BDNC National Champion Category Update!

Hello everyone!
On behalf of Lotus Niraja and The NDC, I want to thank you so much for your overwhelmingly positive response toward the new Belly Dance Nationals Competition (BDNC)! We are inspired by all the e-mails, calls and general feelings of goodwill we've received and all the suggestions we've gotten on how we can make this year's event a resounding success.

But, we are full and filling!

The registrations to compete in the BDNC 2009 have been pouring in. Right now, we are excited to find that so many have registered for the National Champion category that we may have to put a cap on it! There is now a waiting list available and registration is on a first-come/first-served basis for the National Champion category!

Please remember that the BDNC offers several exciting categories! Why just go for National Champion when you could go for National Masters Champion, Proptastic Dancer, or National Alternative/Fusion Soloist? Or why not sign up your entire troupe in one of our troupe categories? There are many ways for a dancer to express her/himself in the BDNC - we have made room for all!

SATURDAY
10a.m.: "DRUM SOLO SECRETS"
Sadie is known world wide for her awesome drum solo technique and choreographies. She has been featured on many performance and instructional videos displaying her unique skill. In this workshop Sadie will take you through a series of exercises and drills that will break down ther technique and her drum solo secrets like "Pops" and "Locks" to help you develop sharper more defined isolations necessary for fast drum solo choreographies.

Noon: "DIVA WITHIN"
We all have a stage presence. Does yours say what you want it to? Learn how to own your stage and command an audience. There really are tips and techniques for making this possible. Clearly convey your emotions and set a mood, reach your audience, exchange energy, learn about your most powerful tools for accomplishing these tasks…..like your eyes and your body language! Learn how levels, spatial planes and different areas of the body when focalized, automatically set a feeling.

LUNCH 1p.m to 2 p.m.(On Your Own)

2p.m.: "DRUM SOLO CHOREOGRAPHY"
Experience the full potential of a Drum Solo. Sadie does not skip a beat. Learn how to apply the "Drum Solo Secrets" in one of Sadie's stellar Drum Solo choreographies!

The shimmy is the dancers' fingerprint. No two people will shimmy the same. Are you ready to develop your signature shimmy? This workshop will cover the many variations of shimmies as well as add some exciting layers. It's a great workout and enhances coordination. Shimmy combos or choreography will be taught if time is allotted. Get ready to sweat!

12 - 1 LUNCH (On Your Own)

1-2:30pm: “VEIL CHOREOGRAPHY”
Once you learn how to play with and facilitate the veil, you'll be able to put it all together in a beautiful veil choreography.

2:45 - 4:15pm: "AFRO-BRAZILIAN / SAMBA"
Brazilian Samba is one of Sadie and Kaya's most requested classes and workshops. This workshop will break down some of the most popular moves and foot patterns in the Samba noPe`, the soloist dance seen at Rio's Carnaval and in many night clubs in Brazil, as well as many of the traditional Afro-Brazilian movements and add them together in exciting choreography or short combinations. Get ready to have a great time, burn some serious calories and add some spice to your dance vocabulary.

Happy New Year to everyone! We hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday season. With the New Year upon us, I want to take the time to say thank you to our students and fans for supporting us though out the year. And whatta’ year it was!

Currently, we are sitting around ye ole’ laptop loading up some 2007 photo highlights of our dance year. To see more of our favorite photos, visit our Gallery at www.lotusniraja.com. We had a great performance year and 2008 is starting off just as busy. The NDC is in the midst of working on something special for 2008, so stay tuned

Workshops - I will be in several areas of the US this year teaching and for performances. I am still nailing down dates for some of you. Sometimes it takes a little time to get contracts signed! ;) I hope I get to see some of you. So far, I will be in CA and NM. I will also be teaching in Washington, D.C. and several areas in Southern and Baltimore MD. I will be in Santa Fe and Chicago for private dance events, so if you would like to catch me there, email me.

Classes begin at The Promenade January 21st, so please make sure you are registered in advance. I am unable to hold slots due to the number of pre-registrants and space allotted.

I and each member of The NDC want to take a moment to thank everyone for their continued involvement and blessings in 2007 and into 2008. Bellydancing is hard work, and somebody’s gotta do it!! We hope to continue to work hard and bring to you our best.

Hello everyone!

I hope you all have enjoyed your small break and are having a great summer! It is Bellydance Class time again! You all have been very eager to have classes begin again and I am happy to announce that this session will focus on putting movement together and choreography.

The Show? Some of you have expressed a desire to perform in our upcoming November showcase as a group, so this is the session for YOU!

The Level I class begins August 27th at 8 p.m. and ends at 8:45 p.m. Level II will begin on September 10th, 2007.

The last class sold out, so pre-registration is highly recommended! Since the classes are getting full once again, my recommendation is to register sooner - rather than later so that you are not disappointed. We had a very full class the last two semesters!

I want to reach out to everyone who received my first e-mail letter and express my deep apology for the typographical errors.

Available time for me has been limited. It has interfered with my quiet
sit down moments to send off another letter.

I work for a National & International Theatrical local that covers the entire musical spectrum such as Broadway shows, Opera, Ballet, Symphony, Movies, and Industrial Shows, dance companies & all other music events. At times, it keeps me on the move.

I also build for a Designer who designs for smaller theater companies in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I want every dancer to keep a journal each time a club owner discriminates against you for the following reasons:

2008 Intensive workshop in the making;
July 2008

If I get the total response needed, I will give a four day intensive
Work shop and dinner show. There will be surprise teachers plus myself with certificates.
The work shop will be limited. No walk ins. This is the only fair way a certificate can be issued.

Happy New Year and Hello student and dancers! As promised, below is a list of upcoming 2007 workshops.

I will begin booking private lessons beginning January 17th. Current available lesson days are Wednesdays and Fridays in Baltimore 12noon to 6pm. Other days are available and in my private studio, please inquire privately via email.

***Shimmies, Hipwork and Transitions in All One Move!***
This workshop will focus shimmies combined with hip work, locks, pops and accents. Learn to use muscular control to get the most bang for your buck. The Ava Fleming Workshop Weekend

This past weekend, Lotus Niraja and the Niraja Dance Company (NDC) hosted a workshop weekend with the incomparable Ava Fleming of Phoenix, AZ. The weekend began with a meet-and-greet on Friday evening, held in the lounge area of the lovely Embassy Suites Hotel in Linthicum, MD. Dressed in “Shimmilicious” t-shirts (to view and/or purchase, go to www.lotusniraja.com), the new members of the Niraja Dance Company greeted guests and made them feel welcome while we all waited for the arrival of Ava Fleming, our guest of honor and workshop instructor for the weekend. Ava arrived to applause and zagharoot, looking as beautiful in person as she does in her pictures. Guests snacked on hors d’oeuvres and sipped drinks as we all got to know one another, taking a calm moment to prepare for the whirlwind weekend ahead.

Saturday morning, dancers arrived, bright and early, eager to begin. Workshop participants ran the gamut from those who had absolutely no Middle Eastern Dance experience to dancers and teachers like Latifa and Nadirah Nasreen, who are already well-known and greatly experienced. We all stood around, some stretching, others perusing the lovely costumes laid out by the vendors, waiting for Ava to appear. And appear she did, ready to get the weekend started! Saturday’s workshop was focused on the cabaret dancer. Ava offered us techniques designed to help us with our isolations, teach us how to use our muscles to execute a move rather than producing it in a skeletal manner, and gave tips on how to facilitate an exchange of energy with your audience. We even followed along in Ava’s daily ritual of push-ups and squats. We ended the session sore, but immeasurably better dancers.

That evening, folks gathered to see Shimmilicious! the show. All were treated an evening full of awesome bellydance of every kind. Lotus Niraja and the senior members of the Niraja Dance Company – Ameenah, Jahzaal, Sehar, and Yashawini – delighted the audience with their Bollywood rendition to “Shakalaka Baby.” The first half of the show also included Caleena Janay, wearing the coolest python-print and leather costume, dancing a gothic/techno-flavored tribal fusion. She proved why she is a rising star in this area. Brandy, a new NDC affiliate from New York, in her Maryland debut, favored the audience with dance using Isis wings, while wearing the most gorgeous cream-colored bedlah and skirt. Mia Naja, another NDC affiliate member, did more Egyptian and Lebanese stylings, complete with an energetic drum solo. Latifa danced a perky saidi dedicated to her husband, known as “Mr. Latifa.” Shadiyah did a tray dance, showing her incredible flexibility and presence in moves that made the audience gasp. Ava Fleming rounded out the first half with a tribaret performance. She popped and locked and moved in ways that seemed humanly impossible.

In the second half of the show, the audience was treated to other out-of-town guests, Sha’ni of Atlanta and Dameshe of NYC, who was on-hand all weekend, selling the delicious costumes by Sahar Okasha. Naimah, the tall tribal wonder, did a slinky and mesmerizing sword routine. Nadirah Nasreen in her fabulous red costume, zilled her way into the hearts of the audience. In their Baltimore debut, the new members of the Niraja Dance Company – Amartia, Makeda Maysá, Sirena and Thalia – along with two of the new affiliate members – Jewel and Princess Eternal – did a sassy group piece to “El Mashrabia”, with each dancer performing a short solo piece, displaying her personal dance style. And then … Ava Fleming, this time dancing a cabaret routine with veils and a wonderful drum solo in a beautiful green costume. She proved to the entire audience why she was previously given the title of Bellydancer of the Universe. Her movements are precise and intricate. She manages to reel the audience in and hold them in her grasp. One cannot take one’s eyes of her when she is onstage. She is a sight to behold. At the end of the show, Ava and Lotus had a little mutual admiration society where they encouraged the dancers to applaud for the other.

Sunday, Ava gave a treat to all the Baltimore-area tribal dancers who came to her tribal technique workshop. Again, Ava did not teach moves or combinations, but offered the dancers tools to make their performances so much better. The students in the tribal workshop were given an exercise in which they had to learn how to interact with three other dancers to create a “living, moving picture”, if you will, arms and legs and hips moving at the same time, but independently. Ava, in a short lecture before dancing began, explained that, to her, tribal bellydance is about freedom – freedom from traditional rules. She talked about how she got her start in tribal dance – actually, in tribaret dance, which is a mixture between cabaret and tribal – and gave short history of tribal bellydance in America. Workshop participants, particularly dancers who’ve had no previous experience with tribal bellydance, asked questions and tribal and cabaret dancers were able to share a free exchange of ideas. Once again, participants left sore and exhausted, but happy. One can only hope that Ava will be back again … and soon!

I just wanted to drop in and say that the show was great! I loved everyone. Each dancer seam to bring their own flava of belly dance to the stage. Ava was just off the chain! I loved everything she did. The NDC rocked! and the new NDC ya'll girls are on your way keep up the great work!

Ahava takes first place at "Queen of Raqs Sharqi "competition!

Ahava , a beautiful dancer of color in the Bay area, took first place at Little Egypts “Queen of Raqs Sharqi competition”. The competition was judged by Nagwa Fouad, Dr. Mo Gedawwi, and Randa Kamel. First prize was a ticket to Cairo, Egypt for the 2007 Ahlan wa Sahlan festival and a slot to dance in the opening or closing galas. What an honor!!

Topics Include: Continued comprehensive training in Middle Eastern dance technique with an emphasis on correct muscular and skeletal dance moves, a development of stamina and strength and improved posture. Streamlining your dance so your audience will enjoy it more. Stage and musical patterns and structure. Full choreography from beginning to drum solo for you to keep! Finger cymbals: conversation not clang. Adding dynamic movement to combinations, traveling, transitions, and formations. Recognizing the ME rhythms what to do with them! MASTER CLASS insert: Challenging technique and combinations.

Prerequisites: Series I or general knowledge of Middle Eastern dance technique. This is not a beginner class.

"The NDC is holding auditions?"
Yes! Lotus Niraja invites dancers with strong bellydance, contemporary, jazz and ballet technique to try out and become a member of the NDC (Niraja Dance Company). The company is looking for 2 (two) dancers with prominent personality, improvisational skills, and knowledge of modern dance, bellydance technique, and staging experience.

The NDC is a professional dance company whose mission is to preserve and promote the dances of North Africa and the Middle East with a "modern" outlook. Our troupe travels nationally several times a year. With the increasing amount of new projects in the pipeline, we would like to add to our group dynamic!

We perform modern Lebanese and Egyptian belly dance, Raks Sharki, and folkloric dances. We also perform with a strong fusion outlook of American (hip-hop), Asian, Latin, East Indian, and West African dance styles. Dancers should demonstrate strong skills and be able to absorb other cultural dance styles. Must be able to learn and perform choreography quickly.

"I am interested, but what is the audition criteria?"
·Talent and potential as a performer: We are most interested in dancers who show strong performing abilities and a willingness to learn various dance styles.
·Level and quality of training: We are seeking a polished dancer. We are not equipped to train beginner students.
**A reasonable amount of dance experience and/or training.
**Must be comfortable with the stage, must own a passion for dance expression.
**Must be comfortable as a soloist.
**Must be willing to work with a troupe dynamic.
**Must be able to travel or have a flexible schedule.

Zoe has been showcasing her unique take on tribal fusion while on tour with The Bellydance Superstars since the fall of 2005. LOTUS! RaksNGlitter Recap & Rehab Reports...

I'm going to start this by saying there's a gambit of emotions I'm running still (good and bad) from Saturday nite's event, so many in fact that I'll have to break'em down slowly (as I'm sure evry1 else who was there) on Saturday night, but it was a keeper for sure.

Unfortunately, I had to haul ass just as Amirah Ahzar went on, because of the wacked-ass MTA scheduling (more of the Rogers Station Subway than the 44 bus), and missed the NDC and Ava Fleming. :(
But, unlike all the straddlers who skipped out towards the end (some folks making angry comments and slamming the door back on the way out as the night progressed), I did make it thru 33 of the 36 listed performances for the night, a personal record I think for a bd event in this area :)~
No1 could've predicted when they opened up their programs, that there was the possibility that they would be there until Sunday morning. :D
I give credit to all of the dancers and the backstage folks who did their best to move the 2nd half of the program along like clockwork, that allowed every1 to get in a lot (moved a helluva lot smoother than the 1st half). I'll break that down later.

The ''MVP'' (Most Valuable Performer) in my opinion was a lady I think named SEHAR, she cam eon before Antonia and work a dazzling blue/silver trim bra/belt design with a physique that dropped every1's jaws thru the God damn floor. She didn;t perform, she attacked (the dance floor, that is) and popped and locked her way into the hearts of a lot of people, you don;t see polished dancing like that from a newbie. This girl's gonna be headlining in some1's restaurant (assuming she's from the Balty area) very, very soon. Is she 1 of your students? If so, she's a ''living resume'' of your teaching prowess, you can;t put that on a paper reesume and tout it as good!! :)
I wanted to give my nod to her performance, and she's so baby face cute, too. :)~

Who are Your favorite Belly Dance musicians?

One of mine is Phil Thornton in which I'm searching.

He along with Fritz Heede & Micheal Beach (with whom I can find all
over the place) are my three sources for the Best BELLY Dance music
I could or would ever want to hear. That's what I used to use/play
all of the time before I once again (after leaving it for a minute)
am 'back into the Dance'.

This time as many of you know..I have a vested interest beyond the

Lotus Niraja Performance

The 2nd annual "Yalla! A Celebration of Women's Dance"

A benefit concert to raise funds for the Women's Studies Student Scholarship fund at Montgomery College.
Last year's Yalla! concert was absolutely fabulous and received rave reviews from audience members. (The organizers) are pleased that we are able to organize another concert for this year.

Details of the show:

Saturday, Dec. 10.
Showtime: 7:30pm)
At Montgomery College in Rockville, MD.

The show will be held in the Theater Arts Arena (same venue as last year), which has a concert stage.

All proceeds go toward the Women's Studies Student Scholarship fund.

Workshops and Classes with Lotus Niraja 2005-2006

Bellydance Workshops with Lotus Niraja

Get ready to "shimmy down" with Lotus in a series of classes and workshops! We have exciting workshops scheduled for remainder of 2005 and there are more specialty workshops planned throughout 2006!

Although Lotus will be leaving MD, she is scheduled to return between performances. During her sabbatical, she will no longer be teaching beginner and intermediate bellydance classes, but she has turned her focus on the “serious” student and advanced level. The serious student recognizes the value of learning Middle Eastern Dance and its history, rhythms, and dynamics. This student also wants to put the very best on the stage for the audience. In 2006-2007, Lotus’ private mentoring sessions and specialty classes are perfect for those with an interest in performance, advanced choreography, and dance career aspirations).
(Note: After sabbatical, Lotus will return to ongoing classes in her new studio location.)

***Local Sponsored Workshops***
Several area teachers are sponsoring Lotus Niraja in 2006 for workshops. She is one of the instructors at WAMEDA Ethnic Dance workshop in February 2006 and is also scheduled to teach at BOCA Fest May of 2006 in Washington, DC. Jemina (in Rockville) is also bringing Lotus into town in late January and April for advanced/pro level workshops. (fees are based on the workshop event sponsor)

***Lotus Niraja’s Specialty Workshops at The Promenade***
Lotus Niraja will be teaching seasonal dance workshops at the Promenade Dance Sports Facility in Baltimore for the remainder of 2005 and into 2006. The fee for these workshops is $45. (This fee applies only to workshops held at The Promenade.)
