what's up with alll these overlaps? Ther are 3 very incredibly wonderful events happening in AZ (that I know of) for this upcoming weekend. This puts a lot of pressure on the dance community, how are we supposed to pick and choose? what if we want to go to all 3? In my case, I felt so conflicted, that I will just stay home this time; but normally, would go to the one that I heard about first.
Don't people check with other sponsors anymore?
How can you cover your expenses if you don't have the maximum number of people? I ask this in all honesty, if it IS feasible to overlap/conflict, I would like to know how.
And let's face it..... we can try to be loyal to each other and work together, but in the end, there is very little economic loyalty, so if folks sponsor an event just for themselves, in a way, I can see that point.

Re: overlapping of events, yet again
Sun, September 30, 2007 - 11:27 PMHi, Lucy, I sent you a PM earlier. This was brought up in a long discussion on AZ bellydancers a couple months ago:
tribes.tribe.net/arizonabe...f707fe62c0
I'm bummed I can't attend the other event. A lot of my good friends who I work with frequently are tribal dancers and will be vending at that event. However, it looks like both are going to be roaring successes, which is just a testament to the growing dance community. I would love to see a comprehensive BD events calendar that everyone would use to prevent conflicts. Even so, accidents do happen, and October just happens to be a wonderful month in Arizona. I hope whatever people choose to do next weekend that they have a great time. =) -

Re: overlapping of events, yet again
Tue, October 2, 2007 - 1:19 PMAnd unless I am mistaken, There will be a HUGE event in Tucson, with Amar Gamal!!! gasp!! if she (the sponsor)had planned it differently, she could have really had a large crowd, but with everything else going on, what are the chances that a lot of out of towners will attend? the Tucson dance community is not that large to financially hold up a big name like that, in my opinion.
What a shame.. I have wanted to see Amar Gamal for YEARS now, but I got the info a bit late, and just won't be able to make it. I would have loved it.
I got your PM, Elissa.. and I wish great success for ALL the events. Each one is going to be off da hook. -

Re: overlapping of events, yet again
Tue, October 2, 2007 - 3:44 PMHi Lucy, I just wanted to mention that Belly Queen is doing a West Coast tour and this was the day they were passing through Tucson. The lady that is teaching the workshop is a former student of Kathryn Ferguson. She contacted Amita as she was also one of the former volunteers for the AIR program that Amita taught. I agree that it is really too close to Boom Boom, but many of us are signed up for both.
When BDSS came through Tucson last year they contacted me and wanted me to host Petite Jamilla and Isaam. I told them I would try and find a venue as it was only in like a month. I found out that Kami and Isaam were scheduled in Sedona the very next day!!!!! I turned them down. I felt so terrible about it as we never have anyone here. Then after that turmoil the Sedona workshops were cancelled. I do wish there was a way for us each (as in city) could work out something where we could host events. But, there are so many sponsors around now it is hard. I don't see a way for that to work.
I keep trying to bring someone down to Tucson as we haven't had a big workshop here since I brought in Zoe. There is always something going on in this state. It makes it hard for us down here because we have to travel to do everything. I will say that the Zoe workshop was sold out and only about 3 people came from out of town. The Tucson community has really grown in the last couple of years.
Anyways, I felt like sharing my opinion. I don't do that often!! LOL ;o)
I hope that you are doing well, Lucy. You are very missed down here.
Love and hugs,

Re: overlapping of events, yet again
Tue, October 2, 2007 - 4:26 PMWhen I went to Tucson last April for the Issam workshop, it seemed like a huge success. At least, his class was utterly packed. I assumed the other classes had been, as well. Based on that on experience, I got the impression that Tucson must have a huge BD community. I lived there from 1995 to 2001, and I don't remember a dance scene, but at the time I was into a completely different type of drumming. Knowing Tucson, I would think there would be a huge market for cool events like this. It's just a matter of getting the word out. Weren't you one of the organizers of the Issam workshop, Brandye? It was awesome, I had a great time!

Re: overlapping of events, yet again
Wed, October 3, 2007 - 12:20 PMHi, Brandye: I think that if a BDSS workshop is being held elsewhere in AZ,(except in Phoenix Valley) Tucson would still be a great place, and there might not be much of an overlap. I just htink the problem is when a workshop of the same type (like BDSS) occurs in Phoenix and Tucson within a couple of days of each other could be a problem.
I LOVE Tucson for all its workshops and events, and love it when there are big ones going on. And once in a while, we have to take the opportunity when we get it.
I think it's going to be wonderful, you all are going to have a great time, and I wish you lots of success!
