Alice goes through the looking glass and falls down the rabbit hole into a strange world.
Lewis Carroll's Alice books remain to this day my favorite children's stories of all time. They are also, to my mind, almost unfilmable. Part of the reason is that, despite the many memorable fantastic images present in the stories (the Tenniel illustrations are indelible), the stories are largely driven by a contortionistic verbal illogic that really can only be appreciated by those with a sense of mathematical absurdity. About the only director I would trust with this work is Terry Gilliam, whose years with Monty Python would put him in good stead to take on the absurdity of the work.
As it is, this version is more of curiosity than anything else; it has a plethora of Hollywood stars in costumes that disguise their features (Cary Grant, W.C. Fields, Gary Cooper and Edward Everett Horton are only the most well-known of the bunch), and it has some very nice special effects throughout. It also more or less takes a real stab at being somewhat faithful to the work, with most of the dialogue directly from the stories. What it lacks is real energy and a grasp of the spirit of the whole thing; it feels mannered and perfunctory, cranking out some of the better-remembered moments without ever achieving the sense of absurdist flow necessary to bring the whole thing to life. Nonetheless, as a curiosity piece, it does have its uses, and those who really want to see W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty won't want to pass it by.

Re: HAVE YOU SEEN THIS??? W.C. AS Humpty Dumpty!!!!!
Sun, April 30, 2006 - 3:23 PMThe review you quoted is mostly right; it is a *very* curious film, straining for fidelity to the book but in the process losing a center of its own. The actors are generally lost under the Tenniell-inspired masks and makeup.
Still, it has some memorable moments: the emergence into Wonderland through the mirror, the Walrus and the Carpenter cartoon, the sung tribute "Welcome Queen Alice!" and surreal banquet scene that follows, and performances by Edna May Oliver as the Red Queen, Gary Cooper as the White Knight, and of course W.C. as Humpty Dumpty. He's allowed no movements whatsoever apart from his face, but even there he manages to create a character and demonstrate his condescension towards Alice, who is, after all, just another human child to him. -

Re: HAVE YOU SEEN THIS??? W.C. AS Humpty Dumpty!!!!!
Tue, May 2, 2006 - 2:10 PMYes, saw it when I was little. But they really do not show it on tv anymore which is a shame.Maybe they will on TCM? WC Fields hated that part by the way. -

Re: HAVE YOU SEEN THIS??? W.C. AS Humpty Dumpty!!!!!
Fri, May 5, 2006 - 12:28 AMYes, I saw this one as a kid back when the local indie station would occasionally run it bracketed with MISSISSIPPI (Grady: "How kin ye SWIM wifout th' use o' yer ARMS?" WC: "In those days, I had very powerful LEGS.. er, pardon ME, madam, LIMBS, heh-heh!") or IT'S A GIFT ("LaFong! Karl LaFong!"). I loved the book as a boy, but found the movie excruciating, which is usually the case with most adapted classic lit.
I dunno about vid/dvd. The last trace I saw if it was on the Fields documentary Dudley Moore narrated. The prop monster Paramount came with for Humpty is WEIRD looking! -
