I've never seen the movie, and didn't even know this was a book until I ran across a copy in a discount book store. It took me a while to start to get into the story and I almost gave up. I'm glad I didn't. As it turned out, this was worth the effort to get going with it. I thought it was funny most of the time, but serious where it had to be. I stayed up pretty late last night just to finish it. Now I'll have to go and see if I can find a copy of the film and check that out as well.

do NOT i repeat do NOT watch the movie.

john cusack is perfect. kevin spacey is perfect. the setting is amazing. the music is cool.

the. movie. is. an. AWFUL ADAPTATION.

i was so angry after watching it. i read the book when it first came out and loved, loved, LOVED it. when i heard my favorite actor was starring in it, i was like, "ooooh.... john cusack in a great book movie! awesome!"

    yeah, not so much.

okay, watch the movie so you can at least see what the town is like and the drag queen and all that. it makes me actually want to visit georgia.

    but consider yourself warned, darling.

has anyone read the other john berendt, that city of falling angels? i'm scared, because i heard it wasn't very good.

I really liked this book. The movie didn't bother me because it really showed the city which was very cool. I agree, K, one of the best things about the film was The Lady Chablis. I love drag queens. I even went out and bought her book. I haven't read any other Berendt books, though. My Midnight is a signed hard cover first edition. Well, because of this book, Savannah is on my southern states tour, if I ever go on one, along with graceland, loretta lynn's ranch, the grand ole opry, and uh.. i guess that is it for now.
