Whassup y'all!

FIgured it was time to try to get tribe's Logic scene back up in action, now that the long overdue Logic 8 has found its way to the streets!

First off, for those of you who don't know, Logic Studio is Apple's latest and greatest music production suite.

Bundled with Logic Pro 8, Logic Studio also comes fully equipped with applications such as SoundTrack Pro, Compressor and Main Stage. As if that weren't enough, Apple has bundled nearly all of its JamPacks (40 gigs total install size!) with the package, so there will be plenty of stuff to get you started.

Logic Pro 8 has been LONG overdue.
Some key new features are as follows:

1 - Sample Accurate Editing in the Arrange window
2 - New and enhanced GUI
3 - Simplified track creation system for Audio Tracks, Audio Instruments, Multi-Channel Audio Instruments, Multi-Timbral Audio Instruments, Auxes and Outputs
4 - Tab-To-Transient like feature
5 - Multi-take comping and 'quick swipe' editing
6 - Enhanced plugins (new algorithms for the compressor and a wicked multi-tap delay plugin!)
7 - Low Latency Mode for dealing with latency compensation
8 - 64 bit support
9 - Complete audio engine overhaul
10 - Better sound!
11 - 50% price cut
12 - No dongle!
13- Node feature that works with 3rd party plug-ins
14 - Wave Burner CD mastering application
15 - Impulse Response utility

Etc, etc, etc...

This tribe intends to help new users and veterans alike to get familiar with the latest version of Logic and all the bundled apps.
Stick around as we'll be posting some tutorials with tips n' tricks for Logic Studio.

Best,

My set up:

Logic Studio academic
MacBook Pro, running Tiger, 2GB RAM
MOTU 828
Glyph FW HD, 120GB (90% empty)
Maxtor FW HD, 750GB (95% empty)
Novation SL Remote 61

Laid down a skeleton project (drum loop and three soft synth tracks), and got one total OS crash. I didn't think too much about it until today. Had my guitar player over to lay down some simple guitar tracks, and ran into multiple Logic freezes, then several complete OS crashes. It's as buggy as Windows today!

I ended up running the project off the Glyph drive (rather than the Maxtor) - no improvement. Unplugged the Novation MIDI controller - no improvement. Had to have my guitar player lay down multiple takes of small snippets of his track - 16 bars of the head, 8 bars of the bridge, etc. - rather than let him play through a 4 minute song in one take.

Are there known issues with stability of Logic Studio with any of this hardware? Or is there something I'm doing wrong? The little monitor scale in the Logic display shows my CPU is barely being used, and the HD meter is also very, very small - so I don't think it's a HW performance issue per se - but this is really frustrating and I'm about to multi-track my drummer and bass player and can't afford this many crashes and this much down time.

Any help, as always, much appreciated.

For example, I would like to have my keystation 88 routed to a soft synth, and have my pad kontrol routed to battery or ultrabeat, and then record midi from both sources simultaneously to their separate tracks. Will I have to go "under the hood" into the environment for this?

Also, is there an easy way to automate softsynth parameters without knowing their midi CC#s? (Automating FX plug-ins works like this, just set auto to "record" and twist an onscreen knob). In general, I do this as midi rather than automation, but it would be nice to understand the options.

Lastly, does anyone know where Logic Pro keeps your serial # info? Now that I have bought a legit copy, I want to enter my own serial #, but couldn't find the pref file upon reinstalling...

Thanks for any ideas you have...

Hey, I'm using a Kurzweil K2600XS and a MOTU Fastlane USB for MIDI control of Logic Studio. Having all kinds of problems with notes hanging, no matter what instrument I use (EVP, EVB3, EXS, everything). I think what's happening is that note offs are randomly not being generated, so I have to go back to each track and tidy up the MIDI data after the fact, not to mention how weird it sounds while playing.

The Kurzweil has a "Panic" soft button in the MIDI XMIT page, but Logic doesn't respond to it. Can't find anything in the Logic Users Guide about an "All Notes Off" command except for the Caps Lock on-screen keyboard thing, which is useless for this purpose.

Happens both in Logic and Mainstage. I'm completely new to Logic and have been trying to comb through the manuals and User's Guide. I see something in there about creating a transformer in the Environment (to smooth out velocity response in EVP88) but don't even know where to begin to start.

Do I have to go get a dedicated MIDI Controller? Is there a way to get Logic to read the Kurzweil's Panic button?

Or really, the fundamental issue - how can I get these two to play in the sandbox nicely so there aren't all these stray hanging notes? Is this a common problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I seem to remember it running in a native instruments (kompakt?) shell or something of that nature. So, I did the install from disc, filled out all the reg forms and serials... and I can't seem to get logic to find it. The manual has instructions for other importing of instruments, but nothing about this. Any suggestions? It must be simple, but I'm totally at a loss at the moment.

Logic 8 MIDI Timing Improved!

According to tests conducted by this kind fellow, MIDI timing has been significantly improved in Logic 8 for external instruments when using an Emagic MIDI interface.

http://www.velvetacidchrist.com/gear.htm

Under 1ms jitter, wtf?!?!? This is great news...I'm gonna pick up an AMT interface and give it a whirl. You should be able to find one used (they're discontinued, but still supported by logic) for around $100.

I'll post my results to confirm.

For folks who don't understand MIDI jitter, this problem has plagued users of hardware synths for many years. Until now (according to the above link) MIDI timing has been better on the Atari ST!

Jitter, not to be confused with latency, refers to timing discrepancies due to data 'bottlenecks' inherent to the serial nature of MIDI. In a nutshell this means that your MIDI timing with external synthesizers is generally pretty sloppy and actually has gotten worse as computers 'evolved'.

This Logic 8 timing enhancement would be big news for people using external hardware synths and sequencers (myself included).

I just got Logic Studio, am a former Digital Performer 3.11 user (on OS 9), was going to go Pro Tools until I saw the big box, the small price and thought I'd give it a try.

I'm a performing and recording pianist and keyboard player, done everything from straight rock to goth to progressive to jazz to pop. Currently playing in a contemporary jazz band. My first attempt at exploring Logic Studio is at:

Would appreciate any constructive comments, suggestions and criticisms.

I am having issues with volume and dynamics - maybe I just don't understand how limiters and compressors and EQ interact and work, but I had troubles at mix down with lots of levels going red. Not sure If I'm just pushing too hot, or falling into the old rock cliche, "I want everything louder than everything else."

FWIW, I'm using Logic on a MacBook Pro, MOTU 828 I/O, and Mackie 624s to monitor.
