Vagabond Hafla Update for Performers

Whew! Summer has started and the schedules are filling up!
If you are interested in performing, please PM me or e-mail me at naribellydance@yahoo.com soon.
Here's what the schedule looks like:
Etoile Arabesque is filling the June spot with their own wonderful show while I am out of town. Everyone should go check it out!

Here's what the rest of the year looks like in terms of dance spots:

July 15th: dance line up full
August 19th: dance line up full
September 16th : 2 spots left
October 21st : Spots available
November 18th: Spots available
December 16th: Spots available

The schedules fill up two or three months ahead of time, so get your spot soon!

This is what happens when Bran and I are let out to play by our partners......Unfortunately the video runs out at the end of Bran's solo part..We decided on monday to dance together and I mixed the music about 8 hours prior to performing yesterday...

It's all improv and madness...lol

Vintage Bellydance Combos for Soloists, Partners, and Troupes

ClassDescription:
Get cheeky with Obsidia and Nari of L'imprevu! Learn vintage bellydance combos in a small class setting that will get you moving, thinking, and creating your own combos! You will be introduced to L'imprevu combos that have been adapted for soloists, partners, and groups of three or more. Come to the class as a soloist, with your dance partner, or with your entire troupe, as this format is deisgned for everyone! Participants will walk away from this workshop with usable, adaptable combos for every style of bellydance. Notes will be provided. Dancers should have at least six months of instruction to attend. Space is limited, so sign up soon to get a spot and take advantage of the early bird special!

You will need:
~a yoga mat
~bottled water
~a pen and paper for additional notes

Additional Info:
~ there will be drills.
~there will be a warm up.
~ you will sweat. A lot.
~Nari and Obsidia will both teach equally. One of us will teach a portion while the other corrects/models. Then we'll switch.
~ we will answer questions ask for your feedback at the end.

And yes, we will focus on not only technique, but energy and intent of movement as well as the use of space during performance.

Props for Chris Cunningham, Photographer Extraodinaire....

Now, this may seems like a little bootie kissing from us, and it is (a little), but Obsidia and I want to promote to holy crud out of Chris Cunningham.
We completed a photo shoot with him recently and we couldn't have been happier with the results. I have posted a few of the photos in this tribe for everyone to see. He also took pictures of our performance at Pearl Bar which turned out really well.
Chris not only took photos of us that look great, but he really captured our friendship and our dance style. He laughed at our shenannigans, made us welcome in his studio, and let us be as goofy or as serious as we wanted to be. We thank you, Chris, for making the photo shoot an awesome success. Because of this shoot, we have tons of promotional material and really great memories.
Chris is also super reasonably priced, so every dancer who can work with him should do so soon before he becomes so popular none of us can afford him anymore!

here's a few not-so-thought provoking questions to ponder:

Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?

You know the signs on restaurant doors? No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service? what if someone goes in with No Pants? Would the restaurant still have to serve them?

If a doctor suddenly died while doing surgery, would the other doctors work on the doctor or the patient?

Do people who use sign language see little hands in their head when they think about what somebody said, or do they hear the words in their head?

Why when people ask you "what three things would you bring with you on a desert island?" no one ever replies, "A BOAT"

(yes, I actually have a book FILLED with questions such as these)

I’m thankful for being able to dance with my best friend of over a decade; that even though we’ve had good times and rough times (we call that the Dark Times), there’s always been that deep sisterly love underneath it all.

I’m thankful to know and come in contact with so many amazing people, dancers, souls. That I’m inspired by facets of every individual I come in contact with.

I’m thankful that I’ve finally reached a point in life where I am mature enough to see drama when it unfolds and courageously ignore and rise above it.

I am thankful that I have finally taken to heart this Buddhist saying “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned.” and applying it to every facet of my life.

I am thankful to have a passion that brings me joy, allows me to sing with my own unique voice and share my love of this art form called bellydance with the world.

Now that I’ve shared my thankfulness, what are YOU thankful for?

I am hosting Vagabond Bellydance community haflas begining April 15th at Avant Garden and would love for you to dance! You may dance solo or with your troupe, whichever you prefer. Kismet this Saturday...

I'll be dancing at Kismet in Dallas this Saturday. I'm doing the first solo I have actually choreographed in over a year, so I'm really excited. Well, the first song is choreographed, and the second is improv. I'm so happy that I will get to see old friends dance and Nichole's first Kismet performance. It's going to be a really special evening! Come out and support belly dance!

Dance from the Heart
National 2007 Annual Benefit
Benefiting Houston’s Lighthouse for the Blind
and
The Alzheimer’s Association

Open call for dancers! Dance from the Heart is looking for principal and supporting dancers for its upcoming theatrical production and benefit premiering September 29, 2007. All levels welcome!

Audition Criteria:
Performance of a two-minute solo (choreographed or improvised)*
Zills required (for at least part of the audition piece)
Veil and/or cane also welcome as part of the audition.
Styles of dance may include Ballet/Modern, Oriental, Folkloric, or Flamenco.
Please bring two copies of your music on CD. It should be the only track on your CD and should not be an MP3.

Audition Dates and Times:
Initial Open Call
Saturday, May 12, 2007 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm
Callbacks
Saturday, May 19, 2007 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm

Motivation...

This trip to Big D for 3rd Coast has got me PUMPED! I am leaving tomorrow and can't wait! It seems like every time I feel unmotivated or I have a moment of self-doubt, some wonderful event comes along, or I hear a song on my stereo, or a friend says just the right thing to get me motivated. And this time, it's 3rd Coast! I'm so excited to see so many of you and learn from some of the best teachers in the country! It's going to be GGRRRRREEEAAATT!
Anyway, I got to thinking about what motivates people. When you are feeling stuck, what helps you out?

Thoughts? Ideas?

"It really just sickens me that this is STILL going on!
I recieved a message on my voice mail last night wanting a private party tonight.
I called back late and the indvidual had already "taken care of it" but asked for my info anyways. Once the price was stated all of a sudden "well the person I booked is going to do it for $125." This was not a scare tactic since she had already booked the dancer.
C'mon girls this is just SAD!
There is absolutely NO reason for this. "

Teaching Question...

So I am teaching classes and I have a question for fellow teachers.
I have a student who can do mayas, but she has a great deal of trouble with range and control; her mayas are teeny tiny. Does anyone have any suggestions for excercises to lengthen and strengthen those muscles? I have her doing some oblique-strenghteners and general stretching (ex.-side crunches), but I'm wondering about anything else that may help her.
I'd love suggestions from you!

I haven't been around much in the bellydance scene lately, I know. Mostly, I have been unpacking and setting up my apartment with Dread. Things are going well, but I haven't had time to go to classes for like a month! I performed at The Velvet Hookah when I was in town last weekend and realized how much I have missed dancing! In the next couple of weeks, I hope to start attending classes again. I will also start looking for a gig in Houston soon and hope to actually perform at Helios in the near future. I am going to try to perform at the Kismet show in a couple of weeks since I'll be in town then. Moving really derailed my dance practice and performing! But I'll be back on track soon! How are all my dance sisters doing? I miss you all so much! : )

A Possible Future Event for Dancers?

Is there an interest in the future for dancers who would like to take workshops from teachers that are local (Houston) /from out of town that would include not only bellydance, but maybe Bollywood, African, Tunisian, etc...?
