For all our SCA friends out there, I'm happy to announce that the Known World Dance Symposium, a fabulous event that takes place every other year in places all over the "Known World" (it's been in various US locations, as well as the Australian continent!), will be held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada (Kingdom of Ealdormere) from July 2nd-5th, 2009. This event focuses on dance, and to a lesser extent music, from the Middle Ages, and is packed with fabulous classes on actual dances, theory, history, along with opportunities to dance all night long, and generally geek out with people who are passionate about dancing!
There will be a focus on both European and Middle Eastern styles of dance, with classes during the days and haflas at night. We are currently in the process of looking for teachers for dance and music tracks. If you're interested in teaching Middle Eastern dance, performing, helping out, playing music, teaching music or coming out and learning and partying with us, please contact me here on tribe or Lord Darius (info below) for more information! We'd love to see you in Ealdormere next July!
Please see the flyer below for more information & feel free to contact me with any questions or to get involved!

Re: SCA- Known World Dance Symposium 2009
Sat, October 4, 2008 - 12:41 PMHmmm...we may have to add this to our schedule...what kind of classes are you looking for? For example, Pennsic hosts dance classes, that may or may not have a historical component. Is this acceptable here as well, or are you lookinf for more historical offerings? -

Re: SCA- Known World Dance Symposium 2009
Wed, October 29, 2008 - 11:50 AMHi Amy!
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you... what a busy month it's been!
We'd love to have you guys for the Symposium, to teach, dance, learn, and party with us:)
This event is for lovers of the dance in its historical context, so classes should have be relevant to dancing in the SCA context. There will be a range of classes, some more scholarly than others. Classes that are pure technique are welcome, and I'm sure will be a large part of our offerings. That said, classes that connect how the dance being done can be like what we know of medieval dance would be absolutely ideal. The only things really not appropriate would be teaching styles that are obviously and only modern. If you wanted to teach how modern things evolved from old things, and talk about the connections between what-we-do-now and what-they-did-then, that would be great, too. I'd say the range of classes at Pennsic is probably a little broader than what you'll see at this event, but not really as deep. But this is just the beginning stage of the planning: it will be as great as we make it!
If you have ideas for things to teach, I'd love to know more, and we'd love to have you!
-Safiya
