Re: Getting to know you...
Sat, February 23, 2008 - 12:59 AMMy name is Gillian. I chose my current legal last name. Online and as a nickname I go by earthmothering. I'm generally not into having a 'magickal' name, but I've been toying with Gillian FairMount bat Eris. I'm an eclectic pagan of 20+ years, never been a wiccan or of any other specific pagan path. Fave deities: the GreenMan, Eris, and a goddess icon/image of my own creation I call Spiral Dancing Woman. I like to honor the four directions generally and often anthropomorphize them.
I think I will always love Beltane/May Day best as it was the first holiday I remember being a happy one. For many years, this was celebrated along with the Cambridge/Boston folk community at dawn by the Charles River at the Footbridge and processing to Harvard Square of a May Morning. Just this past year I finally came to a very useful, deep, profound and lovely ritual and understanding of Samhain so it is gaining favored status. Also, for Winter Solstice, my circle puts on a kick-ass show a la Christmas Revels only without the xmas. It rocks. I have a soft warm fuzzy place in my heart for Burning Man, though I have never been. I read all about it online - a LOT.
My ideal living situation is the one I've been trying to manifest for lo, these last 15 years. It is finally coming together and coming together fast! The part I envisioned was a pagan community of say 8-13 members living on land collectively owned and run, with many visitors during the nice months paying the bills by their event and camping fees. In fact, I now live in a town I adore, Bangor, Maine, in a multi-unit house that is occupied by my circle-mates, next door to my true love, and on our cul-de-sac are 4 more houses we intend to collect and fill with our own. This is close enough to the dream. It is everything I wanted in a community only without the shelling out of many thousands of dollars I don't have.
My favorite places are assorted lovely bits of Maine, New England, nooks and crannies of Boston/Cambridge and my sacred spaces include the dunes of Death Valley, Stokesay Castle in Wales, a couple of spots around Four Corners, one in Colorado and my own backyard.
For favorite words, I often consult The Meaning of Liff and wear one of theirs for a few months. I like 'headology' from Terry Pratchett and my own two: epoofany - that's when you just KNOW the meaning of life the universe and everything but then something distracting happens and you lose it. This word comes in more and more handy as I become more and more senile. My other word is not particularly nice but i still like it: hethole. It's a contraction of heterosexual and asshole. I think it's a more appropriate thing to mutter under your breath than say, cocksucker, which when you think about it can only be a compliment. And speaking of that, I rather like the word fellatrix. It was a career goal of mine way back when and I still think it has a nice ring to it as a word and as a career path or title.
Best book I've read recently: for fun, Scar by China Mieville and for serious, Sex, Ecology and Sprituality by Ken Wilber
I would be reading any one of my new pagan-centric texts if I weren't so busy organizing a SpiralScouts Circle in my locale.
If you didn't have to earn a living, what would you most want to do with your time?
Well, I'm not earning a living right now, I'm living off my inheritance and trying to create a multi-part-time career of online networking pagan community and street entertaining. I used to cook, bake and do secretarial work. I liked all of that but want to just manage my community now and run a pagan retreat which I'm currently creating here in the hood. We call it Corvid Grove.
Favorite movie: Tank Girl
First thing you think about when you wake up each day: feeding the crows, a dawn/sunrise ritual.
Worst feeling in the world: losing/being separated from my children
Best feeling in the world: knowing I've found my life-mate and planning annual handfastings with same.
Sexual orientation (het, bi, gay, lesbian, none of your @*$! business): although it is indeed none of your business I'm proudly bi.
Sleeping style (alone, with partner, naked, clothed, hanging upside down in a closet, etc.): naked next to my sweetie or pj'ed across the driveway from my sweetie in my own bed where I can see his kitchen window from my bedroom window - and I can see dawn and the first crows.
Hey baby, what's your sign? Libra, the Fickled Finger of Fate, Eye of Horus, Her many-pointed symbol of Chaos and His Noodly appendage...gggrrrowwwrrr
Of all the people in the world (living or passed, known well or known of), who do you respect/admire most? Ben Franklin, Alice Walker, Maya Angelou and a few of my ancestors, both living and dead
What one person/thing can you absolutely not live without? Sage, candles, a sewing kit and friends.
