Greetings all!
Major Mallet here to announce that the Black Rock City Long Range Desert Group (BRC-LRDG) is now forming and will offer assistance to the glorious troopers of the Love Army! The BRC-LRDG is a mutant vehicle project in which we will convert a modern pick-up truck to resemble a raiding vehicle used by the original LRDG during the WWII. Of course, we will be replacing the machine guns with high-powered water cannon (40 gal capacity - 60' range). The truck will be painted in desert pink and olive - the original LRDG camouflage pattern but also, paradoxically, the colors of love (the theme of Love Army) and of nature (the theme of Burning Man 2007).
I have conferred with your fearless leader (in person, no less!) and he assures me that the Love Army could use the services of our fine organization. Please check out the "under construction" BRC-LRDG blog and help me come up with some more missions for the vehicle. I am based in Northeast PA and am interested in meeting any other Love Army folks from the area. Looking forward to meeting all of you on the Playa in 2007!

Sun, November 19, 2006 - 9:39 PMSo, any thoughts as to the missions this vehicle could carry out with Love Army? I have posted my ideas here:

I would love to see what other ideas you guys might have.

Thu, November 30, 2006 - 7:16 PMJill - That's the spirit! I might have to make the cannon barrels slightly larger than the 3/8" I was first planning on. Back to the drawing board! -

Sun, January 14, 2007 - 8:43 AMi volunteer to stuff her into the canon.
vehicularily speaking as well.... is that a reasonable word? what would be excellent is to outline the camo in el wire for some night visibility. will the vehicle be out on the town aT night? or is it a daytime car only.? just a question. -

Re: The Long Range Desert Group reporting for duty, Sir!
Mon, January 15, 2007 - 6:51 PMGreetings Brigadier! (Says the Major as he salutes in a Rimmer-like fashion: www.youtube.com/watch
I was planning on lighting the truck for night use. The hood with the official BRC-LRDG logo, the left side with a “LOVE ARMY” in blinking pink and light green and the right side with “APOKILIPTIKA” in pink. I like the juxtaposition of the “We love you” theme of Love Army with “You’re all doomed” from APOKILIPTIKA. Having never worked with el wire before, I don’t know how feasible or practical this all is.
On a separate note – I thought one neat application for the truck would be to tow a trailer decked out as a desert oasis. The trailer could be – wait for it, here it comes – the “Oasis of Love!” We could use the trailer as a platform for any number of missions (providing shade, mobile recruitment, handing out batteries (one of the gifting programs of the LRDG), whatever. I see it as a mobile shade structure with fake palm trees and sofas. I will not be able to build the trailer but if someone wants to build a trailer along this theme, I will tow it around the Playa.
I will not be absolutely certain I will be building the truck until about mid-April. Must make certain the funds are in place before committing to the project. On that note, if any of you are planning on purchasing something from Amazon, please read and bookmark this page:
brclrdg.com/blog/
I am an Amazon affiliate and 4-8% of any purchase you make through this link goes directly to the truck. The best part is that there is no extra cost to you. I would certainly appreciate any purchases you can make in this manner.
That’s the latest from the BRC-LRDG. I would love to hear your thoughts and comments. That’s all for now, MM. -

Tue, January 16, 2007 - 1:02 PMthe only experience i have with el wire is in computer modding - and in my experience it's way to easy to work with.... you can do just about anything but severe right angles. -

Re: The Long Range Desert Group reporting for duty, Sir!
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 6:48 PMThanks for the input luxotek - I thought it was fairly easy to use. Another concern is how it will hold up on the vehicle. It has to survive the transit from the East Coast as well as conditions on the playa. Anyone have any experience with vehicle mounted el wire? -

Re: The Long Range Desert Group reporting for duty, Sir!
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 9:54 PMagain - all i can compare to is modded computers and they don't move at 60+ miles an hour and get pummeled by suicidal bugs (usually)... but i do install stuff in the field that has to handle some extreme conditions... wiring and such that has to handle from 175 to -10 temps and some pretty high winds - and all the art cars and people that had el all over them seemed to do just fine last year at BM
there are nylon quick ties that have a hole in the top of them - you can put a metal screw thru that and secure it pretty well
www.homedepot.com/cmc_uploa...0427_3.jpg as an example - that should get you started...
you should be able to just glue it to the vehicle in some of the more windy areas with some elmer's (water soluble so beware of rain on the way but removable) or epoxy... or jb weld - or super glue... whatever you weapon of adhesive choice is (mine is rtv - silicon based - rain proof but removable with a bit of effort)
as for the el wire - it's pretty tough - i've seen plenty of modded puters get lan gamed a lot and even gigged - baring an accident or any cuts you should be fine as long as you don't leave enough slack for it flap violently in the wind - i would bring some spare lengths to fix any problems that may arise - but then there's always the store in gerlach, they have tons of el - in case of emergency just take the bus into town that day (like 20 bucks iirc)
or there's el tape (www.crazypc.com/products/PC8470.html) - sometimes more pricey but this comes with adhesive backing... same as el wire but thin as paper but not as bendable (iirc) -
in fact at that above website you can find an entire arsenal of 12 volt lighting... should be about ready to go with any 12volt system... ala car - might not be the best prices but will give you a good idea of where to look and what to look for... believe it or not you might get the best prices at online computer stores...
where in the east coast.... if you'r far enough north - i may be able to help with gas money if you stop by and grab me... LOL -

Sat, January 20, 2007 - 6:01 PMLuxotek,
Thanks for the comments - I appreciate the link s you offered. I will bookmark them. TO answer your question - I am in Northeast PA. I will not be driving the truck out to BM - it will be missing the roof, doors and windshield which will, unfortunately, make it illegal to drive on public roads. -

Re: The Long Range Desert Group reporting for duty, Sir!
Sat, January 20, 2007 - 7:24 PMfunny - i've seen plenty of Cj jeeps like that... always thought that was sketchy....
how are you getting it to bm
i'm in chicago - i'm on the way by.... or should be... i dunno.... but whatever - help with gas is help with gas.... LOL
i dunno what my situation is to get there yet - or if i have a camp to stay at or if i'm just parking and setting up camp myself... i'd rather stay in a bigger camp and help with the communal living situation if i could...
worse come to worse - i fly to vegas and grab one of my parents throw away cars and drive in from there.... but then i incur tons of shipping costs to get my BM gear down there too... ACK! i'm glad i started planning early this year... last year i showed up only two weeks after i decided to go...

Re: The Long Range Desert Group reporting for duty, Sir!
Sun, January 21, 2007 - 9:09 AMI have a conference the week prior in California so I am driving out to Reno after the event. I will meet up with one of my college buddies, pick up an RV, get supplies and off I go to BM. I have made arrangements to camp with the doom-filled folks at APOKILIPTIKA and Terminal Village but will spend a lot of time on Love Army missions. Love and Doom - that is my theme for BM 2007.
At least that is the plan for now. -
