I love being the guy that's dancing his ass off in bliss
while everyone's losing their rhythm
drinking alcohol
trying to get to a place where they're far from sober.

mmmm I love dancing

Can-Cannibals Auditions August 9th!! Downtown Oakland!

(I apologize in advance for cross-posting.)
We are looking for a few boys and girls to join our punk/modern can-can troupe called the Can-Cannibals!
Check out our web page: http://cancannibalstroupe.googlepages.com/home

Auditions will be held on Saturday, August 9th from 2pm to about 5pm in Downtown Oakland. Please send me a message for the address.

Must be 18 yrs or older, and be able to make all rehearsals in Oakland!

These are a few things we would like to see of someone who wants to audition:
-We like people who stray away from the norm! (punks, goths, freaks, geeks, radicals & weirdos preferred)
-We like people who are into an underground scene. (we do mostly underground punk shows, and we wouldn't want you to get scared :)
-We like people who are laid back, but reliable (we like our rehearsals and shows to be as smooth running and drama free as possible)
-We want someone who wants to have fun! (we will not consider you if you're not a fun-lover :)
-We want someone who has attitude and charisma that will entrap the audience.

Invite your friends! (Both males and females welcome!)

Please respond with your dance/performance experience, and I will send you the address!

Thanks a lot!
-Vaudie Va-Boom! (director/choreographer)
& The Can-Cannibals!

Music For Dance Or Ritual Theatre Piece

Hello,

I have a track that I recently posted up over at my Myspace page that features heavy beats and super intense chanting. This piece of music would be great for a dance or ritual theatre piece. I would be happy to give it away to someone that would like to use part or all of it for their production.

Please listen all the way through as it changes tempo and pace halfway through.

http://www.myspace.com/dominmatrix

Please email me if you have any questions.

Peace

Menagerie of Twelve, a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses

Malice Dreaming Productions is proud to bring you a retelling of the classic Grimm fairy tale The Twelve Dancing Princesses.

As the clock strikes each hour, witness each ensorcelled princess be forced to dance her own story for her malevolent captor and collector. Night after night, each princess, bound by magic, returns to repeat her performance.

This is no willful excursion of 12 girls to a secret ball. There is no forest of gold and silver-leafed trees. No boats will carry them across a lake to a gilded castle. No princes will accompany them, dancing the night away.

But perhaps there is still one who can set them free.....

Sat, June 14th, 2008
2 shows: 7pm & 9pm

at Studio A Dance
2306 Hyperion Avenue
Los Angeles, CA 90027

7pm show: menagerieoftwelve7pm.eventbrite.com
9pm show: menagerieoftwelve9pm.eventbrite.com

hey, dancers -

Here's a link to a video on YouTube of the Northern California Dance Collective's summer dance camp, made by some SoCal dance camp fans. Check it out, and then register to come to camp! The dates this year are June 13-22. It's 9 days of heaven, like living in a village of dancers, with great vegetarian meals, Kids Camp for the little ones, and an amazing community of people. Prices go up after June 1, so you save money if you register sooner rather than later. You can also check http://ncdcdances.org/ for lots of info and photos from previous camps.

be well,
Kosmos Music & Dance Camp, June 5th-8th,,,

Kosmos Music & Dance Camp
June 5th-8th, 2008
Sonoma County, California

13 Dance teachers, 10 music teachers, and a hell of a time...

Check out the website:

www.kosmoscamp.com

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the natural charm of Camp Cazadero, located just an hour outside Santa Rosa in the rolling hills north of the Russian River among Redwood trees. Aquatic types will enjoy lounging by the pool. All meals are provided by our professional chef, the popular Siam Moeini, and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the open-air amphitheatre, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

Caravajal15 residenza dinamica
International Projects 2008

Orvieto \ Italy
April 25–May 2 / 2008

Nita Little
Restless Peace
A mind in motion and Contact Improvisation experience
Residential project for experienced movers

The American performer Nita Little will be the special guest of our association, first time in Italy as guest artist, for giving the project “Restless Peace”. The intensive workshop with Nita Little is in the calendar of our Residential Projects 2008, and will be from April 25 to May 2, 2008 in the beautiful Etruscan city of Orvieto, in middle Italy.

After the end of the workshop, on May 3rd and 4th, the association will plan also two days with the International Springfest Jam.

The intensive workshop and the Jam will be held both at the headquarters of the cultural Association Caravajal15 residenza dinamica, in the prestigious sixteenth century rooms of the Palazzo Caravajal-Simoncelli, in Orvieto.

Application for registration in the project with Nita Little is open from January 7th. For information and more details write to: info@contactfestival.it, or telephone to +39 0763.341479.

Nita Little
Restless Peace
The urge to move, to go where we have never been, is the soul of our practice in this workshop.
Developing a "home base", a place of personal and creative safety is as important as the journey; how wonderful to be free when you have a home! We learn, how like nomads, we may carry our home with us, even as we track paths in and out of unfamiliar territory.
We focus on developing the mental, emotional, and physical skills that enable dancers to travel creatively. Utilizing a full dance vocabulary, we integrate gestured movement improvisation with contact improvisation and build the skills to consciously weave these two forms.

We investigate “states” of mind / “states” of body as a means to develop and direct creative work in our improvisations. Developing the ability to describe and craft subtle levels of action and experience, we boost our physical potential while increasing our readability. Moving in solo, duet and group forms, we gain compositional tools for structural orientation; like torches, they light the way.

This workshop is developed for experienced movers who wish to pass beyond the threshold of old patterns. The restless human drive that takes us out of comfort, urges us to meet the unfamiliar, to move into, through and with the unknown, is a dance artist’s call. Here, we harness that drive and discover how, moving at the speed of our restless calling, we can find peace.

This class culminates in a creative work for performance at the workshop and at Zipfest08.

Things we will do:
Go deep into the physical philosophy behind contact improvisation.
Learn underlying CI principles that manifest as pathways of action.
Build the tools for safe physical and creative relationships
Discover different spatial orientations: vertical/hierarchical and horizontal/diffuse.
Learn about our temporal orientation and develop tools that modulate time.
Develop the skills to be able to move freely between states of mind.
Deepen our agreements to open to life, to the dance.
Honor peace.
Nita Little has been developing, choreographing, performing and teaching improvisational dance for the past thirty-six years, notably Contact Improvisation, which she helped evolve from its inception with Steve Paxton, Nancy Stark Smith and others.
She collaborated in numerous performing companies introducing Contact Improvisation throughout the United States. She is a master teacher with former students all over the world, who are themselves now master dancers and teachers: Gretchen Spiro, Andrew Harwood, Frey Faust, Scott Wells, Julie Oak, Peter Bingham to name just a few. Through CI she discovered her abiding interest in the evolution of consciousness and the mind body relationship. Since 1981 she has been developing an evolving curriculum called The Mind in Motion, which explores the range of experiential states along the mind-body continuum and reveals principles that define Contact Improvisation as well as other movement forms. This work is informed by her investigation of the mind through work such as hypnotherapy and NeuroLinguistic Programming.

As a performing artist her current work is a mix of both formal and improvisational choreography and scores. While anchored in process, it frequently explores character, story, and concept.

Nita received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in choreography and was on the California Arts Council Touring Program.
The latter award was to her solo dance company, NITA LITTLE DANCE THEATRE, which she began in 1984, continued through 1990, and reinstated as a pickup company in 2000. In 2002 Nita created Playing God, an hour-long dance opera that received funding through the Dance USA /National Endowment for the Arts.

Over the years Nita has been both faculty and guest artist at numerous colleges and universities including New York University, California Institute for the Arts, Texas Christian University, Temple University, Tufts University, Scripps College and UC Santa Barbara.

Nita teaches and performs yearly at national and international dance festivals including ImPulsTanz, Vienna, The Side Step Festival, Helsinki, Kontakt Budapest International Improvisation Festival, the International Contact Festival Freiburg, Germany, the Seattle Festival of Alternative Dance and Improvisation and the West Coast Contact Improvisation Festival, Berkeley California.
She also teaches locally and nationally throughout the year. She lives with her son in Santa Cruz Mountains in California.

As she has pioneered a path in the understanding of the mind/body/spirit relationship, Nita's mission, conscious evolution, has been the backbone of her passion and her practice. Her goal is to see, feel and reveal grace in all its forms and as it exists in the actions of the mind and the body.

i'm a member of Anna Halprin's performance company and she's interested in having a few of us start teaching her Movement Ritual classes in various places in the Bay Area. i'm wondering if anyone knows it there would be interest for this sort of thing in Santa Cruz and where a good place might be to hold classes if so. also, if there's any other places or communities that you think this work would go over well with in the Bay Area, it would be great if you could let me know! thanks!
Bangers and Mash, the band you know from Fezziwig's and PEERS dances.)

Caravajal15 residenza dinamica
Orvieto \ Italy
International Projects 2008

Hello!
We are happy to announce that Simone Forti will be again the guest artist of our residence, for giving her intensive residential workshop “Logomotion Writing Workshop”.
The intensive workshop with Simone Forti is in the ambit of our international projects 2008, and will be from March 8 to 15 2008 in the beautiful Etruscan city of Orvieto, in mid Italy.
The workshop is limited to 16 participants.
The intensive workshop will be held at the headquarters of the cultural Association Caravajal15 residenza dinamica, in the prestigious sixteenth century rooms of the Palazzo Caravajal-Simoncelli.
The fee is 400 euros, which includes also hospitality, reception and meals.
Application for registration is open from October 15th.
For information write to: info@contactfestival.it, or telephone to +39 0763.341479.
Info and texts below.

Simone Forti \ Logomotion Writing Workshop
Intensive residential workshop
8-15 March 2008
maximum 16 participants
7-day workshop, plus one day pause
fee 400 euros (including meals and lodging)
pre-registration: 150 euros

Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.

Jennifer Dunning writes in her 1991 New York Times review: “Simone Forti presented her first dance program in 1960 and has since then had a steadily increasing influence on post-modernist choreographers interested in exploring ‘natural’ or non-formalist movement and dance”.

www.lulu.com/content/1153339

It's a quick read (116 pages, literary fiction).

Description:

Evangeline and The Discarnates aren't always ready for the road but the road is even less prepared for this feral band of subcultural hybrids. Hop on their crazy caravan and experience the fantastic, magical and dysfunctional intrigues of players so strange, seductive and hilarious that you'll almost wish they'd crash on YOUR living room floor. Follow them through scandals, fits of passion, contract offers, death, infidelity, bipolar disorder, kidney donation and the sex industry. If you're just the right kind of "awake and aware", these talented misfits might snatch you up, hustle you into a smelly van and shuttle you off to freedom. Pre-apocalyptic survivalism has never sounded so delirious: this is no ordinary goth band and theirs is like no tour on earth.

Thanks!
Master Class in Teaching Techniques to Children Offered

PLEASE FORWARD TO THE DIRECTOR OF YOUR DANCE SCHOOL, COMPANY OR DANCE DEPARTMENT

Carole Valleskey, former principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, founder and director of the California Dance Institute, an in-school program for low income children, would like to offer to your dance department, school or company a Master Class in the Teaching Techniques of Jacques d’Amboise’s world-renowned National Dance Institute. Workshops given in Los Angeles will run approximately $300. We can negotiate a cost with you if you wish to tailor a longer program for your students or if the travel time is longer than a normal drive around L.A.

California Dance Institute is the newest affiliate of the National Dance Institute (NDI). NDI was founded in 1976 by New York City Ballet principal dancer Jacques d'Amboise in the belief that the arts have a unique power to engage children and motivate them toward excellence. Many people know of the program through the 1983 Academy Award-winning film “He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin’.” Established in 2000, and adhering to the NDI philosophy and methodology, CDI has been working to critical acclaim with thousands of children throughout Los Angeles.

In this innovative Master Class format, students participate in movement classes similar to those taught to children in the CDI program, and are thereby introduced to the extraordinary pedagogy that has won the program such acclaim. The fast paced, high energy, performance-oriented teaching style creates an electric atmosphere for learning. Live pianists accompany all classes.

Following the 50-minute movement session, CDI Director Carole Valleskey engages in Q&A with the students. This is a dynamite opportunity for dance students to assess not only movement skills but also the educational and social goals that CDI pursues for K-12 children via in-school and after-school programs. For dance students who hope or expect to teach dance themselves at some point in their careers, the CDI master class is especially valuable for helping them imagine how skills and goals differ depending on the age groups and cultural groups that they might encounter in their own teaching.

The gains are not limited to dance major students: education majors and other students who enjoy moving as part of their day-to-day experience will be easily able to participate in the Master Class. In addition, if desired, the Q & A portion of the Master Class can include information on how to start a nonprofit organization, and participants interested in pursuing an internship with CDI can speak directly with Valleskey at the close of the class.

Please contact Carole at CValleskey@earthlink.net or Elaine Sokoloff at 323 301-8900 if you are interested in this unique opportunity. A syllabus for the class can be mailed or emailed to you by emailing Elaine Sokoloff with your mailing or emailing address. Her email is: ElaineAS@aol.com For references, you may contact Linda Tomko at UC Riverside: linda.tomko@ucr.edu

In search of a hip-hop dance class...

I have been wanting to work out and get fit for a while now, but I lack the money to join a gym. Also working out on my own (going for walks, doing sit-ups at home, etc) doesn't work for me. I need to do something I enjoy and that will be fun which will also get me in shape.

And I LOVE to dance!!! So...

Online I have seen a few places that offer free beginner classes for various dance styles, but I haven't seen any for hip-hop. I live in San Jose, CA... so if anyone has any suggestions or know of any places that I could go, that would be great. I would go to San Jose, Milpitas, Santa Clara, Campbell, Mountain View or even Palo Alto... but I would prefer something close to home (meaning the San Jose/Milpitas area).

I also have an interest in bellydancing, hula, and salsa, but I think hip-hop will be a good start.

I'd appreciate any help you can give me... and if you know of any places that offer other free dance classes for any other style I've mentioned or you'd think I'd enjoy, go ahead and share those as well.

I'm looking for classes that start after a standard 8a - 5p work day and anytime on the weekends.

Thanks.

Have Goodness!

Seeking talented dance teachers

The California Dance Institute, a non-profit teaching a high-energy dance program in elementary schools in Los Angeles is seeking talented teachers with professional dance experience to teach with us in the 2007-2008 school year beginning this fall.

If you would like to see our teachers at work, we are teaching this summer at Gratt's elementary downtown for LA's BEST after school arts program and would welcome you to come and observe a class in action.

•	Classes are Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
•	Culminating presentation will be on Monday, August 27th at 4:30 p.m.

If interested, please contact us at (323) 301-8900 to make arrangements to attend.

You can find more information about CDI on our website at www.californiadanceinstitute.org.

An affiliate of Jacques d'Amboise's renowned National Dance Institute (NDI), California Dance Insitute (CDI) is an in-school arts education program steeped in the belief that the arts have a unique ability to transform children's lives by engaging children and motivating them to excellence. The 25-year-old NDI program has won educators' hearts worldwide because it delivers consistent, structured arts activities by professional artists who are trained in a clear teaching methodology that achieves results. You may have seen the NDI program featured in the PBS special, "He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin'", which won an Academy Award in 1983.

Directed by former Joffrey Ballet principal dancer, Carole Valleskey, the CDI program consists of weekly dance classes in the schools, prmarily for 3rd-6th grade students. Professional dancers trained in the NDI methodology teach each class, accompanied by a live musician. The focus is not on any particular technique, but on achieving mastery, discipline, self-esteem, and learning the value of teamwork and standards of excellence. The culmination of the 30-week program is a professionally staged performance in which the children display their accomplishments to their families, teachers, schoolmates and the public.

We hope to see you in class!

Sincerely,
Elaine Sokoloff

So does anyone know the type of dance the woman with the long sleeves did in House of Flying Daggers? I've seen it only one other time on a flier for the Chinese New year festival. Anyone have any experience making these kinds of costumes?? Let me know! Thanks!

Ekstatic Dancing Experiences

Anyone here have ekstatic experiences when dancing? I have these often, both dancing alone and with a partner. Sometimes it is like I no longer have a body and have become one with the rhythm and flow of the music and my partner. Sometimes I have wonderfully deep connections with others that transcend my everyday awareness.

The other day I was dancing with a close friend who is very open and we had eye contact the entire dance. I could see right into her innocence and joy, it was very beautiful, and she could also see mine. I was crying and afterwards I went to lie down and I wept tears of release and joy. I could feel my tears flow with a rhythmic movement, a new experience for me. It was very cleansing and I feel different inside now. The feeling has stayed with me.

I am curious if anyone here has had ekstatic dancing experiences that transcend your everday experience and that change you from the inside out. Anyone care to share?

Check out my entries in an online contest hosted by Voice of Dance website for the best dance video.

I have 2 different videos, both excerpts from my works entitled "Amor Perdido" (with Cassie Johnston) and "Is You Is?" (with Andrew Allagree).

Here is the link to the voting page:

And here are the links to the videos on YouTube (not for voting, just for watching):

Dancers Wanted... for Soma Olam Performance Company

Soma Olam (www.somaolam.com), a performance art company based in San Francisco, is looking for 1 female and 1 male performer to fill 2 paid positions starting immediately and continuing through the fall (potentially indefinitely). Pay rate is $250/month with 2 rehearsals (4 hour and 3 hour) per week. We are currently featuring a show called "The Tears of Jelal" and will be touring briefly in late June and early July on the west coast as well as performing at a few west coast festivals in Aug and Sept. We are currently working on new material for the show and are looking for people skilled in dance (modern, contemporary, butoh, ballet, hip hop, etc), capoeira, acrobatics, contact improv, prop manipulation, and aerial dance. All of these skills are a plus and, of course, all are not expected. We are currently in residence at Xenodrome Performance Space located @ 1320 Potrero Ave, San Francisco (in the Mission).

Please message me directly, RA (Rob Dixon), Artistic Director, with any questions or to set up an audition. Please contact soon since these positions may fill up quickly. Visit our web site: www.somaolam.com

Soma Olam offers a unique, "impressionist" style of physical theater. A multimedia performance troupe, we set out to create and explore emotional landscapes through visuals, soundscapes, and performative elements. These elements include aerial arts, stilting, dance, acro-balancing, multi-media projection, abstract lighting, elaborate set design, and special effects.
At the confluence of the personal and the universal, these performance journeys are multi-sensory and participatory. We feel that through the window of the microcosm of human relation, we glimpse into the grander archetypes that govern our world and universe. Since our work uses only sparse language and occasional spoken word, it is not bound by language barriers, therefor keeping open the possibility of touring internationally.

"The Tears of Jelal"

"The heart... is made alive by (one) who gives an outlet to intense feelings.
By so doing the clouds of jelal, the power which gathers with psychic development,
fall in tears as drops of rain,
and the sky of (the) heart is clear,
allowing the soul to shine."
Hazrat Inayat Khan

Join us on a journey into the collective consciousness of humanity. "TEARS OF JELAL..." the story of where we are now, how we got here, and most of all, what it will take to release what we are clinging to and move forward with grace.

Currently a 35 minute performance, Soma Olam sets out to tell an epic tale exploring humanity's experience of love, loss, separation, forgiveness and release. It follows two characters, their guides, and the people of earth on their journey from creation to birth; from connection to separation; from light into shadow; and from shadow into... the unknown. This is a look into what it will take for humankind to evolve into a brighter, more promising future.

I have always wanted to let go of everything and give myself to dancing. When I am in public whether its in a dance class, the club or a party, I get really uncomfortable with people watching me.

I want to me know how do you all get over it and just let go?
