Can you knit or crochet leaves?

I've found a project for Burning Man that Im going to crochet some leaves for. I thought some of you might be interested in doing this as well. The project is an art tree with tons and tons of crochet or knit leaves that are not tied off - so participants can unravel them letting the yarns loose in the wind.

The website has more information on the specifics of the leaves and instructions for making both knit and crochet leaves. The creator of this tree is not specific about color of leaf - she will take any color and use them as needed. There is a request to use basic yarns and not ones that shed fibers. Eyelash, Chenille and other specialty yarns ALL shed - the wind just strips off the little fuzzy bits.

The website for the project is: www.pokiedot.com

If you are interested in making a leaf (or a number of them) - I will be happy to collect them and send them all up to San Francisco in one shot. Meaning - I will pay the shipping costs. Otherwise, instructions on where to send the leaves are on the website.

I haven't crocheted for a long time. Just don't seem to finish the last scarves to be done with them.
Then I need to figure out how to finish several baby blankets that I have half-way finished.

i love to crochet and i love to knit... the problem is i only know how to do chain stitch and knit and purl stitches... and all i can make are things that are square and rectangular shaped (i am the queen of the baby blankets, cat cozies and scarves)... patterns confuse me like crazy - i don't understand what's going on there... i'd LOVE to learn to make actual stuff like socks and sweaters and ponchos, etc... are there any LAKC meetings coming up where somebody would be willing to sit down with a big lamer like me and explain what i'm missing? i have a girlfriend who is in the exact same boat as me and we are tired of making scarves!

Hi my name is Laura! I'm a crochet-er, soon to learn the ways of knitting. I'm of the opinion that you can't have too many crafts under the belt. I have a little girl (2.5yrs) who loves to unravel my work and says ever so sweetly 'sorry...sorry mom'.

I wanted to find out the local (within 20 min driving) weekend s'n'b & c groups if any, and if not maybe start one...???

Manly Crocheted Scarves?

Hellooooo! I'm on a scarf crocheting kick lately. I ~finally~ graduated from the single and double crocheting basic things phase to the MUCH cooler-looking scarves. I found a great and easy pattern on the flip side of the Caron Simply Soft Brites label. They are turning out beautiful! But I have a guy in mind who actually wants me to crochet him a scarf. Now he's a burner, so wild colors are great, but I can't see him wearing the lacy pattern that seems to me so feminine. Anyone have a more 'manly' scarf pattern for me to crochet?

I've been struggeling to teach myself out of books and online, but I would love to get involved with a group to share ideas and maybe even master this wonderous skill . hehe. Im living out in the Northridge area, as Im attending CSUN for photojournalism. So if there are any events out this way, I'd love to be a part of them.

March meeting

Well February got away from us. I am going to look for somewhere in the Los Feliz/Hollywood/West Hollywood areas that we can have our March meeting at. That is unless anyone else here would like to host the Meeting. And I will make sure where ever it is it is fairly close to a train station.

I am going to look for casual Coffee shops, Juice shops, and/or Pizza type places. Although we are getting together at dinner time and we will each want to eat something I don't want to set up a place where we wind up getting distracted by eating rather than knitting. I am also going to look for somewhere that won't be too loud from all the other patron/ music noise around us.

I am going to aim for the 3rd week of March. Please let me know the days that work for all of you and if anyone has any suggestions of where they think would be good.

Hello everyone,

I'm learning to knit and I'm hoping that participating in a knitting circle will give me a chance to improve my skills and get to know some fabulous people at the same time. So far I've found two friends who are interested, and I'm opening the invitation to anyone else who would like to join a fun, intimate knitting circle with some hip, progressive-minded people of any knitting skill level (crocheters welcome, too!) We'll be having our first meeting next Monday, Feb. 27th at 7pm in West LA, near La Cienega & Pico. This may not be the regular meeting time or place, I figure that's one of the things we'll discuss at our first circle. Send me a Tribe msg if you're interested, even if you can't make it to the first meeting.

Can we begin a string on this so we know what's local.

Michael Levine's which mostly has fabrics, now has a real nice specialized section of yarns:

Michael Levine, Inc.
919 Maple Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90015
Tel: 213-622-6259

Also, for you Valleyites:

La Knitterie Parisienne is a beautiful shop with tons of yarns and books for you to enjoy. It's in Studio City so it's "barely" in the valley for those that are allergic:

La Knitterie Parisienne
12642 Ventura Blvd.
Studio City, CA 91604
Tel: 818-766-1515

Meeting at coffeehouses and places like that sounds like such a great idea. That way no one is bothered to play host (unless you want to, and then by all means, say the word).

Please state:
1) if you are interested in meeting, because some people may not be but just wish to join here on tribe alone--( which is great as well!)
2) where you live (general area, if you're comfortable saying)
3) which part of L.A. would be most convenient to join in on our little meet-ups.

in the area who knits, crochets, or has interest in either? I'd love to get this tribe growing so that we all can meet and chill out together, learn from one another, or maybe just pick our noses together. So if you know of anyone, or any tribes that might have likeminded individuals, send them on over!

Hi everyone,

I'll be hosting the second lack meeting at my place in Valley Village. My days are much more open in January as I don't start school again until February. So anywhere between Monday and Thursday is fine for me.

I can start it off the first week or second week in January. Please let me know your thoughts on which week and the preferred day.

There was a flyer for it in my yarn package, plus a coupon for an additional $5.00 off of your first purchase of $30.00 or more, just use coupon code DY0905 when placing your order.

Here are some suggestions for times for the first "get-together"

7:00 p.m. - 9:00(ish) p.m.

2nd week of December...
Mon
Wed?
Fri

3rd week of January
Mon
Tue?
Wed?
Thur?
Fri

-----------------

We need to pick the date and quickly.

I believe we have agreed to have the first get together at Kashmir's. (Kashmir... please e-mail us the address/directions).

What "snack" item will you be bringing.

Proposal

*AFTER THE 1ST MEETING*, I propose that we standardize the time and week of the month. Please add your comments here for what works and what doesn't to meet your schedule, and what you think of the following.

My thoughts:
Here on tribe someone steps up to the bat and claims to host the following month's meeting. That month's Host states the locale: either his or her home (or someone else's), or another place such as a coffee house where we can gather.

Meeting times: 7-9pm, unless otherwise stated here in this tribe.

We could state a regular week, such as the *2nd week of each month*, and the month's Host determines weather it be Mon., Tues., Wed., or Thurs. night of that week-- depending on what works for the Host first and foremost, and anyone who gives their input here on tribe, of course.

On that Monthly Meeting Thread, if you have special needs such as transportation, just post and maybe we can all work together and help ya out. The Host can throw out there what sort of goodies might need to be contributed.

Each participant takes it upon themselves to contact the Host with address inquiries if it obviously shouldn't be advertised here on such a public tribe. Otherwise the Host simply posts the locale and directions for us to mapquest it.

How does this sound? 2nd week of each month? Mon.- Thurs. nights from 7-9pm? Hey-- this is just *my* input. The 1st and last week of the months are difficult for my flying schedule, and the 3rd Mon. of each month I have a Long Beach Meeting for Stitches From the Heart.

somewhere to get together???

So does anyone have ideas on where (like a coffee shop or a park or something) in L.A. and when us knit and crochet peeps could get together and share and help and just have fun?

I live in Silverlake; work in Miracle Mile area and honestly, Santa Monica just doesn't work for me. I'm thinking somewhere more central L.A such as Hollywood, West Hollywood, Downtown.

I am think a more informal setting and get together type thing than a "yarn" shop.

I am also thinking it could start out as (just an example) the 3rd Wednesday of each month from say 6:30(ish) to 8:30(ish).

It also doesn't have to be the same place every time... mix it up a little and make it interesting.

Finally, I really don't know L.A. well enough to suggest any places. I lived here as a kid, moved to the Bay Area when I was 14, and just moved back 1 1/2 years ago and sadly have not been out near as much as I should have or would have liked.

Others thoughts?

ok, some i´m in buenos aires, and i´m at an internet cafe. my tribe addiction got the best of me. their economy here is in bad shape. we´re getting 3 to 1 on their peso. so with such affordable prices, are there yarns that are pricey in the u.s. that i should look for over here? I met a lady who was crocheting a sweater for herself today by the casa rosada (pink house, like our white house) and she gave me directions to some yarn shops. should i be buying 100 % cotton? high quality wool? Huh...

Does anybody here have good advice or want together to teach a sister how to knit in the double cirular needle way? I've been hearing it's the new way to avoid using double pointed needles (which I don't use either). So of course the project I really really want to do right now requires them (arm warmers) and although I've been following the online directions, it just doesn't seem right.

Does this group intend to get together for stitch and bitch? Cuz I'd love that!

I'm paying regular, non-sale prices at the Santa Monica Michael's. I'm paying $2.99 per scane for a 7oz. of Caron 'Simply Soft' (100% acrylic). Are there any better places out there that'll beat this price or places with an even better selection of yarns? I'm buying a lot for scarves and baby blankets.
