Liquid Hip Therapy was formed during the summer of 2006 by three women who felt a connection to each other through dance. We were all dancing together with another troop, but found that our philosophies and motivations were quite different from theirs. As a trio, we decided to make a move to a more positive light.
Philosophy:
Liquid Hip Therapy is inspired by water. Water can be soothing, flowing, tranquil, and serene... the ebb and flow of tides, the rolling calm of waves. Water can also be wild and uncontrolled... raging torrents, sudden floods, swirling eddies and tsunamis. as water can be varied in its manifestation, so can a woman's body and personality. Water is the source of life, we cannot live long without it. Woman's hips bring forth that life. Water can be used for relaxation and therapy, and so can dance!
There is also significance in the three of us coming together. Historically, the number three has relevance. Three Fates, three Muses, three Witches, three wishes, and three phases of a woman's life (maiden, mother, crone.) Liquid Hip Therapy is happy to continue the tradition of the three.
Motivation:
Liquid Hip Therapy promotes the celebration of feminine energy in a non-competitive, non-judgmental environment. We all bring our unique gifts, personalities, styles, and bodies. As long as there is a body, there is dance!
Company Members:
Taviat: I have always loved to dance, it is my favorite form of expression. My first training experiences were in break dancing and hip-hop as a teen. I have practiced belly dance with three other groups of women in the Sioux Falls area prior to coming together with Laurie and Ann. I spent 2 years searching out Ahva to dance with, through circles of friends. I have always been a club dancer, and have a background in traditional Jewish dancing. Because of my varied background, I prefer the Tribal Fusion Style of belly dance. I am a native of Sioux Falls, and have enjoyed the experience of being raised here, and raising my own family here. I believe that dancing, singing, and making soup are inherent genetic memories, we can all do it.
Annaya: Coming of age in the experimental music scene of southern California, I was always drawn to the performance dance characteristics of the electronica, hip hop and world music scenes. When I was 25 and so overweight I knew I needed to do something or I was going to die, I decided I had to get moving. I closed the curtains put in a belly dance video and started moving. It was addictive, within months I enrolled in classes and studied for 2 years with Fahtiem in Long Beach, CA. The music, the movement and the positive support from a diverse group of women kept me going. The weight started melting, but even more importantly I found an outlet for an inner voice I didn't know I had. When life brought me to Sioux Falls, I knew I needed to find my dancing sisters and keep moving. I found like minds in Laurie and Julie and like a river, it all flowed together.
Jahdi: I retired from the U.S. Army after serving 24 years. I was looking for something feminine to do after so many years in a man's world, wearing boots and fatigues, I tried belly dancing, loved the female energy, and was hooked. I began training in the American Tribal Style (ATS) of belly dance in Sierra Vista, Arizona with the Sisters of the Desert Sands.
Associates:
Ahva: While going to college at UCSD- La Jolla, I took American Belly Dance. I was then hired into a job performing in restaurants and other venues in the San Diego area. I have performed professionally for 30 years in the American Style of belly dance. I am also a registered nurse, raise and train Icelandic horses, and have a wonderful family. I see belly dancing as a celebration of life and love, and dance every day.
