Just finished this yesterday. It is the first in the Dark Tower series. Nicely cryptic. I can't wait to see how it all pans out over the seven books! Cowboys, zombies, magic, legends, flashbacks, demons, good good stuff. It is the story of Roland, the last of the Gunslingers and his quest to find the man in black. There is so much rich history of another world that seems like it might be an post apocalyptic version of our world...only hundreds of years in the future. No technology exits...well I should say it doesn't work. Strange creatures roam the lands. Other worlds exist.....or so it is foretold....

If any of you guys have read this series, please don't post spoilers from the other books. Feel free to post the other titles or a Dark Tower post by its self! Thanks!

It's been a while since I read this series. You're making me want to reread it. LOL No spoilers, though. I promise.

I tried to read it about ten years ago. I got through two of the books...possibly part way through three which was all that was out then...and put it down. I wasn't impressed with it. This time I think I am catching more things and am loving all the LOSTlike intrigue! Although I am having to take a break between the books. I've found that I can't read the same author's books one after the other. I get bored with the writing.

I've been off line due to health issues, and I just started reading this series again. I **love** it. Like the HP books, I read them through the first time reeeaaally fast, so I'm picking up a lot more this time.

When you know what's going to happen, it's amazing to go back and see JUST how many details were included that foreshadow later events; details that slip your mind later.

With all the schlock books King cranked out while heavy into his drink/drug phase, it's easy to forget what a great writer he really is. And if you don't care for horror stories, I suggest you pick this one up - inspired by equal parts of LOTR, Browning's "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came", and Sergio Leone's "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly", you won't regret it.

the other good non-horror king is "the eyes of the dragon", which he wrote in response to his then-13-yo daughter's question "why do you only write scary books, daddy?"

i've never read the dark tower series, but apparently this book sort of started them all because the evildoer is a magician named Flagg. and there's a king peter. my dad told me these elements are in that series. p'raps i should read it....

Actually, this is a book that he started waaaaay back in college; in the paperback version that I have, there is a huge introduction with the backstory in it. It took him 17 years to finish it, in between other books.

I'm reading "Wizard and Glass" (Dark Tower IV) right now, and they're in the middle of a world that is probably the one in The Stand ... the references are there, but not so much that you'll feel you're missing anything if you haven't read that one.

There are references to other people's work, too; one of the weapons towards the end of the series is a ball, who's box has a label on it declaring it a Snitch ....

It's even more amazing when you go back after reading this series and see just how much his other books reference it. Even when he was writing his other stories he never got away from this one.

Listen you! No talking about other sequels to this one in this thread!!! I'll let it slip this time, but not again. you will be punished severely!!!! Oh wait. You'd like that wouldn't you! haha!

Feel free to start a thread for the other books. I'm on Wastelands right now (number 3 for those not in the know)! I'm also reading Emma by jane Austen as I've been reading to many dark books lately and need to break it up a bit! (-:
