Skirt Care and Feeding

Hello. A question about the care of dance skirts. So far I only have two skirts: a "professional" split satin circle skirt and a 25 yard cotton tiered skirt. When stored in the closet should they be hanging or should they not be allowed to stretch out? Both are relatively new with the circle skirt brand new. Will they actually stretch out hanging? What is the best way to store them?

The circle skirt will stretch in time, but it does take time. I usually hang mine folded over the hanger, so there is less stress on the cloth. Circle skirts stretch because they are cut on the bias. As for your25 yrd skirt it depends on the type of cotton. I have a cotton gauze skirt that streched out but that is do to the weight and the weave of the fabric. If you have a tighter weave you should have less stretch. I also hang this one folded over the hanger. I'm not sure if this is how everybody else does it but I don't perform too often so I have the time to iron out my skirts if I need to.

I'm with Nina on the folded over a hanger for the satin, with my cotton one I have a large tupperware that I store it in, it is pretty damp where I am so that and a few of those water removing packets have been working well. Of course you will want to take them out a few days beefore a performance to chech and see if they need a litttle love from the iorn! :)
