To many ideas!

topic posted Wed, May 5, 2004 - 11:15 AM by  Brenda
Hi Everyone!

I have sooooo many business ideas that I make myself crazy. I am an idea person and not so much into the administrative aspects of running a successful business.

Many of the business ideas I have could make excellent small or home businesses for someone who is dedicated and able to focus. I cannot focus on one thing at a time, there for unsuccessful in starting any of the ideas I have.

How can I cash in on selling ideas? I mean they just keep coming!

There are two different questions here.

    1. How to find people that compliment you. Someone that is good with the details and can take a general idea/concept and refine it into a business that makes money consistently.

    2. The business/legal framework that allows you to benefit from the initial idea. Royalties, joint venture, franchise and any number of other structures are possible.

    Two general comments.

    A) As someone who also comes up with a lot of ideas I have come to the conclusion that sometimes the only way to get value is through good will. Sometimes an idea is not really worth a legal relationship. The idea is only the seed of something and the farmer is really the one doing the bulk of the work so deserves the bulk of the reward. Good will does come back to you.

    B) As someone will keep coming up with new ideas you can afford to give a lot away. Scatter the seeds and let people run with them. You will never have a shortage and some of ideas will really take off.

Thank you John! Your insights are very helpful. I especially like the idea of giving away ideas to those who can make it happen.

Any good "ideas" for my business?

Quitting is not one of them either. (<:

          Hi Tom,

For ADayattheBeach.com, I'd first look at re-designing the sight. When I first logged on I thought you were selling posters of bikini clad women. It looks (no offense intended) home made and that is not really what you want for your online store.

For examples of more pro-looking sites check out Marthastewart.com or Redenvelope.com They are clean mean selling maschines. Comb through sites such as these to get a better sense of how your site's look can better serve you.

Next, how are sales from your website so far? If not too great, look at some of the items you are selling. Many of which are readily available to people in their local stores. I wondered, "why in the hell do I want to buy Banana Boat Sun Block on the net?". People like unique things and/or bargains. Rather than a regular old sun ubrella, sell a variety of novelty umbrellas that are wacky, colorful, artistic, creative. Commission an artist to paint umbrellas, bikinis, hats a la Van Gogh.

People also like ideas. Produce a fun news letter for your customers with ideas of what people can do at the beach, which beaches are nicest, recipes of things to make to take to the beach, how to organize a beach party, etc. Provide some sort of stastic or trivia people ususally don't know in relation to the beach or ocean life. Something like, "Did you know you can be jailed for sun bathing nude at Doheney State Beach?". Then come back with a listing of nude beaches all over Southern Cali. because it would really suck to be in the slammer naked. (For more ideas on what to include in your news letter you'll have to pay me... hee hee hee).

          Now go get 'em!

Brenda, I'm exactly like you... ideas that people agree are brilliant... but right now I don't want a full-time business that I run... indeed I am much better at generating ideas than acting on them or following them through.

So let's figure out what we can do with our brilliant minds, hey?

          Tom,

How are you advertising for your site? Are you tracking all visits to your site to see where they are going? Those are some good ways to see how people react to your site and what they want the most. Are you referring these items from different sites (i.e. Amazon, are you housing/shipping the items yourself (which can be much more costly) or are you JIT shipping the items?

Good ideas are a dime a dozen, literally, pick up a book and you will get a million good ideas, hell, we even get good ideas when we wipe our butt.
What makes a good idea come to fruition is simply one thing, no- not money...that comes later, it is a person's relentless determination fostered by their dreams at night and day.

Andrew said it! It's not so much the idea as it is determination to make it come to life. One thing that helps me with mustering up confidence is reading teen entrepreneur success stories.
