Press Release!

Underground Oasis: Morbid Cabaret Fusion Dance and Suspension Show at Barking Legs Theater Saturday, May 31, 2008.

( Chattanooga , TN ) May 20, 2008 – Vampires enthrall, zombies crawl, and dancers shimmy in the Merrybellies production Underground Oasis: Morbid Cabaret at Barking Legs Theater Saturday, May 31, 2008. The show begins at 7:00 pm, featuring local belly dancer Jillanna Babb-Cheshul’s fusion dance and performance art troupe, Graveyard Dollies, along with the dance and suspension troupe Chaotic Necrotica, for which she also dances and choreographs. The show includes special guest performers of dance and suspension arts from Chattanooga , Atlanta , Asheville , and New Orleans as well as live music by the metal/progressive/psychedelic band Hoth.

Underground Oasis: Morbid Cabaret fuses horror/sci-fi/fantasy with fusion belly dance and suspension arts. The art of suspension includes piercing the body with large hooks from which the performer suspends from a support. Prentice Suspensions from Atlanta joins Chaotic Necrotica in the suspension portion of the show, and will include hook pulls (where two or more people are connected by hooks and pull against one another) as well as full suspension. Shaun Emory, experienced piercing and suspension artist, heads the suspension end of Chaotic Necrotica and also suspends with Prentice Suspensions.

The Underground Oasis: Morbid Cabaret’s talented guest stars include professional dancers Mahsati Janan, belly dance instructor from Asheville, NC who recently produced her own instructional DVD; Amberetta (Chattanooga); Charm (New Orleans); The Flame Goddess (Atlanta); and Silver Bow (Chattanooga), The Graveyard Dollies fusion belly dance troupe includes thirteen dancers who study with Jillanna in Ringgold, GA. Their performances include dances choreographed by Jillanna as well as their own choreography and improvisation. Besides dancing, Graveyard Dollies and Chaotic Necrotica will present a Horror Pageant; Hallucinatory Lunatics Asylum; and Zombie Feast (among other delicacies and surprises).

Jillanna Babb-Cheshul directs the show, and intends to create an epic production. She spent three months creating and organizing the show, integrating the guests’ performances with the art of her own troupes, soloists, and duets. The show was meant to be experienced from start to finish as a single work of art. The strongest thematic element of the show is the relationship between predator and prey, and certainly memento mori, approached with thoughtfulness, humor, and a good dose of heavy metal and industrial music. Beware the fire sword (wielded by Mahsati Janan), the vampire lurking in the coffin (Terrence of Chaotic Necrotica), and the whip-snapping Graveyard Dollies. Watch for the fake blood, the fire fans and spinning fire poi, and Amberetta’s double sword dance. Avoid the zombie minions, but please don’t shoot them in the head. They have to go to work in the morning.

Cost: $10 at the door.
