Thank you to everyone who attended our recent FireWater events. We truly appreciate your support. We have another fantastic day and night of dance lined up for Saturday the 14th November – so please mark this date in your diary and watch this space for further details.

The well respected and International group Helm will be teaching a one off workshop, in London, in Middle Eastern Rhythms for both dancers and drummers. In the evening we will be joining forces with Helm and Dajjah to bring you another fabulous night of FireWater. Merging traditional and contemporary Live music, performances, the chance to dance to live music yourselves, and more... this is a night not to be missed!!!

Based in California, Helm is a major contributor to Middle Eastern music and a huge influence and inspiration to many great dancers around the world. Well known for their collaborations with dancers such as FatChanceBellyDance; Mira Betz, Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes and Elizabeth Strong, Helm’s music provides a rich platform for expression for all to enjoy. www.helmmusic.com

Dajjah’s music is best described as “live mutations of Middle Eastern instruments with beats and bass and... feeling”. Seen previously at Tribalondon, Dajjah are renowned for bringing arab-beats/reeds & bass pressure for the discerning. www.dajjah.co.uk

To be placed on the priority list and be the first to receive workshop tickets and show details, please email: firewater.london@gmail.com

We look forward to sharing this experience with you!!!

Hi there, I really hope someone could advise...

Earlier this year, I went with a friend to the Tribalondon launch party with the Bellydance Superstars that was held at Shish in Old Street - and it was so much fun. My birthday is coming up, and we were planning on going back, even if there was no bellydancing, we loved the food and drink. Except, Shish has closed down :(

So, I was wondering if any of you could suggest a similar alternative? Where in London is good for a birthday party, but still reasonably priced? I guess we would like somewhere that does bellydancing, good authentic food, really good cocktails, and maybe has an area where you can sit on cushions on the floor, has a shisha pipe etc.
Birthday is November 10th, so would be looking to go on the weekend of 13th/14th/15th, or even a weekend after that. I know there's a place in Covent Garden (though I can't remember the name, I think it's on one of the roads off Neal Street/7 Dials), but a friend is having something there the week before, so that's out :/
Central London is preferable, though south is good too. I was going to pick somewhere from this list: http://www.londonbellydance.com/page10.htm ...would anyone be kind enough to cast an eye and recommend? The ones that have caught my eye are Efes II, Levant, and Maison Touragent, but I'm not sure. Or if there are any other places/events that you know of, please let me know!

It was this very tribe that got me to Shish in the first place, so naturally I'm coming to you again for advice. Thanks! :)

...and as an aside, I'm going to my first ever bellydance class on Thursday! Soooo nervous!

Just wanted to share the news that Safi's back in Camden. I ran into his new shop spot the other day in Stables Market which is not far off from where he used to be. The exact 'address' is 402-403 Stables Market, located in the 'basement' area. More specifically, if you're between Marrakesh (the Moroccan shisha cafe) and the food stall area, directly in front of you, there'll be a humungous horse head statue with steps leading down to a lower area. Follow that down, his shop's to the right - you can't miss it... or just look for the pillar of shoes ;).

He's still in the midst of organizing the shop, but he's got loads of stock - a variety of belts, circular beaded embellishments, pendants, tassels and the other bits'n'bobs from his old shop. He told me that he'll be here for the next three weeks, and then he's back to Afghanistan for Ramadan but someone will be around to look after the shop. And as per usual, if you mention that you're a belly dancer, he'll 'give you a good price'.

COURSE INFORMATION:
A unique, versatile approach to the belly dance intensive, a weeklong designed for dancers that are looking for inspiration from an artistic standpoint and who are interested in honing their ability to express through dance. This intimate group exploration will stretch your notions of how dance can be striking on stage, and allow you to unlock new areas of creativity in your bodies, and your mind. The seminar brings together many of the styles and forms from dance to theater which Mira has carefully integrated into an exciting, powerful, liberating approach to creation, including:
personal expression, musicality, historical and contemporary contextual analysis, structured improvisation and choreography, focused writing exercises and more.
TESTIMONIALS:

"The short review is that you should just send Mira money now and reserve your spot for the next one. A tremendous workshop, thoughtfully orchestrated. The "intense" part of "intensive" was no joke. I just got home and am still processing, and I fully expect this workshop will shape the rest of my life. I gained more than I imagined, the growth was palpable, and I got a whole bunch of new close friends that I already miss -- all powerful beautiful women.... you should know that you should give yourself NO excuses -- SIGN UP NOW for the next one. Mira has created an amazing amazing thing here. A true gift to the art."
Lisa, Berkeley, CA

"This is one of the best dance experiences I have had! I have learnt so much about myself and therefore about me as a dancer/teacher and what I want to give to my audience and my students. The intensive is suitable for people from any background, even if they are very new to belly dance. It will open your eyes in so many different ways. I recommend it to everyone, and it is for that reason that I invited Mira over to teach this intensive in the UK." Hilde Cannoodt, Brighton, UK.

I recently received my long awaited first pair of Melodias through the post from America. As I am very petite, I’ve struggled to find a pair of tribal trousers that aren’t ridiculously long on the length. I managed to find a pair through the Melodia ebay store with a 27inch inseam. Whilst I love these trousers and they do fit on the length just about, I’m a bit concerned that after a little shrinkage they are going to be slightly too short.

For this (very unfortunate) reason I’m trying to find them a new loving home where another petite person can finally have a pair of tribal pants that fit without the time and effort spent to make a pair themselves or have some custom made.

They are BRAND NEW and have only been worn when trying them on to see if they fit. I am not looking to make a profit, I just want to sell them on so I’m not out of pocket and can then buy a pair that are an inch or 2 longer.

This link displays them:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll

So again, they have a 27 inch inseam
Size Small (I’m a UK size 6 and they fit great but there is enough stretch for larger sizes)
Are fringe pants (the fringes are tied on either side to accentuate hip action!)
And are (deep) red in colour

Please get in touch ASAP if you want them, otherwise I’m going to try and send them back to America for an exchange within the next few days. I may be listing them on eBay in the meantime, so get in there quick before they’re snatched up!

I paid $91.72 with postage which was converted to £58.62 for them, plus I had to pay the Royal Mail £16.60 as they were imported from the US. So that’s £75.22, but I’ll round it up to £77 to account for postage. I live in London, so will only post them to people living within the UK and perhaps Europe.

I cannot stress how difficult it has been to find tribal pants with a short inseam, so if you’re also on the small side, get in there quick!!

Contact me at this email address to arrange payment and postage (or if you live in London I can come and meet you in person): m.agathangelou@gmail.com

My name is Field and I studied Egyptian style bellydance for about four years before I discovered ATS bellydance about a year and a half ago. It has become quite a passion of mine and I also perform with an ATS student troupe at events in the Toronto area. I have been sewing for many years so I am quite enthusiastic about the costuming aspect of the dance. I love to travel and I am interested in connecting with other dancers from all over. I'm thrilled that ATS has traveled to all parts of the world, too.
Last fall I had a brilliant idea which would combine my two loves. I began planning an ATS Dance Holiday in Marrakech, Morocco which I am hosting along with my instructor Valizan. So if anyone out there would like to study ATS while experiencing an exotic foreign land, please join us! It is open to all levels of ATS dancers. Please follow the link on my profile page or look for the event listing. Email me if you have any questions, or send me a friend request; since I am new to Tribe.net I don't have many friends here yet!
Best regards,

Strap-on your jet-packs. In this workshop you'll get the skinny on what happens when you let off a lot of steam while dancing really good, really fast. You'll learn and drill two original combos snatched directly from the Hot Pot Studio tribal vocabulary, both equipped for improv and ready for show. You will have fun. You will sweat. You will be inspired. And after class when you're sore and on the floor, remember, "Horsepower" is defined as work done over time. We just teach you the tricks.

2.30-4.30pm: there is only one way to find out...

Show up to this dance party and learn Sigil's most current ideas ready to be shared. What will she infect the world of dance with next? How do you know it will be what you need? Well, if you don't want to be out of the loop, if you want to learn some Sigil style in a whole new way, then come experience this new spin on things. Not only will it be a blast, it will give you another piece of her craft. As you walk away...and people ask, you will be able to say, "There's only one way to find out!"

Sunday 15 March 2009

11am-1pm: UNMATA 110%

No belly dance fusion enthusiast ever drowned from sweat, and to train like the UNMATA grrrls, you've got to be willing to get down and get wet. After this rigorous workshop you'll walk away with two of Amy Sigil’s signature combos, broken down into movement components, boot-laced together, and drilled ‘til you’re ready to drop. Be prepared to tap into your hidden reserves of strength and sass as you take on this class. Warning: 110% is not for paper dolls. And yes, the music will be very, very loud.

1.45-3.45pm: Overlaying Isolations

Amy’s Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate to advanced belly dance workshop designed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results. Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop the awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA.

4-6pm: Sigil School

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the teaching format of Amy Sigil in this interactive split session with UNMATA. In the first half of class, Amy will share her experience, ideas, and dance doctrine as well as answer your questions. In the second half of class, you will get on your feet for a Sigil School whirlwind demonstration. Tag words: warm-ups, transitions, music, mixes, tempo, choreography, common vocab, work, craft, drill, team, time, counting, working backwards, notes, repetition, fellowship, and yes, you will sweat!

You have more than likely all seen videos of FatChanceBellyDance performing to their music and have probably danced to their music too. I am very excited to tell those of you who don't yet know, that you now have the opportunity to study with them too! Helm will be teaching a one off workshop in London on Saturday the 10th January.

About Helm:
Several decades of experience playing for Middle Eastern dancers (Mark Bell was the main drummer for Balanat in 1972), and Ling Shien's extensive studies in Oriental and Folkloric Dance, have shaped Helm's unique teaching style, bringing mind, body, and soul into the music and dance experience. In collaboration with Carolena Nericcio, originator of American Tribal Style Belly Dance, Helm has established a list of common musical terms and concepts to facilitate communication between dancers and musicians.

In this Workshop traditional steps will be used to convey the various rhythms to the body, and choreographies will then connect these rhythm patterns and steps to a specific melody line. Both dance technique and musical vocabulary will be covered. The first part of the workshop will be divided into the drummers (and dancers who want to drum!) working with Mark Bell, whilst Ling Shien works with the rest of the dancers. Everyone will work together on one of Helm's own tunes, in the second part of the workshop. Please note: This workshop is open to both dancers and musicians.

Date: Saturday the 10th January
Times: 12-3:30pm (with a short break half way through)
Where: The Factory, London

Please message me on Tribe or send an email to: moiraiphilippa (at) gmail (dot) com to secure your place.

Helm will not be teaching anywhere else in the UK and spaces are limited, so don't delay!

Hey, I'm looking for beginner classes in tribal fusion bellydance - I'm currently located in Enfield (north London), but am willing to travel a bit for lessons (have travelled to a few Egyptian bellydance classes held at the Synergy Centre in Oval). I'll be attending a 5 week course ending in February, but would like to find a permanent class to continue with after that.

p.s. I'll be attending one of Samantha Hasthorpe's workshops at Tribalondon in January, so it would be great to meet some people based around London there :)

Any general news of workshops or events in or around London relating to tribal fusion would be much appreciated!

i might be moving to London-area next spring, and i will of course have to continue dancing.
i am working on a career in fitness also (class instruction, personal training, fitness therapy) and i would also like to be able to teach Tribal BD eventually.
the question is: what sort of standard, recognised certification can be achieved to do this?
each teacher and/or school has their own programme, and good though they are they unfortunately not rated by any certifying body [as far as i know] : ISTD, REPS, etc... (wtih REPS you get general fitness, and ISTD even does 'Greek Dance' - but no BD!)
does anyone out there, know of any way some sort of empirical, certifiable study of BD can be done?
(what i am thinking, is to get the Group Fitness Instructor (aerobics) and then go for the ISTD 'Natural Movement' option. All the while, studying with a really great teacher that offers her own brand (literally!) of teacher-training, and go from there. i should be ready to teach in about.... three, four years! :)
is anyone else working on anything similar?

Im not sure if this topic has already been posted, but I had a quick look and couldn't find what I was looking for. I've just moved to London, and living in Soho and I'm desperate to get back dancing again as soon as I can! I'm looking for a place that teaches Tribal, and Tribal fusion, hopefuly somewhere close to Soho so I don't have to travel too far because my work isn't very felexable with hours, and it might be cutting it fine, getting from work to dancing.

Um so yeah if anyone can help with the name of a place, or a website so I can check out class times, I would really appreciate it! :)
THE ANCIENT ART OF BELLY DANCE WITH A MODERN VISION
Lifelong dancer Hilde Cannoodt has created a unique style over the years. Incorporating her experience in a rich variety of dance styles from Street Dance through Belly Dance to Flamenco and Tribal Dance, she has created a hybrid style where East meets West. Hilde is a choreographer, instructor, founder of Masmoudi and performs regularly all over the UK and even Europe. Current members of the Masmoudi dance theatre are some of her most advanced students, who have all learned with her for years. Masmoudi will perform a modern fusion of this ancient dance, together with solo performances of Hilde and guest performance by the London based Moirai tribal dance troupe.
