to see a schedule. Enjoy! ~ Casey of Eastwinds Tribal Drumming

My name is Vernon and I play for several soloists & troupes. I travel around CA & the US, network with dancers & musicians, primarily because it is my passion! I love several forms of dance, and support, promote and produce events, and thoroughly enjoy sharing this artform with others! Please feel free to join our local & global networx!

Rhythmically Yours,
