Put on by Jeff Mach, this is his last non-Wicked Faire event for some time. Proceeds will be going to SPARC, Summer Program for Academic Reach and Creativity. It is a nonprofit summer program for gifted adolescents, founded by people closely involved with WickedEvents. It is On June 28th and tickets are $20 in advance, $30 at the door - you can't beat this price for the performers who will be there.

The premise: "The Totally Normal Event takes place in a universe much like our own, only one in which most fantasy, mythology, and science fiction is essentially true. The idea is that, under the guise of being some sort of convention for normal humans who dress up, we're actually those creatures of myth, disguised. Not disguised very well, mind you, but still.

Within the event itself is an enormous world of entertainments, performances, workshops, pleasures, panels, parties, and entertainments.

And we're working on a Secret Project to extend the event outside the confines of time and place..."

I’ve always thought of the troupe’s performances as Modern Folkloric or even Interpretive Folkloric for the stage. There is a joyful, fun, and wholesome quality that seems genuine in its presentation. There is a distinctive blending of ethnic movement that is true to the term “fusion”.

You ladies are a lot like a grandma’s secrete receipt. There’s a delicious blending of spices that you can’t completely identify. It taste like home and you can’t help but want another serving!
So how would you describe the talented style of Mahira?

After our very successful workshops last weekend, Mahira Tribe is starting to think about expanding what we do and offering more workshops in the future! But it wouldn't make sense to do this without getting some ideas on what YOU want! We know that between what the DDLC does, the Philly scene, Tempest in Cape May, and the Rakkasah festivals, there's a really large amount to choose from out there.

So, when you have a moment, would you ponder these questions for us? You can either post answers here in our tribe or PM me personally if you'd prefer your answers be kept private. We'd really appreciate it!

1. What attracts you most to a workshop? (reputation of instructor, workshop topics, location/travel distance, price, other reasons)

2. When offered a workshop by an instructor with whom you are not familiar, what would make you more likely to take the workshop? (workshop topics, location/travel distance, price, other reasons)

3. What types of workshop are you personally most interested in? (props, genre-specific styling, technique, historic/folkloric, non-bellydance styles, other)

4. Are there any instructors or topics you feel are lacking in the local area that you would like to see happen?

5. Are there any instructors or topics you would not want to be offered?

6. What do you feel is a fair price for a 2-3 hour workshop? What do you feel is a fair price for a day of 2 workshops of 2-3 hours each?

7. Please add any comments you think would assist us in our future planning.

We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

The first DVD goes from the first open dancing to almost the end of Frankie's solo. Frankie, you looked awesome, but I'm afraid that the DVD ran out of room before it finished. :( The second DVD starts up somewhere in the middle of Jenn's veil solo, when she's only dancing with one veil instead of two. I think there was one performer in between them who unfortunately didn't get taped at all. We haven't watched the whole thing yet, but it looks really great.

I wasn’t surprised that the Mahira Tribe’s Spring Hafla would be a fantastic event. Afterall, these ladies (and gentlemen from their live band) already knew how to make dancers and guests feel welcome in their space. They are always the perfect hostesses. They work together to insure all bases are covered and all details are thoughtfully executed. They are always gracious and grateful to everyone participating.

Mahira started things off with an elegant performance accompanied by live music. They are beautiful to watch because of their heartfelt interaction with each other. When Mahira performs, you get the sense you’re watching something genuine. They have fun on stage and invite you to join them. That kind of communication between dancers is inspiring. Mahira’s style mixes technique with a joyfulness that is supposed to accompany dance.

Every performer did a phenomenal job! Every performance built upon the outstanding one before it. There was a rich variety of styles, levels of experience, costuming, and music. The evening didn’t become a blur. You could remember something distinctively special about each dancer. It’s natural for two or three performers to standout at similar events. It’s spectacular when there is such an abundance of talent that the entire evening stands out.

I could hog the post with much more commentary about individual performances, but it would be moot. How do you compare a rose to a lily? A sunrise to a sunset? It’s all so beautiful and inspiring to behold.

If I must comment on one individual piece, it would be Carmine. We’re all going to say we knew him when as his star continues to shine and burn brightly. A musician’s musician, Carmine is incredibly gifted. He’s devilish and shy, hilarious and focused, carefree and caring. Carmine is the friend you laugh and cry with over a bottle of rum. When Carmine plays, it’s with infectious joy and passion. Surely his baby drumming workshop video will be another must buy when completed!

What I also noticed last night about Mahira is that they’re not just capable of hosting a cool event or delivering a solid performance. Mahira Tribe has a talent for creating a sense of community. That’s a much more powerful thing because the feeling last beyond one evening of great entertainment. Mahira Tribe knows how to create an environment that brings people together. They have a knack for putting the “Party” into “Haflas”!

Great Food, Great Entertainment, Organizations, Friendly Environment and a sincere Appreciation for the people there are the elements perfect hafla. Still, as evident from last night, Mahira brings “community” to their haflas. I felt a connection to the vendors, dancers, musicians, and the audience. I met new people and reconnected with old friends. Names and numbers were quickly exchanged. Because the host did their job, the spirit of friendship passed on to everyone there. That kind of magic comes from Mahira’s sincere desire to make the night special and memorable.

Like every great host, Mahira has said thank you to each of us for participating last night. In response, I say “No, THANK YOU! For all your hard work, dedication, and hospitality!” It was extraordinary to attend this “extended family reunion”.

Last night Amy and I went up to the Green Knoll Grill to perform, and it was a blast. Lots of talented dancers and such a great vibe. I can't wait till the next one.

Our members Kat and Trish were sorely missed. :( But nothing is more important in life than our children, and being the excellent mommies they are they couldn't make it for this one gig.

Amy and I did a the Basharat choreography with fans and received many complements on the use of the props. Yay Kat for teaching us fans! Jenn did an isis wings solo to a 1960's song and blended hippy, biker-chick, and bellydance. I could really telll that she was connected to the music. Good job Jenn! Our friend Steph did a stirring Egyptian flavored solo with zils. Man can that woman vibrate! Such spirit and such poise! Amy did a thrilling 9/8 Turkish Romani inspired solo, and it was down right sassy. She had the grace and poise that comes with such experience, and her glowing smile filled the room. When she finished the whole place erupted in applause. Bravo Amy!

I hadn't planned on doing a solo, but when we got there my name was already on the list. Amy and I looked at it confused and asked if there was another Suzanne. Michelle said (with a devious smile) that she put my name in the line up because I had done a solo the last time and she figured she'd leave a slot open for me. So I actually ended up improvising one to Djin's Nahavent Longa from their new CD that Kat and I have been choreographing as a duet, and believe it or not I did pretty good. (I guess it helped that I've been listening to it constantly) I think that out of two dozen acts, at least 6 of the songs were from Djin's new album. If you haven't bought it, you really should. It's on itunes now and it rocks.

Overall a wonderful night. If only I didn't have to get up for work this morning! hehe

A lot has happened with Mahira Tribe since our last few posts, and a lot more is planned for the near future.

First and foremost, we are pleased to welcome two new members: Kat and Trisha. Kat is also a member of Ak-Ana and has an ATS background. She's adept at dancing with fans, swords, and candles, and when she dances she has an intensity that steals your attention. Trisha is just starting her formal bellydance journey and is taking weekly lessons with Amy, our director, after years of videos. Trisha is also an opera singer and a frequenter of Pennsic, which explains how she already has the poise and grace of a performer and is so at ease in costume.

On Sunday Mahira Tribe had its first professional photo shoot. It went extremely well, and we plan to use the pictures on our new website, which is currently under construction. We'll also post the pictures on our tribe, on our profiles, and most likely on our refrigerators - because they're just that awesome.

Upcoming performances of Mahira Tribe include:
::Sigh::
I got an email this morning from Bethany Walters daughter, Brandy...
One of our dear dance sisters has passed.

To Bethany, all she wanted was to dance - It gave her inner strength and
meant everything to her! Sadly, she struggled long and hard with her health which unfortunately held her dancing back. It was an uphill battle that she was about to overcome.

She was looking forward to her first performances in May at the Smithville Belly Jam as well as at Hipnosis' Belly Jam. And she was one of the biggest supporters of the east coast bellydance commnity. Always coming to Shows, Haflas and always ready to give a hand for
Hipnosis (PA), Ak-Ana (PA), Chovexani (NYC) and Coveilance Dance Project (NJ).
She was a dear woman and will be greatly missed.

I am awaiting word on services.
In the meantime, you may contact Brandy Walters:

I promise. ;-) I just have to lighten them up in Photo Editor (they're really dark) which I only have on my work computer, and I've been so swamped with actual work this week that I haven't had the chance yet. Go figure. So hopefully by some time tomorrow they will be up.

Wow. I am amazed at how many awesome dancers will be performing at our Halfa! It's going to be such an amazing show! We added it up the other night and we have like 100 minutes of performances scheduled. (Which I'm afraid will have to be our limit, though we really hate to have to turn performers away). Not to mention the indellible Carmine who will undoubtably make the evening unforgettable with his mad oud and doumbek skillz. ;-)

Our Hafla is totally going to Rock! Weee!!!

Hey all-

Just some reminders:
time limits
soloists: 4-5 minuute
duets: 5-6 minutes
troupes (3 or more dancers): 8-9 minutes

Now obviousy, I won't shut anybody's music off if you happen to go overtime. But we have a pretty good number of dancers, so please be considerate! (I know everyone will be! )

Please message me with your song title and artist as soon as you can, and please bring the ,music with you on CD to the hafla! (It does not have to be the only song on the CD, but please label clearly). I'm not overly concerned with anyone not having the same song as someone else, but in case of a "double dose" we'll try to arrange the line-up appropraitely. I will also notify the peoples involved, so if someone *does* want to change their music...
Actually, now that I think about it, feel free to post your music choices here, so everyone has an idea, if you want.

Any questions?
