I have to be there from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening to help a vendor there and my ride situation fell through last minute. If you know anyone heading down, please put us in contact- save your friends money and save me a ton of hassle navigating the MA-NJ bus system. I'd also travel up to Providence or anywhere on a commuter rail from Boston as I'd so much rather ride with a dancer than greyhound.

I am writing this to inform local area dancers that a man named Craig Sutton may call you. He owns “Sutton Entertainment” a booking agency that hires belly dancers for corporate events. On 3/30 I did a gig for him, against my gut feelings, and had a terrible experience. I only took the gig after speaking to someone who has worked with him in the past and did not have an issue then.

When I arrived at the restaurant, he was clearly intoxicated and was very touchy-feely. Mind you I had only had several phone conversations with him and this was the first time meeting him. Furthermore, I arrived on time and had to wait past my scheduled performance time because the DJ that was hired for the event didn’t know how to use the sound system. Craig asked me, “So can you just dance to whatever the DJ plays,” in which I told him no because I have a routine worked out to the music I brought with me. My music just started to play out of the blue, with no indication or notice from Craig that the DJ finally figured out the system and I would be going on. During the course of the evening Craig told me that should anyone ask him how to book me for an event I should give them HIS contact information and not my own.

I was promised a decent amount of money for the evening. I still have not received the check for that event, and still have not received a clear answer as to when I would receive it. In fact the reply I received was “You're correct in asking. Technically it would have been the end of last week but unfortunately, "Uncle Sam" got the Lion's share last week!” Apparently I don’t get paid until he gets paid, or can afford to pay me. I have since been told the check would be in the mail tomorrow but we will see.

Moreover, he’s asked me to do another gig for him this week (in which I declined-I am not working for someone when I still haven’t gotten paid for the last gig!)…but he “warned” me that the budget has been cut and I would only be getting paid $125.00 for two 5 minute sets…clearly not worth the hassle since I charge $150 for a 10 minute belly gram!

I am writing this warning now because I have a feeling that he may start trolling around the web (that is how he gets your contact info) to look for another dancer for tomorrow night. Actually I am not even sure if he even does get your name from web because when he initially called and I asked him how he got my name he couldn’t give me a straight answer. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be careful. He’s shady and not very trustworthy and I do regret doing the show that evening, save for the fact that I can warn everyone else.

Workshop Descriptions:

12:30-1:30 9/8 911 - Karsilama Emergency with Nadira Jamal
You've never danced to 9/8 music (karsilama) in your life, but the band starts playing Rompi Rompi. You've seen dancers use skirtwork for karsilama, but you're wearing a straight skirt.

What do you do?

We'll cover the 9/8 rhythm, and how to dance to it with the movements you already know. We'll also cover a couple of typical karsilama movements to help you fake it till you make it. Depending on the class composition and time permitting, we may also cover playing zils to 9/8 music. Participants will receive a short "phrase book" handout, which will also include resources for further karsilama education. Participants do not need to wear full skirts, but should bring zils.
Intended Audience: this workshop is a "how to cope" crash course for the karsilama-illiterate. It is NOT a full education in karsilama, or even a proper introduction. If you have any background in 9/8s, this material probably won't be new to you.

1:45 - 2:45 Tribal Improv with Phoenix Avathar
"Come learn the art of Tribal Improv with Phoenix Avathar! Phoenix captures the art of improv with poise and grace."
Are you a seasoned dancer who has been curious about the technique behind tribal improvisation? Or maybe you are a new dancer just trying to soak in the many styles of bellydance. In this workshop, we will explore the world of tribal improv - a style of bellydance that promotes community and creates a performance in the moment using a basic foundation of bellydance movements and cues.

3:00 - 4:00 Drum Technique with Najmat
During this workshop Najmat will break down the essential building blocks of drum solo moves and combinations including the basics of locks and pops and layering with shimmies. Najmat will give you a baseline for choreographing or improving any drum solo - short or long! Her unique approach to bellydance is not to be missed!

4:15 - 5:15 Unconventional Props: Objects of Expression, Drama, and Power with Aepril Schaile
"Have you see Aepril Schaile bellydance? If you have you know she is a master at bringing odd and unusual props to life on stage! Come learn the secrets behind Aepril's antics!"

The creative possibilities are endless! Traditional belly dance props are used with new energy and meaning, new ideas for props are born out of an image or idea...In this workshop, we will learn to use props not only as tools to showcase technique, and/or as an extension of costuming, but also as theatrical objects infused with signification and symbolic power. Please being your own prop for experimenting with, and Aepril will try to come up with a new way to use it!

Hafla begins at 6pm!!

Featured dancers: Aepril Schaile, Badriya, Ela, Erzulie, Jemileh Nour, Jessi, Lilya, Moirae, Nadira Jamal, Najmat, Nikki, Odalisque, Peridata, Pheraea, Phoenix Avathar, Sabrina, *Samantha*, Shadows and Lights, Zaharah, Zehara Nachash and Zemirah

Dear Fellow Dancers:
Many of you have read this in my blog, but I would like to extend this information to other local area dancers as well.

On Thursday, Feb. 28th, 2008, BostonNow, a FREE newspaper distributed through the Massachusetts area, mainly at train bus stations, listed in their "Nightlife NOW" section (page 12 of 2/28's issue) a small "blurb" about belly dancing at The Middle East on March 2nd.

Here is the exact wording (I saved the page if people want to see it):

MARCH 2:
Belly Dancing
The Middle East Corner, 9 pm
Free. Gyrating women---and you dont even have to hit the ATM for dollar bills first. 472 Mass. Ave. Central Square.

I became very upset after reading this as its feeds into the stearotype of "belly dancers are strippers".....

I emailed and called BostonNow as well as wrote a lengthy blog on their website.

I am encouraging other dancers to do this as well. Whats most disturbing is that this paper is free and being distributed to thousands of people.

We work way to hard to put up with this shit from a crappy wanna be newspaper.

Their website is www.bostonnow.com

You can also call their main office at 617-556-1700 and leave a message with CEO Russel Pergament, Publisher Michael E. Schroeder or Editor John Black.

Also you can write letters to BOSTON NOW, 30 Winter Street, Boston, MA 02108

Thanks.

I will be doing the same thing as last year. Workshops on Saturday , show on Sunday. Unfortunately the woman who ran Roslindale Yoga is no longer the owner, and the new owner is being a bit picky about letting me rent her space for the workshops. I am contacting a local church and am hoping they will let us rent their space for the day of the workshops.
Finding deep spiritual meaning and profound personal expression in this art form, Rose dedicated herself to studying with area professional dancers, and later became a professional performer and instructor.
Rose was an alumna of the Crescent Dancers and Ahmet Luleci's Turkish Folk Troupe Collage International. She emerged as a professional performer in 1996 and later as an inspiring choreographer and instructor of Middle Eastern dance. For more than 10 years, Rose was the artistic director and coordinator of the widely attended and popular Jewel of the Valley Middle Eastern Dance Show and the Anjum&Sahibat dance troupes.
Known as a leading performer and teacher in New England, Rose performed and conducted workshops throughout New England and New Jersey , California and Canada . In addition to teaching the dance, Rose's objective was to help her students gain self-confidence, spiritual strength, and the appreciation of life that dancing provided her, as well as educate audiences about this beautiful art form. In 2003 Rose was nominated for Zaghareet Magazine's Best Kept Secret Award. Later that summer, she was diagnosed with brain cancer. While in remission, she continued to teach and perform, using her dancing to raise money for cancer research.
Rose leaves her loving husband, Greg Superneau, of Southampton; her devoted mother and stepfather, Jackie and Greg Champagne, of Southampton; her father, Francis Demers, of Westfield ; her brother, John Gamble, and sister, Denise Champagne; her grandfather Jack and wife Donna Gamble, several aunts, uncles and cousins, and her newborn nieces Lilliana Rose Marie Mitchell and Mya Rose Faria.
Visiting hours will be at the Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Park St. , Easthampton on Sunday, Feb. 10, from 3 to 8 p.m.
A celebration of Rose's life will be held in the Congregational Church in Southampton , Feb. 16 at 11 a.m., where friends and family are invited to share their memories of Rose.
Memorial gifts may be made to VNA-Hospice of Cooley Dickinson, P.O. Box 329 , Northampton , MA 01061

We are collaborating with Michael Baxter to photograph these 'legends' for posterity during the weekend of March 29 - 30 at the Debora Kerr studio in Jamaica Plain. We will need a helper (possibly 2) to assist during the shoot that weekend - helping with backdrops, makeup, coffee, and general go-fering. There is a stipend of $100 for the weekend, not to mention the opportunity to hang with the 'legends.' There should be some fabulous gossip and story-telling. :-) If you are interested in being part of this event, please email me at info@bellydancenewengland.com at your earliest convenience.

Hafla begins at 6pm!!

Featured dancers: Aepril Schaile, Badriya, Ela, Erzulie, Jemileh Nour, Lilya, Moraei, Nadira Jamal, Najmat, Nikki, Peridata

Ok, ok, I've been posting preview-type 'events' occasionally here, and promising more info, and unfortunately setting up the particulars has been like pulling teeth! But we're almost ready to unveil the big announcement...early next week. But you heard it here first--there's limited space! I will have definite times and more info on the show next week, but if you already know you're interested, you should register pronto! And I should say that while these ladies are probably best known in the tribal world of bellydance, Mira's workshops are for EVERYBODY as her style draws from traditional folkloric dances, cabaret and tribal alike (watch her video below for a taste). Also, Urban Tribal is as much modern dance/hip-hop as it is bellydance (more?)...if you're not familiar with these ladies, you should be--so don't hold back; come and see what all the hype out west in California is about!

In the meantime, here's what I got:

Jan 12th and 13th : 2 workshops each day, and a show saturday night. All held at Green St Studios in Cambridge, MA

Mira’s classes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF7-cc1U4g8

Liquid Arms and Sleek Combos (11am-1pm Sat)
An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the arms and hands, providing the tools essential to learning beautiful arms. Mira will build improvisational combos that will introduce dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the “Tribal Frame” incorporating full body technique and fluid poise.

Shimmies and Layering (2pm-4pm Sun)
An exhilarating and challenging workshop, designed to be accessible to all levels, but to be indispensable to the intermediate and advanced student. This workshop, hailed for its blood pumping drills and mind-bending layering, will lead the students through a step by step approach to 4/4 shimmies, the freeze, and the techniques of layering shimmies and isolation.

Urban Tribal’s classes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdJrfxRj8O8

Fast and Funky (Sat)
Urban Tribal is known for their innovative approach to fusion. Through movement drills and combination break down, Heather will share the Urban Tribal approach to rhythmic choreographies.

Slow and Slinky (Sun)
Through drills and choreography students will learn the secrets to the fluidity and control of Urban Tribal's liquid stylings. If you would like to take advantage of the floorwork option, please bring kneepads.
I have just joined this tribe to network with other dancers in the Boston/Cambridge area. I recently had the opportunity for a performance, and loved dancing for the MA croud at Mass.Morgue this year.
I would love to start meeting other dancers, and perhaps a few friends, south of my state. I am also posting a couple good shots that were taken at the show.
Feel free to message me to say hi!

Idea for a Boston Chapter NBDA event...need feedback

Hi everyone,

I was sitting here, trying to think outside of the box about an Boston Chapter NBDA event we could throw and this idea came to me.

I don't normally like belly dance contests but what if the Boston Chapter of the NBDA did a Charity "People's Choice of Boston" belly dance contest? A contest where there are no judges but you got a numbered ballot for your admission, to fill out and turn in. Then the votes would be tallied and prizes awarded. Of course, it might not be fair, dancers could fill the audience with people that love them, but at $15 or $20 per ticket, it could make a lot of money for charity. It also might be an event that publicizes well. The contest could have lots and lots of fun categories and be broken up into student, new professional, seasoned professional and troupe categories. The focus would be on fun, with enough categories to make everyone a "winner".

To be a contestant, you would have to be or sign up to be an NBDA member, any chapter.

This contest could include a workshop beforehand, maybe with the "star" workshop instructor doing their show while the votes are being tallied? The "star" workshop instructor could be an NBDA member outside the Boston Chapter or it could be a "star" we hire from out of the Northeast. Jemileh had this idea: An incentive and a way to build on it for future events: Open to all NBDA Chapters, and the winner of the pro category could be the guest instructor at the following year's competition.

So:
Do you like the idea?
If it's for a charity, which one?
Would you "compete"?
Would you invite your students to "compete"?
If you aren't an NBDA member, would you join to participate? (Membership is $20 for two years)
If we held a workshop beforehand, would you want an NBDA member to teach it or an instructor from outside the Northeast?
Is Davis Square, Somerville, MA a good location for you? (It's right on the Red Line and has free parking.)
Would you prefer a Saturday or a Sunday in February/March?

We've had to cancel two events recently, so I'm trying to help brainstorm an event idea that doesn't compete with other events, like "Shimmies for a Cure" and brings in a lot of people.

Your feedback (negative or postive) will be greatly appreciated!
