Self sufficient cities

topic posted Thu, October 11, 2007 - 2:48 PM by  Bo
Most recently I am looking into the matter of self sufficient city planning. I havent studdied architecture or agriculture, but there are interesting concepts and projects out there to take a look at.

The idea is to integrate the aggricultural needs of a city within and surrounding the houses. One of the projects I got pointed to was
www.arcosanti.org . A project located in Arizona where these aspects are somewhat integrated. The idea originated from Paolo Soleri who is an engenious architect with revolutionary ideas concerning this topic.

Soon I will get involved into a simular project which is beeing formed and supported by the University of Agriculture in Vienna, Austria and I hope I can implement some aspects of drastical climate change and economical changes which are happening or emminent within the next couple of years. And of course I will keep you updated.

If you know simular projects or are part of it or have ideas, please feel free to post them here...

How far do you have to think ahead on such a project?

Right now all kinds of industrial methods are available to create a city, but is this really self sufficient and should it only be done with natural materials you can adapt yourself. (like metal and glass and so on...)
Or should we use everything of what we have as advancements to create modern housing?
    What do you think??

ever read the psyche genetics theory by s w pringle?

I met this author and was captivated by his ideas for self sufficient future and evolution of the human Race.
Which reminds me, I need to reread the book. I'll post some of his theories in here you'll dig 'em.

Pringle's theory I have actually no clue of so it would be highly interesting what he has developed, so please let us know...

Basically so to say I have heard of many concepts of self sufficient projects reaching back to the 19th century, but additionally I am also aware of the failure of these projects. Even when books were written in the 70s about these kind of theories, I am not quite sure if they are appliable now. Sure there are a manyfold of ideas which can be repruduced, but humanity has greatly evolved since then. Example: Slogan of the 60-70s: Love, Peace, Happyness. What we got right now is - We are ONE. This concept was basically unknown back then.
It was all about living together as individuals with enourmous ammounts of love, but the idea of a group conciousness and the concept loving yourself, this beeing reflected in others was not yet manifested back then even in a free thinking society.

My conclusion is that when it comes to the creation of a new self sufficient project we have to come up with new ideas ourselfs and the process of the evolution of this concept is taking place in all our minds in synchronicity. Beeing ONE creator.

See the villages of loreto bay, Mexico, they have got it going on, I once had a house with a solar package, built in Tucson AZ, in the community of Civano, they had a good dream, kinda lost it a little bit, but I felt good bout putting my $$ where my interests were, there are more and more communites coming into being, that are "sustainable" and doing the good work of building and living in accord with Earth, I have a dream again of living someplace again that has sustainability, self-sufficency, implemented, so yahooooo.
