Sashi and I will be heading to London after Gothla UK (July 21st-24th) - mainly for a bit of down time/exploring, but we could do a weeknight workshop one evening (and/or private lessons) - as we both have many other workshop offerings than what we're doing at Gothla UK...so if you're interested in working with us to sponsor a workshop or more info on private lessons, drop me a msg or email.

Hello everyone!

In my haste to make it to my open stage slot, I forgot to hand my camera to my lovely assistant, and so managed not to take home any video of my performance. :(

On the bright side, there were some people filming, so I'm hoping that one of those people might be on Tribe and will get in touch. If it helps, I performed around 1:30pm on Saturday.

If you have the footage, please get in touch! Hope all is well with you!

It's a bit short notice but.... Daphne Pena's show, The Bellydance Diaries, hits London 11th June at the Arcola Theatre, 27 Arcola St, London, E8 2DJ (www.arcolatheatre.com) 020 7503-1646

It's part of a two week Turkish themed festival, Orient Express II.
The programme says: After two years of critically acclaimed sold-out shows across the UK, the new hit dance drama about the secret lives of Egyptian belly dancers arrives at Arcola with Daphne Pena and live Arabic music.

Daphne said: "Please come and support the show so that we can launch a longer London run. The live musicians are absolutely amazing and our show just came out of a sell out run at the Brighton Fringe Festival. There will be a live music jam after the show."

The workshop will explore the different Berber dance styles of Algeria including the legendary dancers of the Ouled Nail.

The strength, beauty and dignity that goes along with this dance means to me more than anything in the world”.

I came across a bunch of great quotes related to dance recently, and thought I'd share them here.

"Dance first. Think later. It's the natural order."
--Samuel Beckett

"When I dance, I cannot judge, I cannot hate, I cannot separate myself from life. I can only be joyful and whole, that is why I dance."
--Hans Bos

"There are short-cuts to happiness, and dancing is one of them."

2 last minute tickets for Rachel/Mardi Paris this saturday

I have two tickets for the Rachel and Mardi show in Paris this saturday,
but it's looking like I can't get there as am recovering too slowly from
a horrible chest infection.

I missed Rachel at Raqs B as my cat was ill.
Can't believe I might miss her again this year - I don't fly, so this
was a much looked forward to rare opportunity to finally see her live.
*sighs, and tries not to cough*

please pm me if you might be able to jump on a eurostar on saturday
and make use of the tickets, I won't be give up on the trip til
Friday evening or even very first thing Saturday...but if someone
can put up with a last minute decision they can have the tickets

Well, I can't believe I have to do this. I've never had to re-sale my tickets frantically at the last minute, but here goes.

Due to my school (it's the always the ones nearest to you that do you in, isn't it?) changing crucial deadlines, I have been forced to cancel my trip to Raqs this year.

If ANYONE WANTS RAQS BRITANNIA TICKETS,DINNERS, EVENTS FOR TWO OR ONE PERSONS PLEASE EMAIL ME ASAP!

I realize the probability of this is probably low, but please, let's make a deal or something. I'm American, and converting these British pounds into dollars is really awful for me.

I was informed that I could sell the tickets, and notify 'Jesse Stanbridge'.

Barefoot's Tribal Vibe and other events

Thanks to all of you who have enquired about Barefoot’s Tribal Vibe in Aylesbury and other Barefoot events. Info is now on its way to you or on the website www.barefootbellydance.co.uk

There has been some confusion with people asking us about the Barefoot Festival/Goddess Camp in Leicestershire – this is not a Barefoot Bellydance event and we are not teaching or performing there.

We have lots of other Barefoot Bellydance events coming up – our next is at Chippenham Folk Festival from 23rd-26th May, where we are teaching three workshops, and performing both in the arena and streets over the weekend. Hope to see some of you there – do come and say hello!

Further details of Barefoot Bellydance’s forthcoming events will appear here soon, but if you have any enquiries do email Steffi on
Barefootsteffi@hotmail.com

Sword Ban, e-petition, please sign

Hi we now have a petition to support dancers having access to buy swords, thanks to Lee. petitions.pm.gov.uk/BellyDanceSwords/

Here is the email I have sent to everyone in my address book:-

Hi can you please forward this to as many people you know and ask if they would sign this petition, even if you are not a bellydancer, please take time to support thoses who are:-

petitions.pm.gov.uk/BellyDanceSwords/

Hello all.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to the home office who has confirmed that belly and tribal dancers in the UK are included in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to voice our concern and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to sign the e-petition to request that the government make bellydancers and tribal dancers exempt from the VCR Bill. It will take a huge volume of dancers and people who support dance to sign the petition and make a difference, so please take the time to sign the petition and support us dancers.

Hello all.

Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.
Weekly ATS classes with Moirai

Please note that as of this week our classes will no longer be held at the Islington Arts Factory. Instead, we will be teaching at the Jacky Lansley Dance Research Studio in Shoreditch (nearest tube: Old Street).

For those of you who are interested and haven't yet signed up, we still have a few spaces. This course will provide a thorough foundation in the fundamental principles of tribal belly dance, including posture, movements and isolations, based on the FatChanceBellyDance format. We will review the basic fast and slow movements covered each week, add to your dance vocabulary of moves, drill cues, transitions, formations, zils, and how to improvise within a group. In each class, you will have the opportunity to build core strength and flexibility, as well as develop connections with other dancers in a fun and supportive atmosphere!

If you have any questions or would like to attend, please send an email to: moiraitribal@gmail.com or message us on Tribe.

Happy dancing!

Ki, is a wonderful hostess and couldn't have taken better care of us! Everyone involved with the West Row Community Hall were so good to us and my love and respect goes out to those who travelled so far (and camped out!) to be a part of the day.

Hi everybody!
So, this year The Uzumé is also going, but as we do not have a private airplan jet, we want to ask all of you in the UK:
are you going by car/plain/train? What's the best way? And if by car: is it possible to go together? We all have our drivers licence, we never drove on the other side of the road...hahaha...but we are good drivers!
Many thanx from Tjarda & Renate & Minka

New classes starting on Monday 14th April at the YMCA dance studio in Stockwell 6.30-7.30pm for 6 weeks.

We will be learning core slow and fast moves, learning about posture, cueing moves and improvising together.Lots of fun in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and a chance to practise playing your zils!

We use the fatchancebellydance format which is essential if you want to be able to improvise with your tribal sisters from around the world and is a fantastic grounding for tribal fusion.

Classes are taught by Emily, Kerry, Jo and Gili from Luma tribal belly dance troupe. Having four teachers means we can work in small groups with dancers which will help you to practise and improve your improvisation skills.

Hope to see you there

Hi guys
I desperately need a balanced Scimitar/Sword for belly dancing. Ideally I'd like a Balady Scimitar or a Cas Iberia Scimitar, as I own one similar and am planning to do a 'double sword' workshop. However I'm not fussy!
Does anyone one know of a supplier in the UK that sells them or does anyone want to part with one.
Thanks
Denise

Do you have any suggestions for places to buy Tribal wear from in London? I know that both Spittalfields; Portebello and Camden market all used to have great jewellry; coins and titbits which could be used for costume making, but I haven't been shopping in aeons, so I'm not sure if this is still the case. Does anyone know of any great London Tribal treasure chests/shops???

Technique Building, Body Creativity and Conditioning for the Tribal Fusion Dancer.
Using a variety of movement methods, we will condition and tone the muscles that we rely on most as bellydancers, emphasizing healthy alignment of the spine and joints. After a warm-up and mat session, we will then rock out with technique-focused drills that get the rhythm in our bodies and our blood pumpin! This body-warming class will culminate in fresh dance combinations! All levels are welcome.

After a warm up and short drill session, we’ll integrate Tribal Fusion bellydance moves with some unexpected twists, borrowed from classical dance and beyond. Some experience is great, but adventurous beginners are encouraged to give it a whirl.

Take a full day with Sharon for € 80
Technique Focused Dance Combi's. We will learn and create some fun combinations that can be incorporated into your own repertoire, keeping strong muscular skill and alignment well in hand so the creative juices are free to flow! As we weave our moves into combos, we shall then weave the combos into a choreography to take with us! This class is fun and appropriate for all levels of Tribal-flavored dancer, and those new to Tribal Style are encouraged to give it a try.

Hi I'm an Aussie tribal dancer heading to the UK in May. I'm also a henna artist and will be spending my first week there in Shrewsbury at the TAAB festival. From there I have another 7 weeks in the UK, that's areally long time to go without dancing so I hope to be able to catch up with some of the local tribal dancers while I'm there. I will be spending a bit of time in London/Essex as I have family there. Would love to hear about any tribal sance get togethers or even classes around that I might be able to come along to.

Cheers Heidi

A Challenge:

Right,

The photo album is empty. Well, it might as well be. I'd like to propose a challenge to all the members: Post a pic of youself dancing near a major landmark (I know not all the members live in London, we can play spot the landmark) You don't have to be in full costume, but show off your snake arms, shimmy to the left, shimmy to the right, whatever. You can make it a dance inspired landmark, or something you just think is beautiful. Let's beautify this tribe!

Collaboration with a tribal dancer

Sorry trying this again as the request from my profile page doesn't seem to work...

I've been musing about working on a tribal costume as a project for my degree. It would form a major part of my degree show in June this year. I've been wanting to make a costume for some time but uni work has had to come first. So I thought maybe I should combine the two! I will be making final decisions in the next few days, but thought I would ask if anyone would be interested in working with me to model the costume. You would have to be photogenic/not camera shy as I will need to photograph the costume being worn. If time permits it will not just be the costume but jewellery too and definitely a headdress, so you probably need to have a fairly flamboyant character. Someone with quite a quirky look would be perfect.

Sadly as this is a student project I can't afford to pay you, but if you collaborate with me you will have a set of gorgeous photos to keep. You would ideally live around North London as I am based in Enfield and go to uni in Hatfield.

If you think this might be up your street do let me know - send a pm and I will forward my email. I's a little tentative at the moment as I need to make a decision one way or another - just trying to judge peoples reaction.

Thanks,

and email if you would like to have it through tribe or tcsdance@aol.com
This is a hand made costume. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well. The bra will fit a 32-34 A/B. This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist class recitals, parties, Goth night, belly fusion, photos, and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume.

The bra will fit a 32-34 A/B. The bra is covered in a teal velvet panne' fabric. The bra is trimmed in a brown gimp trim about an inch wide, . Beneath the trim is a row of the tribal metal fringe. At the center of the bra is button ornament with a few dangle. The side panels and the straps are made from the same fabric that covers the bra cups. The bra ties across the back kris- cross with D-rings. The bra straps are 37 inches long.

Venue and workshop details with the winners of TROUPE OF THE YEAR 2007 (Golden Bellydance Awards), Zafira Dance Company, are now confirmed:

Saturday 10th May 2008
Upper Hall, Centre at St Paul's, Hills Road, Cambridge (map and pictures available www.centrestpauls.org.uk)

Lovely sprung wooden floor, but very limited space in the workshops and at the hafla due to the room size.

Zafira's unique style means they are admired in both the USA tribal and middle-eastern dance communities alike.

Workshops:
10am - Midday
Gypsy Spins and Stylings (Signature Workshop)
Explore the distinct Zafira style in this workshop full of gypsy flavour. We will learn combinations using unique gypsy-inspired moves, and play with different spins. £28

1pm - 3pm
Supah Saucy (Dance Company Workshop)
Kicks, spins, long extensions and locks are the signature of Zafira’s current repertoire. This workshop presents some fancy footwork, spins and various. Couple these saucy moves with evocative music and emotion, and you are at the core of Zafira’s “steal-your-heart” style of Belly Dance. £28

3.30pm - 5.30pm
Zafira Choreography
Let Zafira share some of their secrets of choreography creation. In this workshop we will work on stage presence, posture, working with other dancers, and how to make even a simple choreography dynamic. We will work in pairs/small groups to learn a short choreography in this workshop. £28

Performance Hafla
7.30pm
Bazaar - Henna - Zafira Performance - Local Performers - Free Dancing - Bring your own picnic and drink! £10/£8 performers.

Centre at St Paul's is very close to anything you could need! Bars, restaurants, cafes... ten minute's walk from a Travelodge, ten minute's walk from the train station, and ten minute's walk from the centre of Cambridge with more shops than you could ever want!

... as you may or may not know ... I was the official photographer for the event. If I photographed you (and I don't already know who you are) please let me know so I advise you when the photos are available.

If you like them, and want copies, you will need to send me a blank CDR/ DVDR (depending on how many photos there are) and an SAE.

It was wonderful having you all dancing in front of my lens - although I did go to bed on Saturday night with belly-dancers swimming in front of my eyes. Which was fairly perturbing!

As you may know (and indeed, if you don't, why haven't you looked at www.gothla.co.uk yet?) Sashi is teaching at Gothla UK in July. She is looking out for the opportunity to teach in other areas, or offer private lessons, around that time. If you are interested in hosting her, either message me here on Tribe, and I'll put you in touch, or even message Sashi herself.

She doesn't bite. Much.

Going to Tribalondon?

As some of you know - I'll be the official photographer for the event. Therefore I won't be able to do any private work and any photos I take are property of BDSS.

However ... I will be making bookings for shoots at the event. My diary will be hand ... so if you like my work then please approach me and make a booking. I don't bite :)
Here's the work I did at Tribal Unity: www.polstarphotography.com/trib...y.htm

I charge £35 an hour - this includes as many costume changes as you like. I also have access to some wonderful make up artists and body art artists - so if you wanted to do something a bit different then please let me know.
I'm hoping to purchase a studio within the next couple of months - however I do have access to a studio in South East London. I do most of my work outside using available light and am willing to travel if costs are also met.

You can see some testimonials posted on my Tribe page following the Tribal Unity event,

I can't wait to see everyone there - just look out for the crazed girl with cameras slung around her neck!
I'll be popping my head in some of the workshops just to grab a couple of shots - also I'd like to grab some impromtu portraits of people visiting the event - I'll ask you first :) If you want me to take a photo then just ask!

Anyway - enough for now - can't wait to see you all there :)

ps: if you're not going to Tribalondon but would still like to book a shoot please email me: polstarphotography@gmail.com
