So I went to a pottery show with my kids over the weekend. Lots of great works there.
But guess what stood out for me and the kids......Llamas.
One of the artists there had made a few, as well as lots of other animals.
I bought one. I am using it as my avitar. I have two other photos in the tribe album.

We should also take a moment to welcome Amy and Arcangel to the tribe.
I want to encourage them to don a Llama avitar for the day and say hello to everyone here.

Dude, you ROCK! Seriously...when I started this silly LLAME LLAMA tribe (the name has changed since) I never thought it would last as long...but you guys have proved me wrong! WOW.

I took some time off to try to start my own "llama tribe"...got married and working on kids. (OK, one at the time)

I miss my friends here. I NEED to speand some more time here!!!

One more week

I started early. I opened up one of my christmas presents. Guess what was in it. A little Llama figurine. I am using it as my avitar. I may keep it for a while. It was a gift after all. And a lovely one at that.

I'm suprised

I took a few photos of a Llama while at the beach over the weekend. (We went to a petting zoo). The Llama was standing in the middle of the pasture. I was not expecting my camera to do so well. But to my suprise, it did. It's usually not that good when I zoom in all the way.

If I had known, I would have taken a few more photos. I will be sure to next time I go there. The place is not too far away, and the kids had fun there. So I'm sure I will end up there aging at some point.

I posted a photo in the tribe album. As well as a photo of the Llama sign I saw there. Wish I could have bought it.

Hello, Llamas

Dear groupies,
I'm new to the tribe. My name is Janine. I don't know much about llamas except that they're a favorite subject of Monty Python (witness the improved (?) credits of the movie, The Holy Grail.) Also, my best friend is nicknamed "Llama." Her real name is "Pamela," but that's so boring. And she likes being called "Llama." I'm kinda weird, too.
I live in Virginia, about an hour South of DC. I'm 36 and single. And I don't look much like a llama (thank Heavens!)
Do many of you live in England? I noticed that a happy fourth of July was wished "to all the Americans." I've been to London once. I loved it. I mostly visited some of the great many museums and tourist sites, but I went to the theatre one night and had cream tea every day. I gained a wee, little bit of weight, too. That was my sophomore year (of college)'s Spring Break.. I still love tea and scones and have it whenever my wallet and waistline can afford it.
I look forward to getting to know y'all.

I went to the county fair on Sunday. At one point, I turned to my son and said "You know what would be cool, if there were Llama here". I few hours later we went to see the animals and what did we find...Llamas. I put a few in the Tribe album.

I do have a question.
If you wanted to go see Llamas, where would you go?
There are Llama farms in Oregon, but non of them are near me. At best it would be a few hours drive to see any IRL. I would like to see our zoo have some, but they do not. We do have Alpacas in my area. But as we all know. Alpaca's are not Llamas.

So yesterday I woke up and I was sure it was Wednesday. So no llama-ness.

But also, here at work we usually have an office meeting set up for Tuesday. It's is almost always cancelled. In fact, last week we had one, and it was the first time in 2007. But apparently we had one yesterday (who knew we'd have two in a row?), and in addition to forgetting my llamaness, I forgot the meeting. Directly afterward everybody was asking me where I was . I was here! In my office! Where I always am (if not in the bathroom, you know). I can't see the other employees when they leave, since I got stuck in this hole with my face to the corner. Someone might have fetched me, but no. Humph.

So please, remind me of my llama status next Tuesday.

Look: llama Doesn’t that look like a llama in repose? If you don’t see it, think about this- the two “l’s” make up the llama’s neck, and its two ears. Maybe it’s looking a bit away from us or towards us, which is why we cant see its profile in great detail. The “m” gives it an especially wooly appearance. Do you see it?

18 llamas to appear in Rose Parade

PASADENA, Calif. - Llamas have waited 15 years to appear in the Rose Parade. On New Year's Day, 18 of the animals and their owners will stroll down Colorado Boulevard.

Joan Selby, a member of the Llama Association of Southern California, sent the original application to the parade committee 15 years ago.

She is not sure why it took so long for parade officials to let the llamas into the parade but suggested it might have been fear of the unknown.

"It could be that it just was not our time. Back then, llamas weren't very well known," Selby said.

Paul Holman, president and chairman of the board of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, said he has been told llamas had not been allowed in the parade because horses fear them and react as if the llamas were predators.

But he did his research and found a solution. The llamas will be staged in a separate area and have a spot toward the beginning of the parade, far from the equestrian units, Holman said

It can be a busy time of year. Parties, shopping, wraping, decorating. And doing all the things I usually do, like working. But that's no excuse to forget my tribe friends. So I will not do it this week.

Researchers could isolate useful antibodies against threats within hours!!

If terrorists ever unleashed a biological weapon, unusual molecules normally found in the blood of llamas could quickly help warn of the attack, scientists now report.

Researchers at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington and their colleagues experimented with antibodies, which act as the red flags and magic bullets of the body's personal defense arsenal.

Every antibody is a complex protein tailored to clamp onto a specific target. Immune cells in the blood and lymph use antibodies either to identify enemies for attacks or to directly bind to and neutralize intruders.

Scientists now regularly develop antibodies for use in medicines against cancers and other diseases or in sensors to warn of dangerous microbes and chemicals. Unfortunately, the antibodies currently used irreversibly break down at high temperatures, often limiting extended use in the field.

Biochemist Ellen Goldman at the Naval Research Laboratory with virologist Andrew Hayhurst at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research and their colleagues investigated llama antibodies. Past studies revealed that the binding regions of these antibodies and those from camels and sharks are unusually small, just one-tenth the size of common human antibodies.

Llama, camel and shark antibodies consist just of chains of heavy proteins, missing the additional lighter protein chains that more complicated antibodies from other species use. Their relative simplicity makes them more durable, capable of withstanding temperatures of almost 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

The researchers generated more than a billion kinds of antibody binding regions in the laboratory based on genes taken from small blood samples from llamas. After testing their antibodies against various biological threats, the researchers found they could within days successfully identify antibodies targeting cholera toxin, a smallpox virus surrogate and ricin, among other known menaces.

"We're interested in the development of biosensors for biothreats in the field, and hopefully these antibodies will help lead to more rugged antibodies that have longer shelf lives and not require refrigeration," Goldman said.

The researchers noted they could advance their technology to isolate useful antibodies against emerging threats within hours. Goldman added that while the antibodies they have tested successfully bind to their targets, they hope to develop antibodies that bind more strongly.

The findings are scheduled to be detailed in the Dec. 14 issue of the journal Analytical Chemistry.

Thanksgiving Road Trip

Hi all...remember me? LOL

I spend Thanksgiving on the road. Together with my woman, flew to San Diego and then
drove to Utah for four days making a just one pit stop in Vegas to see some old friends.

1500 miles later, 2 national parks(Zion and Bryce Canyon) lots of bad food, no turkey
...it's good to be home!

BTW: We found a farm outside Zion that was full of Elk, Bison and Llamas!!! Yahoooo!
