I have had a strong connection with Tara and her mantra "Om tare tuttare ture soha" for many years. I have always felt supported by the mantra and images of Tara come to me as unexpected gifts from people. However, whenever I do a concentrated mantra practice (i.e. for 40 days), I start to get sick or my chronic back pain flares up. Once I couldn't move my head, my neck went so stiff after chanting the Tara mantra for an hour a day for two days. At first I thought that I was not in a good karmic condition to receive the mantra so I would switch to other mantras to purify. I recently attempted another 40 day practice with the Tara mantra and now am in pain throughout my entire body. Has anyone had any experience similar to this? Does anyone have any suggestions? The swamis I study with tell me to just drop it and practice another mantra but I am very curious to know if anyone else has experienced this. Also I am extremely drawn to Tara...it seems a shame to "just drop it"...

Re: tara mantra
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 11:27 AMI had an experience about ten years ago where i would chant that mantra for an hour daily. i was very angry at someone over a relationship that didn't work out. one day while i was chanting this rage toward the guy started coming up and wouldn't go away. i was thinking this was very bad to be feeling so angry while chanting a mantra but it kept coming and i was getting angrier and angrier. finally i decided to let it come thinking this was some kind of cleansing. I had thethought that if i saw the guy i would give him a black eye. Then i thought no i'll give him two black eyes!! And right when i thought that, even though i was seated, my body lurched forward and i banged my eye socket on the woodedn arm of a chair in front of me off to the side. my eye started turning purple and i had an audition the next day which i had to go to with a blck eye. I swear this is true. it was a very powerful lesson for me.

Re: tara mantra
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 5:59 PMThanks, Prabuddh. It's good to know that someone else also had a volatile experience with this mantra. If you don't mind my asking, what was the lesson for you? And did you continue to chant this mantra in spite of the rage and the black eye? How did it turn out...did the rage eventually resolve itself through chanting?
I am experimenting with grounding the Tara energy by chanting Om namah sivaya afterwards...that seems to alleviate the pain though I am exhausted...I also wonder why this phenonmenon is not ever talked about among Tara devotees...the emphasis seems always to be on her compassion and rescue work which are there, for sure, but she can sure take you for a wild ride. -

Re: tara mantra
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 10:28 AMI think the lesson was about controlling my thought process and how fast negative thoughts can boomerang back on us. i did continue to chant the mantra for some time after that. -

Re: tara mantra, a Buddhist spiritual doctor responds
Mon, January 21, 2008 - 2:52 PM
Namaste.
Tara Devi is one of my friends, teachers, and also my sponsor as a Buddhist guru.
No harm can come from this mantra. It is entirely benign. I could recite it 3 hours straight - or for that matter recite a huge stack of wrathful protector mantras for 8 hours and there would be no negative repercussion, just clarity and sharpness and a pure energetic field.
You have not given enough information to allow me to respond in detail. I do not know if you have Mahayana vows, or a full Tara empowerment, or something generic like a full Vajrasattva empowerment.
Vajrasattva / Hundred Syllable mantra is the primary deity/ recitation for purification and removal of obstacles. ( See the photo and text for Hundred Syllable mantra at my tribe listing under "K T" ). I realize that this may not seem too attractive to a lesbian, but there are Tara versions of the Hundred Syllable mantra.
There are many streams and variations of Tara practice. I received many of the principal Tara practices, such as the Gelugpa school Cittamani Tara, the Sakya School Ekajati Tara ( 4x ), Sakya White Tara, Atiyoga Ekajati Tara, different kinds of Tara Yeshe Tsogyel ( Dudjom, Longchen Nyingtik, Tagsham ), Tara Mandarava, Three Long Life Deity Tara, Three Streams Atiyoga White Tara, Atiyoga Red Tara / Hayagriva and so forth.
Tara is a key practice for many reasons, and it works well for Hindus, Western witches, Hindu Buddhists, Witchy Buddhists, and so forth. It is both a very simple practice and it can incorporate the highest levels of Buddhist yoga, if one has the appropriate empowerment.
It has many applications in outer magical workings.
I have never heard of anyone having any problem with this mantra, not in the last twenty seven years.
You will need to do acupuncture and some yoga or tai chi practices to work out problems related to your energy anatomy.
You can take Buddhist empowerments to cleanse obstacles to mantra practice. I continue to do so, even having sixty two full Vajrasattva class empowerments.
It is guaranteed that any "reaction" to Tara practice is the PURIFICATION, *not* the compounding, of karmic problems. Nevertheless, there are inner and physical obstacles to understand and work through.
Break up your mantra sessions to be shorter and more numerous. Try fifteen to twenty minute sessions twice a day, with yogic stretching beforehand.
You have to do other things right to support a spiritual practice, and that includes fresh healthy food, good rest, fresh air, and a harmonious environment ( where possible ).
The physical suffering you face could be a manifestation of an inner conflict, but you will have to decide that.
Please be sure to see a good acupuncture doctor soon. You may well need to take a Vajrasattva class empowerment, or several. The female aspect of Vajrsattva is Vajragarvi, so you can practice Vajragarvi as the central visualization, with or without the male aspect Vajrasattva.
Best,
K T, inner medical tantrika and dagger priest

Re: tara mantra, a Buddhist spiritual doctor responds
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 6:30 PMnamaste K T
thank you for your encouraging and thorough response. i actually started an acupuncture treatment recently and i hope that will help with the energy blockages. i do also practice hatha yoga but not as regularly as i should...i will now be sure to do yoga before chanting.
i have taken the Mahayana vow but not the Tara empowerment...i have had two tantric empowerments so far : Medicine Buddha and three-in-one Vajrapani/Hayagrava/Garuda...every time i try to get to a Tara empowerment or even a weekly Tara puja, something obstructs it so i have taken that as a message that i am not yet ready. you highly recommend a Vajrasattva empowerment...i will keep my eyes open for an opportunity to receive one...in the meantime, could i use "om namah sivaya" or the Gayatri mantra or the Medicine Buddha or the Vajrapani mantra to purify myself?
om tara
